  1. I've been curious about trying to spread the shot around my nymphing rigs for when it doesn't make sense to put all the weight in the nymphs. I've heard guys mention it on FF shows. I would think that it would both cast more easily and drift more naturally. I have no problem casting a standard rig with 2 shots (both above the top fly) but have found the need lately to add a third shot for certain situations (this doesn't cast very well at all). I'll definitely give this a try. Does anyone know of any variations?
  2. Great advice from everyone. I'll second that you probably won't be saving money for a while; however, you think you will be though. I let myself believe it . My thinking is like this, I personally would rather drop 40 bucks on materials which will tie many flies over a long period of time than 20 dollars on a dozen nymphs which will be gone before I know it. Investing money in fly tying is more of a long term investment; investing your time in tying is an all around investment. One way all Bow river non-tyers can get into tying and save a few bucks if they care to is to tie their own wire SJWs, you can do it without a vice. Also, some really good vices that won't break the bank are those made by Anvil; Anvil also makes tying scissors which look nice. I have their Atlas vice and am very happy with it. A few shops in town carry their stuff. http://www.flyfishohio.com/Vise%20Review%201/Anvil_Atlas.htm
  3. I live in the NW as well and am looking forward to fishing it lots when it opens. I can't say I've never fished it in runoff but have gotten some nice fish up here otherwise. There are definitely lots of big whities. Some of us should get together some night.
  4. The last few times I've been down there the garbage cans are overflowing to the point that garbage is blowing around the parking lot. Is it the city that looks after this? Therefore, is it just a matter of calling 311 to let them know?
  5. Thanks for all the advice. I went with the ZXL and am very happy with it. Tried it out today for the first time. I'm not really sure how to describe it other than slowish but still powerful. Just to see if I could, I nymphed with it for a bit this afternoon with 2 large nymphs and a small indy; it worked very well. Out to 30 feet or so I could easily roll cast to position the indy upstream and mend line. Also tried some dries this evening with a 12' leader and it was awesome, lots of power but delicate. Even with a slight breeze it had the power to do what I wanted. I bet I could fish very light tippet with it. I can't wait to hook into something with it. Thanks again, C. Had a slow but fun day fishing south of the city and then this evening in FCP. Fished for 6 hours total and got one 12" rainbow (#14 evil weevil), and one LDR on either a hydro or SJW.
  6. Definitely love the fast rods. I got the 690ZA and a 490XP. The XP in a 4 is killer. I hear the whole line of XPs are killer. I'm still thinking of a slower 3 though, especially since the rod is largely for back home NS. Brookies back home are small - a one pound trout is considered big. I'll have to find a ZXL to try before buying. I bet that 7 wt XP is an amazing rod.
  7. Hi all, I'm looking at both of these rods and was wondering if anyone on the board had either or could provide any info. At this point I'm leaning toward the ZXL, the Z, which I've tried, seems a little fast for what I'm wanting this for, mainly still water dry fly fishing and smaller streams out east. Any info would be greatly appreciated. C
  8. Two dead rainbows floated by me today. I tried to grab em to see what might have happened but couldn't without going for a swim. I'm hoping it was just an unfortunate coincidence.
  9. I can't say I know I ton of his stuff, but the stuff I do know I love it. Been meaning to get the new Steve Earl tribute album to Townes.
  10. No question about it; I completely agree. I couldn't call the guy in in this case, the whole incident happened in the parking lot. What I was getting at was that there is no question that people some people don't know the regs. For example, Canadian Tire doesn't give out reg books with new licenses. Perhaps if there were signs at common fishing spots and public parks that stated the rules and consequences of breaking them, guys like those were talking about in this thread couldn't play dumb and wouldn't have any recourse at all if caught.
  11. I wonder how many of these dudes just aren't aware that there are rules. The reason I say this is because I've had a few guys come up to me on the river and ask me what a particular fish they caught was while pulling a monster out of a garbage bag with a hook with cheese in it's mouth. The guy obviously didn't know I could make a call and have him fined. I tried my best to explain to him the rules but he was not Canadian. This kinda thing happened to me twice.
  12. I recall learning in a boating course that lighting can travel up to 17km. Kinda scary. Pic of a fly rod that's been hit: http://mountainriverjournal.wordpress.com/...ning-meets-rod/
  13. Regarding Sage, does anyone know what their turn around time is. I have one of their 2500 series reels and something seems to be wrong with the bearing, the spool wiggles on the reel and feels like it's going to wear out and fall off sometime soon. I'm wondering if they would even charge me the 40 dollar surcharge because it's a manufacturing problem and not related to misuse.
  14. Regarding this, I'm curious as to what everyone likes, and why, when nymphing. I've been using about a foot of 3 or 4X fluro, usually 3 on the Bow, tied to a standard 9' 3x leader. I sometimes chop a foot or two off this as I find it helps the roll casting. Does anyone here use anything substantially heavier?
  15. I figured out something that works. Right click on the pic and choose open in a new window then copy the url minus the few digits at the end after the picture extension. Example: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3267/321742...f394f82.jpg?v=0 remove the ?v=0 and paste everything before it into the insert picture popup thing.
  16. It's on either a partridge #12 or czech nymph hook or #14 shrimp hook. The pattern is in the latest issue of a magazine called Fly Tyer. PM me with an email and I'll pass along the recipe.
  17. Wondering if anyone here uses flickr and has gotten the links to work to post pictures on flyfishcalgary.com. I can't seem to figure it out.
  18. I've tried the Trion, fantastic reel for the money. Was curious where in town you picked yours up?
  19. Where in town can I buy sinktip by the foot? It's gotta be cheaper than the tapered sinking leaders I see around.
  20. I went to music school with a guy who claimed he had prince albert, said he loved the thing. It's popular with gay guys.
  21. So your still fishing with a 9' leader? I think I've had the same problem. I think it's all going to click for me this season .
