  1. Ricinus, Not fearmongering. I would wear high viz if I was biking or walking on a road way as I think it is a high risk of getting hit by a car. no hard feelings at all. Appreciate honest debate
  2. And some people feel necessary to post on every thread, FNG. I find this comical all the vast knowledge from people who don't hunt, but can google. The interweb must true. Reading through all these posts about blaze orange, does support my initial comments that there appears to be this propagating perception that hunting or being in the woods is a high risk activity. What are we at now...7 times more likely to get shot if not wearing orange? Do I hear 10?
  3. That may increase your chances of getting shot in some areas of Alberta and BC.
  4. i think I will take my chances. Orange makes my butt look fat.
  5. On my last point I must have accidentally hit that smiley face with the sunglasses. It was not intended. fat fingers.
  6. Ricinus (Mike), I first suggest to re-read my second post. My reasoning is pretty straightforward. But here's some elaboration: a) MY impression is your intended message is one should wear orange to prevent getting shot during hunting season. Is this not your thought? If so, my opinion is that this is fear mongering and I go on to explain that someone reading this could think that it's world war 3 out there. c) I didn't say anything about this was anti-hunting. Read my post again. I said this was putting unfound fear in people - IE Fear mongering d) I DID say that I will stand up for hunters against misguided information. As a hunter, this is important because there are too many groups that are fighting to take away hunting. Same as everyone here who fights to protect their fishing resource (as I do as well). Your life jacket analogy is completely off on what I am trying to convey. but hey if you want to wear orange go ahead doesn't bother me. Maybe a blaze orange life jacket since you will be near the water (that's a joke to lighten the tone here, not trying to be evil). Just thought I would share my knowledge of this subject as an experienced hunter in Alberta.
  7. Not really, but I will. Perhaps I misunderstood your comments, but my impression is that since it's hunting season wearing orange will help prevent you from getting shot by a hunter. This suggests that this is a common occurrence? When was the last time a flyfisherman or hiker in Alberta was shot by a hunter? I know, I know, if it prevents it from happening once its a good thing, but you have a better probability of falling while walking to the stream, so maybe you should wear a helmet? So is it really best to wear orange? If someone reads this thread could they possibly think, 'Geez it's not that safe to be anywhere near woods in Alberta from Sept-Jan'. Could this not be construed as a bit much? Unfortunately, there are some very poor representatives in the hunting community and I will be the first to admit it. But I will stand up and defend hunters from a society that tirelessly tries to characterize them as unethical, blood thirsty creatures that drive down the road drinking beer and shooting everything that moves. Oh and it is well documented that wearing orange has no correlation to lowering the rate of hunting related shootings. So back to my original comment. Is yes, I think you are inciting an unecessary worry about safety in the woods.
  8. The internet has seemed to exponentially promote fear mongering.
  9. The morality of hunting black bears and the fact that they shot this bear is irrelevant except for the fact that they were carrying firearms. Could have easily been a flyfisherman carrying a gun for protection or a hiker or rancher checking his cattle. You can only make judgment on confirmed facts. The only one I saw in the article is that F&W confirmed there was a fresh kill. Informed people know there is a huge difference between a bunch of MEC garment clad people skipping through the woods running across a bear travelling down the same path and a bear that is trying to protect a kill (the MEC comment made for dramatic effect only). I've been involved with both first hand and I've read my share from Herraro, Geist etc. These kids weren't hunting grizzly like some here may suggest. That's a stupid statement. If they were, they would not shoot it in the head, they would not report it...etc. I take what's written in the Sun with a grain of salt. Grizzly bears are not endangered. In fact, we don't even have a clue how many bears are in Alberta. The study completed a few years ago is riddle with questionable methods and material and is a whole discussion on its own. I'm not a bear hunter, but hunting black bears in Alberta is legal, so if you have a problem with it, take it up with your MLA. I'm sorry that this bear died, but I too would have done the same thing. It's easy, really easy to pass judgment sitting in front of computer screen. Like I said before, I have been in similar situations, luckily with better outcomes. But you can't describe the feeling to someone who has never encountered this. Oh and I do boycott MEC.
  10. At least Bertuzzi didn't break someone's neck last night with a sucker punch. I believe it was Steve Moore bobble head night in Colorado last night. Todd couldn't concentrate.

    Goal Met

Well done. I've caught a few way up north just after ice off on the fly. To hijack your thread, looks like you took my dog fishing. I use the same collars.
  12. Great idea. I know sometimes I get stuck on trying to create "new and improved" when some of the classics are killer patterns that have been proven to work.
  13. I'll give this another shot. I tried incorporating a bounce drier sheet and my dog's underhair into an adams, but it didn't turn out as good as I wanted.
  14. I'm not as worried about PETA as some of the other organizations out there. Groups like Y2Y (Yellowstone to Yukon Initiative) scare the pants off of me. While the groups look fine on the surface, their goals are somewhat different. Rick is right. These groups market themselves very well. Better than fish and hunting organizations. I am a fisherman and a hunter. Dr.Valerius Geist is a well known hunter and wild life biologist who sums up why people hunt in a very accurate summation. I won't parapharse as it wouldn't do justice for the well worded explanation. We are losing hunters more because the shift in population density than anything else. From my experience, acknowledging oneself as a hunter can be a dangerous event, much more than being a fisherman. I find it very ignorant for someone who had never hunted to give me grief for hunting. What do I do about it? I commit most of my time and money to my outdoor activities. I am involved in 4 different organizations that promote the conservation and education intiatives. I also make it a point to expose people to these activities on a regular basis.
  15. I'm with Trailhead. Leroy is going to be at the fly show. Seems to be a pretty laid back guy.
  16. Was wondering about performance compared to herl. Specifically, how well it floats after being dunked a few times, durability and just basic performance under water. Personally, I think herl still looks better when fishing under surface. I also find durability of the herl to be good if you wrap it around your thread. Just was looking for feedback.
  17. Pacres, how much does a replacement liver cost? Just in case I need to upgrade.
  18. I had 2 cavities in the span of 6 years.
  19. Anyone try using ice dub for dry flies. Was thinking of trying some peacock caddis with ice dub instead of herl.
