  1. That won't be the case if the price of oil stays where it's at. And that'll be our undoing since the Harper regime has only done things to benefit the O&G industry. Even if you dislike him, Mulcair was absolutely right when he said that Canada has Dutch disease. If Layton was still around I'd vote NDP in a heartbeat. Right now I'm still undecided between Libs, NDP, and Green. CPC has never been an option for me.
  2. Feels like I can see small dries on the water a lot better than I used to. Not sure if it's really the lens or just my imagination. What you two do in the privacy of your bedroom is entirely your business.
  3. I like the Chief frames but they didn't come with the lenses I wanted - polarchromic ignitors in Chromapop - so I went with Dovers instead.
  4. I bought my Smiths at Iron Bow. If Mike doesn't have the ones you want in stock he can order them in for you too. Scratching has a lot to do with lens material though. Plastic lenses will always scratch easier than glass, with the tradeoff being that glass is heavier.
  5. All the Calgary fly shops probably have copies. I'm sure I saw a few at Fish Tales last time I was there.
  6. Would've liked to see them get more pitching instead of trading Reyes for Tulo, but oh well. Guess we'll see what happens.
  7. The whole fly fisher obsession with "made in the USA" has always given me a chuckle. I fish Sage rods because I like them, not because of where they're made. The overseas manufacturers are perfectly capable of making stuff better than North Americans, it's the companies who decide the levels of R&D, QA, and materials used. Your North American Tundra is still assembled with a lot of components that were made in China, Vietnam, Korea, etc.
  8. A friend and I just got back from an overnight float with Aaron from Fish Tales. It's a new thing he's trying out this year and we got to be the first ones to go out for it. Absolutely fantastic weekend with great company even though the fishing has been tough at times lately. Rigging up at Police. DSCF3684.jpg by Marc Fossi, on Flickr First fish of the day. 9. FACT: Steve has had a camera surgically grafted to his head just so he can get those pictures.
  10. Glad you got some flower pics in there. I was starting to get worried about you. Is that cattle drive on the 533? I've run into them there a few times on that hilly stretch just before the 22. Also ran into some Forces guys in their G Wagons on training exercises there too a couple months ago.
  11. That might be the end of them. Just look at the bad reviews they get on Google Play then compare it to some of the other offline maps like Backcountry Navigator, Gaia GPS, etc. People who actually travel back roads know the value of having a paper map in addition to any kind of electronic one.
  12. Yeah, I use Gaia GPS on my phone and tablet for offline electronic maps, but I like backup and redundancy so having a paper map as well makes me feel better.
  13. Yeah, I agree that there should be someone to call on for help in a situation like this. Since the Bow is a navigable waterway and this was outside the city limits would it be DFO maybe? It'd be good to know if this sort of thing happens again, like say that jet boat that was grounded a month back had been leaking fuel into the river, who would've been the best contact?
  14. Lives were not in immediate danger so I guess it doesn't rank as priority. It's outside the city so not in CFD's jurisdiction and the smaller MD departments probably don't have the manpower to spare. What would you do if your house was on fire and they didn't have anyone around to put it out because a bunch of firefighters were trying to pull a boat out of the river?
  15. Yup, you're going to need to consider the weight of the boat plus the current acting on it plus whatever it's stuck on. I've done a lot of stuck vehicle recoveries including complex winching involving pulleys and multiple winches. This is not going to be an easy one and doing it wrong might cause the boat to break up. The path of least resistance will be downstream provided you can easily get it dislodged from whatever it's stuck on. Make sure that all the equipment you're using has a good working load limit. The most dangerous part of recoveries is when the recovery gear breaks and things suddenly become projectiles. A snapped rope that had a lot of load on it can kill you just as easily as a flying piece of metal.
  16. Yeah, my buddy was there today too and texted me. I think if the new one is coming soon I'll probably just wait for that.
  17. You're going to need a shovel or wag bags to go along with the tp
  18. Yeah I saw that one too. There are a couple on Alibris going for $270USD as well. I know the fly shops I talked to said they haven't seen them in over a year, Chapters said they aren't available to order on their system, and the actual Backroads Mapbook site just lists it as out of stock. Not sure what the deal is since the Central Alberta and Kootenays ones I saw looked like they were fairly recent printings.
  19. So it seems that the Southern Alberta Backroads Mapbook has been out of stock for over a year now. A couple people have posted used ones for sale on Amazon asking $360+ for them. Anyone know of any (non-electronic) alternatives that are just as good, up to date, and reasonably priced ($20-$40)? (posted this in fishing-related since it gets you to the fishing )
  20. The thing that bothers me is that was posted four days ago and on a forum full of fly fishers someone has only just spotted it. I follow most of the local fly shops, Alberta Parks, SRD, etc. on Facebook and never saw this show up in my feed. If it took this long for people who are really passionate about fishing to find out then how is anyone else ever going to know? Thanks for posting this Lornce.
  21. I was really just grinding your gears. I do know that I've seen more than a few pairs of Korkers fall apart after a season of use in the past, but I don't know if they've gotten better since.
  22. Except the rest of the boot falls apart before the soles wear out
  23. Looks like a stock Wrangler. Probably someone who saw the Jeep ads where they drive it through rivers, bought one, and decided to test it without having a clue. I mean, look at this ad for the Grand Cherokee which is a mall crawler SUV and not even something people take off road:
  24. It is. It's the remains of an RCAF Dakota that crashed into Mt. Ptolemy in Jan. 1946 killing all 7 aboard. Local forestry service saw the smoke and climbed the mountain. They evacuated the bodies using sleds but the wreckage has been up there since.
