Canucks blew away the leafs and shut out the oilers. Really happy about the win over the leafs. I was in Ontario early last week and made a lot of bets (for beer) with the poor suckers who live out there. I go back again next week to start collecting. :) -

What Is The Truth About The H1n1 Flu?
Highlander replied to a topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
H1N1 does not appear to be as severe as other flu bugs in the past, however I read somewhere that it is expected that 1/3 of the population will get it. I don't know how easily the virus mutates, but I thought that the viruses generally (but not always)originate in SE Asia where waterfowl, pigs and humans are in close contact. I don't know if there are a number of variations of the H1N1 virus going around with some more virulent than others. A vaccination may or may not prevent you from getting it, but if you do, the severity is likely to be much less. -
A common misconception, and so is the #14 fly limitation. I've had a 000 for a few years and it's my favourite rod. While it enables you to feel the fight from a smaller fish it is absolutely untrue that you cannot fight bigger fish with it without exhausing them. You have to keep the rod tip lower and fight the fish from the lower portion of the rod. I've landed 19 inch cutties in the same time it would have taken me to land them with a 5-wt. While I'm not chucking pike flies with it, I have no problem throwing small streamers, weighted nymphs and larger dries. I don't use a 000 line, I much prefer the action of the rod when I pair it with a 1-wt line. It casts much further too. Don't get me wrong, this is not a 1-wt rod. I just prefer the feel when it casts a 1-wt line. Sage has always manufactured rods which can cast a number of line weights well.
-
If you already have a six, there won't be too much difference going to a 5-wt. For small streams I'd tend to go much smaller, a maximum of a 3-wt. But then I fish a 000 for good sized westslopes. My suggestion would be to get a 3-wt. If you can, borrow one from a friend and try it for a full day on the type of water you like to fish. Length of the rod is another factor in the decision.

Salmon and sea trout are showing up in the Seine at Paris for the first time in about 100 years. I was there in March and the night manager and I spent several hours showing each other our fish pictures. The is apparantly a really good Pike spot on the river just downstream of the "Touristy area". I didn't bring a rod along and my daughter had a large list of things she wanted to see while we were there, so there was no fishing for me. Next time.....Normandy and spring creeks!!

Online Travel Websites
Highlander replied to ÜberFly's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I've booked through expedia several times and had no problems whatsoever. Last time was in March and a trip to Paris with my daughter for 8 days. Air and hotel, including all taxes, $3,200. Hotel was great, within a block of the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysee. I watched the prices drop and drop until 4 weeks before our trip. If I'd booked in November, same flights and hotel would have cost double. -
This might just be the most reasoned and intelligent post on this topic that I've read over the past few years. Thanks Rusty. Alberta needs to put some level of protection in place on some of it's "high value" waters or see them "loved to death" through overuse/misuse. I'm from BC and I would happily pay more to fish in Alberta. If you are looking at getting more money to protect certain streams/waters then you have to look at charging more. In BC, as a resident angler, I pay several times more in license fees to fish my home province than I do to fish Alberta waters. But I also know that in BC, my license dollars are going back into the resource. When the changes to the BC licensing system were made, I had some reservations, but for the most part they are now gone. I'm hoping more BC waters become classified, including the Skagit, which may become overrun by guides in the near future (I've nothing against guides, only guides on this river).

If the Canucks can't sign the twins by July 1, look for them to take a run at Bouwmeester (unless of course the Flames sign him before then). Without the twins and Sundin, the canucks free up $16 Million in cap space. That buys a lot of help. look for at least one top line forward and one top 2 defensman, plus a couple of mid range helpers. Luongo, of course, stays. If the Flames are looking for a goaltender, Cory Schneider may be available.

British News Article About Canada
Highlander replied to Flytyer's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Here's a link to the original article from 2002. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/persona...ot---again.html This was written following the US bombing Canadian soldiers, killing 4. I'm proud to be a Canadian. I'm proud that Canada participates in so many peacekeeping missions and I am grateful for the brave men and women who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. -

Canucks grab back home ice advantage. Good win on the road. Also good to see Anaheim and Detroit beating each other up. Whoever wins between Chicago and Vancouver should have a great chance to get to the final. -

Woohoo, a bit of a scare in the third, but the Canucks prevail 5-3 and take game 1. Canucks went to sleep in the third, just dumping the puck out and letting Chicago come at them. But alls well that ends well and the Canucks draw first blood. -

It would have been a lot closer. Do you think Calgary would have even made the playoffs without Iginla? -

Great game last night. Calgary played well but ultimately they folded the tent and ran home to momma (just like I knew they would). Luongo stood on his head and now level on points and down to the last two games of the season.
