  1. I rear-ended a car this morning.

I tell you, I knew right then and there that it was going to be a

    REALLY bad day!

The driver got out of the other car, and wouldn't you know it!

    He was a DWARF!!

He looked up at me and said "I am NOT Happy!"

So I said, "Well, then, which one ARE you?"

And that's how the fight started.

  2. Forgot about that one! That's "The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying" by Leeson and Schollmeyer, excellent book and a little cheaper than The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference by Leeson and Schollmeyer. The Benchside Introduction is geared to beginners and OFers thinking about gettin' back into tying  The Benchside Reference is more of a expanded book on techniques for all levels of tyers. Both are well worth the money.

Cool. You can buy both of them together on Amazon.com for $93.

  3. What do you find to be the most productive SJW. Chenille, Floss, Wire, Cobra Cord, a combo of those?

I've had my best success with wire wrap and chenille both.. but always with a bead head. I don't think I've ever caught a trout on a non bead head SJW.

  4. Great! Looks like an awesome magazine.

Someone should tell the webmaster to play down the "Best viewed" and the "Update your browser" bit on the splash screen. They are goona have a high bounce rate on that splash page due to people thinking they have to update/change browser settings to view the site.

A splash screen is counter productive to begin with and if you don't have text or a button saying "Click to enter" or something of that sort on it you start to lose visitors quickly. Having browser update info and screen resolution requirements makes them leave even faster.

I have a decent background in internet marketing and believe me that this advice is something they should consider.

    No doubt!

And being an IT guy myself... it's been a LOOOONNG time since I've seen a computer that didn't have IE 6 or higher!

  5. Geez rick.. even your "short and sweet" stories are a riot!!

I fell in the river the other day too! The Livingstone. Fortunately I fell in sideways and it was my side that I don't carry the camera in!

I'm getting more and more ammo every time to break our budget and convince my wife to let me splurge on wading boots that we can't really afford right now! :P

  6. I like that one!

    True story:

A buddy of mine was fishing in Texas (same guy who came up with the vermiculite/condom practical joke). While wading, he sees a Pelican swimming towards him. It gets right up to him and stops. He notices the wing looks weird, so he looks closer and sees mono wrapped around the wing. The Pelican allows him to take the line off the wing then flies away, circles over his head and shits right on him! OK, so the *hit part isn't true, but it sure would have been funny!

Anyway, he said he sure wished he had brought his camera that day as it was an incredible experience. He couldn't believe how the Pelican let himself be handled.

    No Sh*t!! :P

  7. I don't usually like these fuzzy heartwarming stories, but this one is truly interesting..

In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Mbembe approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Mbembe worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Mbembe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Mbembe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Mbembe was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Mbembe and his son, Tapu were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Mbembe, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Mbembe couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Mbembe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Mbembe' s legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

    Probably wasn't the same elephant.

  8. I would think the Canadian Tire in Okotoks should have what basics you need.

Not sure that I'll ever buy fly fishing gear from Can Tire. This is why..

A few months back my coworker goes in to Can Tire to get some flies.. he asks that sporting goods worker if they carry San Juan Worms. The clerk was like "San Juam Worm? What's that? I've never heard of a San Juan Worm."

  9. A good nymphing line will have a different taper than a dry line for delicate presentations. I really like the SA Mastery series Nymph Line, as the head has only a slight front taper with a large diameter tip that provides better floatation. This line also has a large diameter through the belly which rides high even in the chop and allows easy mending.

For a good dry line, a Double tapered line gives you a nice long taper with a fine tip which can present those tiny Tricos, BWO's, on a 5x-6x tapered leader, nice and cleanly.

Do the shops around here carry this Toolman? Just looked on SA's website and it looks really neat.
