Leave Your Stuff In Your Car?
SilverDoctor replied to wongrs's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I don't normally leave my stuff in my vehicle. I like to pack up for every trip as my needs are different for equipment depending on the area I fish. Large rivers, small streams or lakes. The one time I left my stuff in my van (on a business trip to Edmonton) it was broken into. Lost waders a couple of fly boxes and a precious bamboo fly rod. Be quite a while before I can scratch up enough shekels for a replacement, even a blank. My stuff was covered with an old blanket on the floor of my van. You're better off not leaving the stuff in. There is much less respect for people and property now. More care must be taken. Just pack up and go. -
My regiment is scotch pulls Oh hum's Another burger Quick nap and day dream gets me in shape quick.

Yes they do lock the gates at 10:00 and many time before. i would suggest getting a shuttle service to pick up your vehicle and drop it off somewhere.

Good tie, Just a suggestion, what you have to watch is the hackle around the hook. Look for hackle that is only as wide as the gap of the hook. Otherwise you get miss strikes when the large amount of hackle cloges the hook point. You can clip some of it away to free up the point.

Well it's been 48 years for me. Dame time flies when you're having fun. Started at 8 years old with my dad and a hand me down fly rod. We fished from French river in Ontario to the Miramichi River in NB. Tied a lot of flies standard and Atlantic's commercially and ran fly tying courses for boys clubs and boy scouts. Guided for a few years in BC and ran a fly fishing for life cancer clinic for women for a couple of years. Still learning, I figure I'm only about half way there. Hay Don, Is it you and me at the top of the chart?

I love old gear, I have a telescopic fly rod that is fiberglass sections. It's from the 1950's. I carry it in a small box when traveling. It's about 6' extended and compacts down to 12". Throws a nice dry and very handy for traveling.

You can make a great wasp trap. Take a 1 liter plastic pop bottle cut around the top where the curve stops. This makes a funnel. flip it upside down on the bottle. It's now a one way trap. leave some stale pop on the bottom and add about an inch of water. Wasps go in, can't get out and drown. I usually have about 3 or 4 on my deck. gets rid of em.

Last year when I went for summer Steelhead I met guys and gals fishing with outfits from 5 wt to 10 wt. I was impressed with some of the lighter outfits but I think a 6/7/8 would be a good choice. Leaning toward the heavier 8 wt's I had my first experience and tried out a with a 6 wt Meiser Highlander that a friend had that was a joy. Met a few ladies in Terrace and later on the river who where using 6 wts and fished all day with little effort. They both picked up a few steelies with Big shoulders and did well in the battle. Just remember that you are hooking up to a Steelhead definition = Rocket ship on wheels.

I don’t recommend products or services that I don’t strongly believe in. I would not hesitate to recommend Godon’s course. There are a number of reasons you may want to book for this great session. You have a Spey rod and want to learn the style. You have a fly rod want to learn the style. You want to experience a true Spey master at work, see classic top notch gear and have a great time. Are curious about this classic and beautiful way of casting. Think ol doc might be right. The first Bow river session sold out extremely quickly by not only locals but people out of the Calgary area. Seeing the interest expressed on the forum I would imagine this one WILL l be the same.

Welcome to the bow river Spey casting fraternity. Give me a shout some times and we'll do some swinging. Glad to see we now have a Spey area.

Crowding And Ethics On Our Rivers
SilverDoctor replied to Tracy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I was in a situation 2 weeks ago where I walked down and fished a small run (about 30 feet long) at at a well used fishing area at Fish Creek (not my usual haunt). Several fly fisherman and a spin guy where on both sides of me. I was lucky enough to quickly take a small rainbow, and then a brown that was a decent size. After releasing it and standing up I realized that I had fishermen on both sides of me inside of 10 feet. I simply stated that I would need more room to cast. The young guy at my right called me a F**g B***d who didn't own the river and was hogging the best spot where all the fish where (I guess because I had caught a couple). I was quite shocked as I had been on the run for no more than 10 minutes. I vacated the spot under a torrent of abuse, not wanting a confrontation surrounded by two young guys. I looked back on them and they where flailing the water with their fly rods. Using in my judgment the wrong presentation with shallow skills. Now I think I'm a fairly amiable person on the water who normally shares info and flies with those who are curious what a + 55 yr old fart has to say. But seldom do I encounter direct abuse. I enjoy sharing stream lore and trading pleasantries. I am a bit of a solitude fisher, but truly enjoy the company of those with like passion. I did hit the popular spots occasionally. I will comfort myself with my more private areas away from "popular norm". Like Toolman said a bit of walking will take you to more isolated areas. My wife says I should fish more with others for safety sake.
