  1. The Oldman has been absolutely brutal flow wise this year especially downstream of the dam! I drive across the Red Deer, Bow, and Oldman every week or two and have noticed fluctuating flows across the board. The Bow downstream of Carseland has only looked reasonable on a couple drives all summer, the Oldman is finally looking acceptable as of last week (still more like mid July flows but I cant be too picky). The Red Deer was looking great for a few weeks there but seems to be fluctuating more than normal as well, though that's kind of been the norm since the last big flood. I only see it getting worse after this years flooding, I think twitchy dam release fingers are here to stay and tail water fisheries will pay. Fingers crossed the resiliency of trout can buffer further negative consequences. Hope the fish get some consideration in future dam control plans but I'm not that optimistic. On the bright side, at least the sturgeon seem to be happy down on the Oldman, they seem to be showing up thicker and thicker after each high water event.

Well with those sturgeon you live through a couple of geological ERA's and you are bound to have some resiliency.

  2. Haha I wish I would have posted this before I went all summer sockless. You are correct I am no longer welcome in carpools and it is gross.

Now I just hope I can remove the evil spirit that has inhabited the bottom end of my waders.

Thanks for the tip on the talc/baby powder. Time to go and purchase some new socks as I have a big weekend on the Elk ahead of me.

  3. Hello everyone just thought I would ask what everyone wears inside waders with a neoprene sock foot?

I have been going without socks for most of the summer if it is warm and I think I may have discovered a flaw with this.

The problem I just found with this is that when I took my feet out they smelt somewhere between the dumpster outside a red lobster on a hot summer day and a bag of unopened hockey gear.

I figure any sweat from a sunny day just sits in there as the material is of course waterproof. I am aware that the possibility is that my feet are just really gross or something and maybe it is just me. If not though I am curious of other peoples experiences.

Last night to clean them I pulled them inside out and let them soak in some dishsoap and rinsed them off. I am either going to wear socks all the time going forward or put some baby powder or maybe just turn them inside out to dry.

With all that being said here are my questions/requests personal experiences.

    1. Do people always wear socks or go bare foot? Do they add something like talc or baby powder?

    2. If they don't wear socks do you clean the insides of the neoprene portion?

    3. If so, how?

Thanks for any experiences people are willing to share.

  4. Agreed with what DRock said.

Lots of good spots south of Fish Creek. Also the room to back cast will make for less frustrating days to start.

Nice not having to drive very far to get on some quality water.

Welcome to Calgary by the way, I was just in Australia in January for a month. Pretty nice country you have over there too.

  5. Plumega from Calgary depending on which part you have two options currently.

Highway #2 south to Nanton, west on Highway #533, south on Highway #22. Then go west on the Maycroft road. It is right after the bridge and there is a big red building right there. This will take you to Highway #40 (Trunk road). I would recommend going north from there and exploring.

Or if you live in the west part of Calgary just get on highway 22 south and see above.

I would say roughly 2 hours to the trunk road.
