Ice Fishing Special Regulation Lakes
reevesr1 replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
RW, Hey man, it's pretty obvious you hate the board and many of the people here. Your posts are almost uniformly negative, which is too bad. I'm pretty sure (and I could be wrong, but I doubt it) you are a reincarnation of a guy who retired from the board a while ago because he didn't like the direction it was taking. That guy had something to contribute and was a good guy to fish with and debate with. You seem to want to contribute nothing, just point out all the problems with the board and many of its members. If that is going to be your persona, fine, but don't expect any positive replies. I sure wish you would retire this Red Wiggler character, as he brings nothing to the table. Bring back the old persona. -
Actually, in saltwater it's the opposite. The fishing just before a storm, or a cold front, can be spectacular. It's like they feed hard before the wind starts to blow and muddy up the water. Definitely based on pressure. Haven't fished rivers enough yet to notice a correlation. My bet would be if it affects the bug life, it affects fishing.

You may want to try MissinTheBow. I know he does a bit of BC Lake fishing, and has developed the patience required to fish chironomids. Says he catches big fish, but I didn't see the pictures....

Speaking of Lynn, how long did she go to Mexico for? Kinda boring around here without her and LS around to keep us straight.

I'm done ranting, for today anyway. Hijacking too. For today anyway. Edit: wait now, my hijack was in reply to bobe's hijack, so I think my hijack should be copied into his hijack. This is getting confusing. Don, I think I should meet you on the North Raven and you can help me figure it out.

Don, Now I'm really sorry for the hijack. Clive, I did not realize bobe's comment was directed at you. I read your comment as a joke, as you intended. BobE, While I obviously agree that ther can be an element of anti-any method of fishing other than ff, I don't think dryfly fits in that category. Me thinks you overreacted. Seems to be a trend! -

Ice Fishing Special Regulation Lakes

Hey BobE, This board does not have a group mentality any more than there is a group spin fisher mentality or group ice fishing mentality. My hope (or at least my belief) is most people have little issue with ice fishing, or any other form of fishing for that matter, as long as it is done within the regs. They just don't speak up as much. From my standpoint, the whole "fly fishermen don't poach" argument is totally baseless. Most fishermen, regardless of preferred style, don't poach. If a poacher happens to be an ice fishermen, the response is not BAN ICEFISHING! Same with spinner, or flyrod, or whatever. It is to stop poaching. Style of fishing has nothing to do with it. While I'm on a rant, I'll go back to an old one one of mine. I categorically reject any argument that bans one form of fishing (and I mean any style of rod and reel)over another. I think, almost without exception, they are bullshit and elitist. The one exception would be bait fishing, for the mortality argument. I would agree with removing treble hooks in catch and release fisheries for their long term effects. But if I can fly fish a river, my friends should be able to spin fish. And if the lake is open seasonally, and there happens to be ice, then ice fishing is ok too. Follow the rules and all is good. It never ceases to amaze me how people can internally justify limiting someones access to fishing just because they don't have a skinny rod (or as a friend of mine calls it a "skinny gay pole"). If you want to ban all forms of fishing, fine. But to pick one over the other is crapola. Set rules that conserve, not rules that restrict. Especially don't set rules that restrict everyone who does it different than you. That's not conservation, that's greed. Rant off. -
I don't really know a whole bunch about this, just what I've read on various boards here and back home. In the states, the animal rights groups are certainly trying to eliminate/outlaw fishing on cruelty to animals grounds. While eventually they may succeed, this success is years and years in the future, if ever. Far too many recreational hunters and fishermen (read: votes) for this to gain any traction, yet. But the younger generation is being taught differently than most of us were. If you don't get your children involved, they may tune in to the agenda of the animal rights groups and the day when fishing and hunting is banned gets closer. That said, a far more dangerous tact these groups and others are taking in the near term are fishing exclusion zones. Basically like a wildlife preserve, but for fish. And the places they target just happen to coincide with the best fishing, go figure. Don't know if there is anything here like that, I sure hope not.

That is the most amazing thing I've ever seen, but you have to really look close and concentrate to get the full effect. Shocking!

Online Disclosure Of Fishing Holes
reevesr1 replied to Mudflap's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
If you are an experienced fisherman, I totally agree that finding your own water is more satisfying. Or discovering a new pocket in a place that's been fished a 1000 times is fun too. But for someone brand new, this activity is pretty tough. Pointing them to a section of water that holds fish and showing them how to do it can help them out immensely. They don't have to wonder if they are fishing the right spot, and can Work on technique and build confidence. As they learn to catch, thet will naturally start looking for their own water. Now, would I show someone new my most productive spots? No. But will I show them popular city runs? You bet. I've said this before. To me, one of the primary functions of this board should be the promotion of the sport. I've had many people on this board help me out and show me locations. It has shortened my learning curve immensely . I feel obligated to return the favor. For those who don't agree, I politely say tough *hit. -
Back when I hunted ducks (a LONG time ago, I can't get up that early any more), Pintails were the ultimate. Don't know what they are like here, but by the time they got to Texas they were WARY, to say the least. They would circle the decoys multiple times, and when you had the guts to try to peek, you could see them craning their necks looking around. Smart buggers, unlike big dumb green heads. I remember one group of about 6 birds circling my brother and I like 10 times. We had two groups of teal light while we are waiting for the sprigs. After 5 minutes they finally start to drop in, but flared for no reason and lit 50 yds down from us. We then waited, hoping they would swim over. By the time we gave up, maybe 15 minutes or so later, another group of teal and a group of balpate (wigeons) had hit the decoys. I don't remember how many we got when we finally stood up, but I do remember none of them were sprigs. Stupid Pintail!

Nice Ed! Did you try a leech? I drifted one for a bit today, but in looking at your pictures I need to go a bit bigger.

I'd use 'em, but I'm a fish ho.

I have Chota's as well. I have one very hard year on them and some stitching has broken loose. They can easily be repaired if I bring them to a shop. I also will say they are almost always wet and/or frozen as I leave them in my car. I am very rough on my gear, so anything that lasts a year without any major issues has been thoroughly tested! I also lost the studs, but just went to HD and got some more.

My wife is headed to Texas this month. They have it there and I used to use it. I could probablky coerce her into getting several spools if anyone is interested. Are we talking about their leader material, or do they make tippet as well? Whichever, I certainly know a shop that will carry it.

Hey Jeff, No worries, just wanted to point out how it sounded. And not to piss off all those who've worked hard to turn BH and Outpost to trohpy lakes, but I would submit this is not a conservation issue. These are stocked lakes. I am 100 per cent for maintaining these lakes, and creating others, as trophy fisheries. But it isn't in the name of conservation.

What exactly is a real flycaster? So if Tako loves to fly fish, does it all summer long, but uses a fly rod, leech, and corky (its an indi Tako!) through a hole in the ice, he is not a real flycaster? I'd go. Catch 'em and release 'em, just like the other times I've been to Bullshead. Would be a welcome change from fighting the wind.

What's Good About Walmart
reevesr1 replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Don, MTB=MissinTheBow. We had this argument a while ago. And hate, in this case, was more rhetoric than actual (not the right word, but I can't think of it) Been in Walmart 100s of times. Helps to know when they are your friend. They are almost always the cheapest, at least where I'm from. I also go to small shops. Spend more there. Sometimes unnecessarily, but I do that for friends too. And they'll be in Rocky. Only a matter of time. -

Don, With all due respect, and I mean that, thats a bullshit argument. You can get cheap toys with lead poisoning pretty much anywhere that buys chinese toys, which is pretty much everywhere. Also, any aware person who doesn't think Walmart serves a purpose is not sincere. Even if you do not shop there, they keep the prices of other stores down. I've gone through this argument with MTB before, and I realize it's a waste of time. Hating the big kid on the block is too easy to do. But, I'm not a stupid shopper. I know the difference between cheap and inexpensive. If I can get corn flakes, or a can of corn, or a tube of toothpaste at Walmart for less than the competition, then I'm buying from Walmart. -
Online Disclosure Of Fishing Holes

The unfortunate truth (and I hope I'm wrong) is the site is on the slippery slope. Once a fishing website gets really popular, there will always be issues with posting, however general, of fishing locations, techniques, etc. Once that happens, people get afraid to post reports. Once that happens, the site begins to loose relevance. One of the things that make the sites popular in the first place are fishing reports. You can only read about technique and tips so much, and the locker room banter gets a bit old. People want to read about other people having success so they have a better feeling about having success themselves. As for me, I'll continue to post fishing reports as long as I go fishing. I will probably rarely give anything other than general locale, but I will try to give what type of water I was fishing and what works, or what didn't work. I sincerely hope that the people better than me (which is almost everyone) continues to do the same so I can continue to learn. -

Hard to believe they stay in business, being that they suck so bad. Wait a minute, aren't they the biggest retail company in the world and getting bigger all the time? Hard to reconcile that with their absolute suckage. Or maybe they have some things figured out? Like the most efficient distribution system going? And the fact that at the end of the day, lots and lots of people just want it cheap?? -
I love Dave Barry! Installing tile is easy; Step 1: wife decides she needs new tile Step 2: explain to wife that you haven't done it before, are sure you can, don't need instructions, and how a botched job will detract from the look and value of the house. Step 3: tell wife "sure, if you want, I can call a professional tile company. I mean, if you really think so." Step 4: Fish all day while tiling professional is supervised by wife. Easy peasy.
