  1. Hey Brunsie you forgot something. When Jack goes to the Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller he conciders it a family reunion. Ya listen to the old fart. He sometimes knows what he speaks of. I couldn't agree more with his advice on reading anything Brian Chan and Phil Rowley have written and the Gilly is like a bible for stillwater fishermen. My favorite Chan book is Morris and Chan on Fly Fishing Trout Lakes. The Rowley one I like best is Fly Patterns for Stillwaters (A study of trout, entomology and tying). All of those books can be found on Amazon. Read all those before the ice goes off the lakes. Then you'll be all set. Rob
  2. Welcome aboard Colin. At least we won't go hungry now with Colin on our team. Great to see you join us Colin. Rob AKA The Fish'n Nut
  3. I just recently got a shipment in from Fly Tying Specialites. Absolutely fantastic quality products. I was extremely happy with each and everything I got from them. Yes, it's in the US and with the exchange and the shippping we end up paying a bit more. But it was worth every penny. http://www.flytyingspecialties.com/ Rob
  4. Get hold of Trout Waters Fly & Tackle in Kelowna. Talk to my buddies Nick or Savas. They will steer you in the right direction. Trout Waters Fly & Tackle 2280 Leckie Road, Unit C Call them at their toll free number 1 (888) 823 6633 You can check out their website at http://troutwaters.ca/index.htm The only problem with going in July is that it's the hottest time of year. Sort of the dog days of summer for fishing. Not to say that fish can't be caught all year round. You may have to do some traveling into the mountains around there to get to some of the cooler higher elevation lakes. Since your planning on driving out I'd suggest a couple of different routes. I'd say to go either to Revelstoke and head south on Hwy 23. Go to Nakusp and fish at Summit lake. Then take the road down south to Fauquier and take the ferry across Arrow Lake and head west on Hwy 6 through the Monashee route through the mountains through to Vernon. Along that route is a lot of lakes and creeks to explore. Some of the lakes have resorts like Echo Lake. Or you can take the southern route through Fernie, Cranbrook and Creston on Highway 3. There are lots of places to explore through the Kootenays. You may not actually make it to Penticton though. Here is some contact information if you head that route. Kootenay Fly Shop 1-877-423-4483 821-7th Ave, Fernie BC http://www.kootenayflyshop.ca/index.html Hope this helps. Rob
  5. I know this one isn't fly fishing related. But this one means the most to me. My dad was sick with cancer and wanted to go on one last salmon/halibut fishing trip. I arranged a trip at the end of August. We met in Ucluelet and we went out for one last trip. He died New Years day.
  6. I've caught tons of pinks. 2 years ago I caught over 100 in the season. I used my 8wt and wouldn't use less. Not that you can't land a pink on a 5wt because cirtainly you can. But there is always the chance of getting a chum and a spring. If you get a chum you may as well be able to land it. I've landed some chum in the 25lb range with my 8wt. But they would have snapped a 5 wt or at the least they would have broken it off. Springs? Well there isn't much of a chance of landing them with an 8 wt let alone a 5 wt. I've seen them landed on an 8wt. But barely. So your 7wt will do. But I'd cirtainly say to go with a larger rod like an 8 or 9wt.
  7. Here is a link to a great video of the figure 8 knot. Link to the figure 8 Loop Knot You can slow up the video and get a great idea of how to tie it if you tie one along while watching it. I'm more a fan of the Perfection Loop. Link to the Perfection Loop Knot Here is a link to all the knots that they have. Not a bad idea to have this one in your favorites and practice and get good at half a dozen of them if not all of them. Cheers, Rob
  8. When you look at the figures I showed the $1000 that I was talking about would be about 3 billion from the predicted 15 billion. Hopefully they can still get by on a 12 billion. Remember this is surplus dollars were talking about. Yes finish that damn ring road and get our healthcare system figured out. Stick some in the Heritage Trust Fund. I think if they are doing their job they should still have a few billion extra after all that. Rob
  9. In January 2006 Ralph gave us $400 Ralphy Bucks. We all took our cheques and spent them wisely. Well didn't we? What did you spend yours on? The price of a barrell of oil in January 2006 was in the $60 a barrell mark. So here's my question to you all. Now that the price of oil is topping $140 a barrell I estimate the government's surplus should be in the 15 BILLION range. Don't you all think that Ed Stelmack should shell out a bit of this surplus to us? If the oil was less than half of todays price and Ralph gave us $400, I don't think Ed would be out of line giving us each $1000 today. What do you think folks? Couldn't you use an extra $1000? Send your thoughts to the Conservatives. http://www.albertapc.ab.ca/admin/guestbookx/guestbook.cfm It's about time Ed gave something back to us. Oh ya here is his latest FREEBEE. I guess beggers can't be choosey. Rob
  10. You can now add in 2008 Detroit Red Wings
  11. Sounds like you did Ok in spite of the conditions. Sorry I didn't see your first posting or I would have pointed you towards some good fishing. Send me an email before you go next time and I'll be happy to share a few of my favorite places along your way. You can email me at kingfisherrodbuilding@hotmail.com Cheers, Rob
  12. One thing to remember is that puppies like to chew. I put the hottest hot sauce on my cupboards and chairs so my lab puppy wouldn't keep chewing them. It worked. So I put it on everything I didn't want her to chew.
  13. Nice stuff for sure. I really like that shadow box. That represents a lot of work in that little box. What are you using for the white latex? It looks like you have cut strips of it from something. Rob
  14. The place is under 2 feet of water right now. Not such a bargain after all.
  15. Hey Don. My wife and I have gone down to Montana a few times and she really likes the Seeley Lake area off of Hwy 83. It's east and north of Missula. There are a few lakes right around the area and some nice campsites all along the highway and on the lakes. It's sort of a little resort town. But nothing like Banff. It's just a small area with terrain like the Okanagan area. As for fishing in the area. There are plenty of lakes in the area. As for rivers and creeks there is the Blackfoot or Rock Creek. Rock Creek has good access and there are lots of trout in the lower system, so there's no need to drive too far up the valley. Access is not quite as good on the Blackfoot, but there's still miles of water to explore. Anywhere that looks good will probably hold fish. Even the Clearwater River close to Seely Lake has fair fishing. I fished the Clearwater River. It has good acces to it south of Seeley Lake on Hwy 200. Just west of the Hwy 83 and Hwy 200 intersection. You follow it along and then head south at the Sunset Hill Road. Or you can go east and then head south on the Sperry Grade Road. Both areas offer good access to the river. The one at Sunset Hill Road even has a nice parking area for the fishermen. If your going down to Columbia Falls area make sure and stop in at Arends Fly Shop Here is a link to their website.. It's just on the side of the highway. Bob Arends is a great guy with lots of knowledge of the area. Have a great trip. Cheers, Rob
  16. Good luck guys. Sounds like an interesting challange. I can't wait to see the results. Rob
  17. I agree the fines are good. But banning them for only 5 years? I'd say double that at the very least. Rob
  18. WOW last nights game was simply amazing. Great to see them finally bring their A game. Too bad they couldn't do that more often. They'll need to play every game from here on in like that in order to move on and be successfull. Christain Huselius was amazing for a guy his size. He was flying last night. Hitting guys. Forechecking like no tomorrow. Shooting on net. Nolan was simply great to watch. He's really been an inspiration for others to follow. I was sceptical when he first came over. I thought "not another old washed up player like Amonte". I'm glad he's proven me wrong. I did have a beef with the 3 stars though. Reger got third star. He was ok but 3rd star? I think Nolan deserved it more. As for Lankow and Kipper getting the other 2 you bet your bottom dollar they deserved it. Lankow blocked shots and was amazing to watch him play. Kipper was on top of his game. Nice to see him bounce back from his crappy performance in game 4. Rob
  19. I was wondering the same thing. It sounded like you had something specific in mind when you asked for the pics. Come on Andy, don't keep us in suspense. Rob
  20. Hey Pegger. Welcome to the board. If I were you I'd contact the Canadian Fly Fisher magazine and check out the February/April 2007 edition of the Canadian Fly Fisher magazine. In it is an article by Phil Rowley about the Tiger Trout in Manitoba. When Phil was in Calgary last time I talked to him about fishing for these tiger trout. He was so excited he was drooling about it and almost spitting at me while he was talking to me about them. He was like a kid in a candy shop. If I were you I'd read the article and get out to Twin Lake and find some of these babies. Apparently they are a hybrid of a fish. Crossed between a female brown trout and a male brook trout. From what Phil said they are extremely aggressive. Here is the contact information for the Canadian Fly Fisher magazine. The Canadian Fly Fisher 389 Bridge St. West Belleville, Ontario Canada, K8N 4Z2 Phone (613) 966-8017 Toll free 1-888-805-5608 email mail:info@canflyfish.com I found a tag in the middle of the magazine that I have and it says they charge only $7.00 for a back issue. Shipping and taxes included. Rob, no I don't own the magazine. But it's about fly fishing so I bought it.
  21. Todd is a good friend of mine, and a great asset to the team. Not just a good fisherman, but cirtainly a great ambassator to Canada. Their goal was to place in the top 10 and they did that. Good to see them have success. Rob
  22. Your so right. I wonder where this punk will get a job now? Actually, who cares? He'll now be where he belongs. In a cell with Bubba. I love that video. Rob
  23. Well another game Calgary should have won. It was a spirited affair. But Calgary comes up short handed once again. There were good points and bad points in the game. The good points The game was fast paced. There were lots of hitting on both sides. One good fight in the first period. The bad points The officiating was horendous. Edmonton won. Any other observations anyone wants to add? Rob
  24. Nice one Don. That looks like a good damsel pattern. Fished on a clear intermediate line near some marl would probably produce some good action. Rob
