  1. As a BC resident, it costs me half as much for my licence in Alberta than even my basic resident licence in BC (with no steelhead/classified waters/salmon tags or anything). I would be totally supportive if Alberta hiked license costs (even if it was only for BC residents :) ) for out of province anglers, provided all of the money went back into the resource (extra CO's, habitat improvements etc...).
  2. I voted yes, but would have been happier if there had been a "yes, but..." option. When the fish are on their spawning run, no problems there. But some areas may have obstructions where fish stack up waiting to pass or which completely block the river to fish passage (ie dams), and these areas should be closed at this time. Targetting fish when they are on their redds is a definite no no in my books. Might also want to leave a buffer zone below known spawning areas. I also think that rivers/lakes which are open at this time should be closed to retention for spawning species.
  3. Paid to fish???? You can get paid to fish???? How could I have missed that career opportunity???
  4. Why would you want to fish the Alberta/Manitoba border????
  5. Little Creeks. The ones where you have to sneak up on the fish.
  6. All gear requires care and maintenance. I probably use my most expensive gear the most, and I'm not particularly gentle with it. But I do take care of it. My Islander IR-3 has seen almost 400 days of use and abuse and has never caused me problems. One time I did get some sand in the works, but 5 minutes with a toothbrush and some grease and all the grit was cleaned out. Using your gear hard is not a problem, as long as you clean and take care of it on a regular basis it will continue to give you great service.
  7. Man, I don't miss exam time. I had one Prof that taught Rock Mechanics who (in retrospect) set the most challenging exams. In the last class we asked him the usual questions. What's going to be covered in the final exam? Answer - Everything from day 1 in the course. Will it be open book? Answer - Yes, bring whatever books you want and whatever notes you want. Also the Engineering library will be available to you for whatever you think you might need. None of it will help you. Just don't ask any grad students to help you - they won't. How long will the exam be? Answer - It all depends how much attention you were paying in class. You should be able to finish it in 30 minutes, but I'll give everyone 4 hours. We go into the exam expecting something heavy on the theory, instead he gave us a bunch of rock core logs and rock testing results, geological mapping and a plan view showing the location of the boreholes and the location of a proposed tunnel. The question - Design the support for the tunnel. In one small question, we had to cover just about everything he taught in the course from day one. That was the single most challenging exam I've ever written. And yeah, I spend all four hours trying to figure things out. I don't think I put pen to paper for the first hour. Ended up with a B.
  8. I was out chasing coastal cutts yeareday with a fried who had just picked up a shark skin line for his 5-wt. The line is certainly noisy as it passes through the guides, but is does seem to cast well. I was getting an extra five feet or so compared to my GPX line, but the rods were different too so that also may be a factor. Aside from the noise, there was only one other negative with the line, my buddy wore a significant groove in his finger from stripping flies all day. He didn't notice until his bright yellowy green line started to turn red. It might not be a factor if you're dry fly fishing, but if it's that much more abrasive on your fingers, what is it doing to the guides? I'll stick to my GPX lines until more info is available on the effects on the guides.
  9. Has anyone ever given any thought as to why Tim Hortons has long line ups????? Timmies is about the only place on this continent where you can get something resembling a good cup of coffee. Starbucks sucks (except for their lattes), it's way too bitter and other coffee chains are no better. What do Canadians (and North Americans as a whole) have with bitter coffee? I just got back from France - nice mellow, good tasting coffee...now say what you will about the French, but they sure know how to make a good coffee. Same with the Germans, Italians and Turks. North America has only ever had crap for coffee, so we (as a whole) don't know any better.
  10. Sage 590-4 Z-axis matched up with an Islander IR-3LA - a perfect combo. Not enough change for a line to go with it though.
  11. If you'd asked for best player, it would have been Gretzky, hands down. But for favourite player, Linden gets my vote. He's all heart, and when the games on the line you don't have to wonder if he's going to show up. He's not the best player Vancouver's ever had, but he is the greatest. I'm prepared to overlook the fact that he's a Medicine Hat boy!!! Messier is a bum for two reasons. Had Linden run out of town and then did nothing for the 3 years he was a Canuck.
  12. http://www.ccnr.org/CANDU_Safety.html About a 1/4 of the way down the article. A 1:1,000,000 annual probability of failure is the standard.
  13. Lets see then. If all of the worlds 443 nuclear reactors were allowed to run with a 1:1000 annual probability of failure, that could mean about one Chernobyl or Three Mile Island every two years. The politicians should be fired, not the bureaucrat. Fu@*ing Idiots!!!!!
  14. Islander, hands down!!!!! Hardy come a distant second (too loud, but great reels).
  15. FYI the CPR has always been a private company. You are thinking about CN, which is a completely different company and unrelated to CP (except that they both operate railroads). The majority of the derailments over the past couple of years have been CN's.
  16. Small packages sent to me usually took about a week (10 years ago). Postcards take 4 - 5 days. Sorry, can't be more help.
  17. Reaction Fly and Tackle is right at the freeway (we only have one) by the Whatcom Road exit in Abbotsford. Best store in the Valley. Coho will be running real soon in the Vedder/Chilliwack (there are some already), but that river is a gong show. The Skagit is open until October 31 - bring big flies for the Bulls, and BWO's down to #24 for the rainbows. An October Caddis is often worthwhile as well. The Harrison should be decent for Coho and Chum, but you pretty well need a boat. Cutthroat will be mixed in there too. Bulls are running on the Squamish. There are Summer Run Steelhead in the Coquihalla, but its only open until Oct 15. Plus there are lots of little creeks to explore if you want to take the time.
  18. I'm originally from the Glasgow area (Bothwell). If there is a good bottle of Scotch involved, I'd be more than willing to translate. :)
  19. What is it with kids today, always in a hurry. Congratulations. Reminds me of my daughter, full term but only 30 minutes of labour. They catch you unprepared at an early age. It's their way of preparing you for what's to come.
  20. BC Info can be seen here http://bcwildfire.ca/hprScripts/WildfireNews/Bans.asp
  21. Lying about the fish you caught is considered acceptable and is even expected.
  22. Sorry to burst your bubble here guys, but those pro's were not from BC. It may explain why they didn't catch anything. http://fishbcforum.com/index.php?showtopic...&hl=Filming Where are the dimebags from anyway??? ....that's right......FROM CALGARY!!!!!! Nice fish though Birchy!!!!
  23. Islander Reels. I've got four now, along with a few extra spools, and that will nicely cover all the fishing I currently do - from small trout in small creeks to Salmon in big rivers.
  24. The only rivers of any size in the area are the Kettle and the Granby. The Columbia is about 45 minutes away with some grat rainbow fishing, but you pretty well need a boat of some sort. There is lots of good small creek fishing in the area.
  25. Likely a rainbow, or a hybrid with westslope cutts.
