Drinking On The Side Of The River?
kungfool replied to birchy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
If a bunch of responsible adults want to drink a few cold beer during the heatwave were having, be it at the river, thier back yard, or church, I say all the power to them!! -
Tough lesson learned buddy. I'm glad to hear your son is ok. Don't beat yourself up about this too badly. I'm sure your a great father and accidents happen to the best of us. I also want to thank you for making this post. By coming here and admitting to something that I'm sure most would be too embarrassed to do just to warn the rest of us shows a lot of character. I have been considering taking my older son who is 9 to the bow this year. Who knows, your post may have saved his life too since just reading yours shook me up.

I know a guy from Olds who has family living in BC and visits them yearly while he fishes for salmon. He told me that the banks get extremely packed when hes there with guys almost rubbing shoulders at some of the best runs. Now heres the funny, yet terrible part. He brings his nephews along which are now 6 and 9 and gets them to continuously throw large lures with treble hooks straight up, and downstream intentionally snagging as many anglers lines as possible. He said 20 minutes of this and he has the bank to himself.

The GRIFFON is a helicopter similar to the Huey helicopter if I am not mistaken.

Birchy you should be able to cast a light fly (like a dry) easier and farther than a nymph rig or a large streamer. I may be making an assumption here but If you started fly fishing with nymphs and streamers you are probably used to the weight of these heavier flies helping load your rod. Also the timing for heavier flies is different than with very light ones which also may take time to adjust to. Like others have said, make double sure you are using the right line weight and that you apply sufficient power forward after your line has straightening out behind you on your backward cast. Be careful not to apply too much power too fast on the forward cast. This will cause tailing loops which you don't want. The perfect forward cast starts out gradually but accelerates. Once all the line is moving forward, plenty of power can be applied. This post of yours seemed quite strange to me as I learned the opposite way casting only dries then moved to streamers and then nymphs. Maybe that's why I have the opposite problem. I have trouble making very short casts with a 6 weight. I can do it, I just have to make a few to start getting them right.

Stumbled across these awesome pictures of the bow river and other great Alberta and non-Alberta fishing destinations today. Is this gentleman a member of this forum? This guy has some serious photography skills in my humble opinion. Kevin Sproule's photo galleries

Just picked this Chevy Suburban and 28ft trailer up in Fort Mcmurray on Tuesday for my fishing excursions. Both are used but in amazing shape and I got a good deal on both. I just can't afford $100,000 for a new set atm .

Hey SJW... how about a PHP chat module for this site? It may be a great addition to an already great site.

Thats pretty funny. Saw it some time ago myself. He should have grabbed it by its horns and deer wrestled it!

Fly In The Back Of The Neck..
kungfool replied to birchy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
buried a size 6 streamer in my forearm earlier this year and smacked one off my pinky the day before yesterday. The one off my pinky hurt worse. Seem to get myself a couple of times a year just when I'm thinking "Gee this sidewind may start to cause me trouble"... whack!! Owwyyyy.... mommyyy!!!!! -
It feels this long although I have never actually timed one. I defenetly make them work to stay out there and have never, and I do mean never, have injured or killed a fish on the Bow.

What a terrible thing to have stolen . Very very sorry to hear it. Here's to hoping it makes a maraculous re-apperance!

Scuba gear... now thats how to find the fish! Lol

I think it depends on the fish and the situation. Strong currents like we have now add some time to the fight. Some fish also play out differently adding or reducing the time taken to land them. I have fought some that hardly run or jump but simply wont come withing 30 feet of shore for 15 minutes. Others go balistic for 2 or 3 minutes then come right in. I would say the average fish for me (16 -20 inch) with average flow rates (on the bow) takes me between 2 - 10 minutes depending on the run I get them in.

Me and Toolman were fishing together below Calgary last summer when some ***hat motors up on our side of the bank and has the nerve to wave as the wake smacks into my midsection. He proceeded to fish by drifting from upstream of us down the other bank (and other side of a small island across from us) then as he gets to the bottom of the run he fires up his outboard again and motored back up our side of the bank again to do it again, and again. It's really hard to keep your composure when some one does something like this. Motors through our drifts so not to spook the bank he plans on fishing...

Hey guys. Tied up my first damselfly today using a variety of olive colored materials I have including: marabou duck quills duck quill fuzzy bottom feathers a plastic army mans leg I would love some opinions on how to make this fly better or what other fly is simply better. Cheers!

Another sure way to repair rubber waders is to cut a piece of inner tube and user rubber cement to attach it over and/or under the tear. I did this once on an old pair and used them many more times with no issues. This works well on nylon waders as well.

Thanks for the links and tips drbulltrout and pacreseltoro. I will pick up some epoxy and try a one with sparser hair. Thx again.

I originally wanted to tie the clouser with a white thread since I don't like the idea of tying with mono. I never thought a darker color would look all that good until I saw the head you made above. My only concern there is contrast of the dark thread on the white bucktail behind the eyes. Maybe it wouldnt be that noticeable?? I'll give it a try. Oh, and SJW... I'm a long ways off before I can tie them like the one you tied above .
