  1. Congrats on your opening. What is the address, next time I am in town I will try and stop in! Cheers,
  2. head thru Okotoks, turn west and go to black diamond and take 22 south. Then once you cross the Oldman river going south, immediately after the bridge is the maycroft road, take it going west and it will shoot you right into the "gap" area. You could go all the way to the forestry trunk road (the next T intersection) and turn right (north) and you'll cross the racehorse right there, then you can hit the oldman, dutch, livingstone, and any number of small tribs. In my opinion none of it is fishing exceptionally well; however, I have been spoiled in years past and come to expect a 40 fish day out here and that is a rare occurance any more these days. Random camping, quads, and overfishing is having its effect.
  3. You know, I was trying to remember where I had heard a similar story before. I think it was Dutchie or someone he knows, and it was nearly the same ordeal... guides calling in some bogus BS... but that time it was about guiding others instead of fishing or something of the nature. I sure can't wait until BC residents have to pay to fish our streams, and BC guides have to get the hell off our water completely.
  4. I'd like to know the shop's name. PM is fine. I'll be out there fishing with friends within the next month (maybe). I also agree that you should contact the RCMP and press CRIMINAL charges against the guide who called in. 87.1 Public slander and false accusation Public slander and false accusation is the spreading of deliberately falsified information that denigrates the honour and dignity of another man or woman or undermines their reputation. 5. There is a location down from the highwood confluence that was used for some little house on the prairie TV series episodes as well
  6. As suggested lay low, stay away from tall objects (including trees) and barbed wire type fences... electricity can travel a great distance through barbed wire... and hands and arms over your head especially in hail situations. Been through some really nasty ones myself, best to put the rods down, find a safe place, wait it out and if possible enjoy the show.
  7. most of the lakes fish well with small nymphs (copper johns, bead head prince, bead head hare's ear, black leeches, small green leeches, chironomids) fished at varying depths under an indicator. I usually start with about 5ft and 6ft, with two different nymphs and move around a bit trying to locate fish. If I see surface activity I shorten up my depth to 3 and 4 ft, if no surface activity anywhere sometimes the bigger ones can be 9 to 14 ft deep (or more). by the way this is Brian, I was going to reply to your e-mail but saw the post here, figured if someone else reads it at least they have also gained some insight cheers
  8. I've actually had some fish bleed pretty bad so I keep them in the net to make sure they are OK, usually takes about 2 minutes and the bleeding will stop... then the fish rests up, gets it's colors back fully (you can actually watch the fish turn from tired and pale, to vibrant colors, right before your eyes) and heads on out under it's own power, and I assume they are fine
  9. Keep in mind the south did not get it as bad as the Highwood/Sheep/Bow drainage, but we are recovering pretty good. The major floods in my own opinion actually help the rivers & fish. They need a good cleaning every once in a while. Let's hope this helps the poor browns get over that disease. I've seen 3 major flood events in my lifetime of fishing and after each one the fishing got significantly better than it was before the floods, in the two to five year period after. Let's see what happens! I think the future is bright myself!
  10. No one out there is listening to the 100ft from a river rule. Anywhere they can be 20ft or less from one they are. With their quads and dirtbikes. Any farther and it's waaaay to far to go to get a good wash in, ya know!!??
  11. I could go on a huge rant but suffice to say random camping has ruined the reasons I used to go fish the Livingstone / Oldman / Castle rivers. I hardly ever go anymore and do not even desire to go, until at least September / October when all the rednecks have gone home.
  12. Y'all ain't near redneck enuff! I just fill an empty Pilsner can with water, tie my line to it and let 'er sink.
  13. Used to be from Calgary so I have to bug anything Edmonton. It's in the blood...I kinda miss living in the big city, but when I explore some areas down here have not seen a boot in years, I do not miss it
  14. Going to Edmonton is never an alternative for someone from Calgary ;-)
  15. I just hope the changes do not leave us with a characterless, flattened out, straight as an arrow river in most parts.
  16. that is mind boggling. I also cringe at seeing folks standing so close to the drop off to what looks to be very unstable banks and a still very fast moving river.
  17. I agree to an extent. At least not open to hazardous material... for sure.
  18. They are saying they think they have the train cars stabilized and they should NOT fall into the river. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/story/2013/06/27/calgary-flood-train-derailment-bonnybrook-bridge.html
  19. I hear the skeeters in Calgary have learned to avoid deet nowadays? I remember how bad they were after the 2005 floods I can't begin to imagine how bad it must be right now.
