I'm curious as what weight switches are most common the Bow? I've been looking into a 5 weight that is designed for fish up to 4 lbs, which sounds about right to me. I was also wondering if a standard 8 weight reel designed for a single hand casting line would be a good match, or, should I be looking into something bigger? Thanks.

Max, is that rod a switch? I'm wondering how a 5 weight switch such as the 5110 z-axis would fair on the Bow for heavy nymphing and weighted streamers? It's the lightest in the series but 6,7 and 8 all seem to designed for steelhead and salmon fishing. I'm thinking of getting into a switch come spring.

What I really like about the 2500 series reels on z-axis rods is how well they balance. I had one of the cheaper Sage reels prior to my 2560 and there is no comparison.

This is something that I've stumbled upon as working for me when trying to really get it out there. However, I've also read that it is much more efficient to false cast a few times with just the head of the line off the rod, then build up some line speed through a few false casts and shoot when casting. Any thoughts?

Awesome summary! I'm no expert but may I add that it might also help to mark your line where the taper ends, i.e. where the head meets the shooting line. Myself, for any kind of traditional style of casting, I've found that I get optimal loading when I begin a cast with just the head off the rod and like J said, have no slack in the line that is on the water.

Just curious as to what extremes a CO in Alberta can go to? I've heard of stories back home in Nova Scotia where guys who were netting running fish for lobster bait have had their vehicles seized.

Has anyone been out yet, the N.W. that is? Is it even worth trying during runoff? C.

I'm new to town and also a newbie fly fisher and was just wondering if fishing the Bow in the NW (say around Edworthy Park or in Bowness) was allowed and second if it was worthwhile? I've never seen anyone fishing this area of the river. Thanks in advance.

Great thread! I went with a 6 instead of a 5 for my first rod and it's been working out well for me. However, with the little guys it sometimes feels like there's nothing on. I'd like to pick up a 4 at some point. Do most guys here go a little shorter than the standard 9' for their dry fly rod for reasons other than fishing tight spaces? Thanks. C.
