Bow River Clean Up 2008 (update)
reevesr1 replied to ÜberFly's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
I'd like to add my apologies as well. I spoke too soon on this one! Maybe in 8 yrs or so when all the kids are older! -
ARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

There is a post called "New to the Bow-Need Help" in General Chat back in may or june. I'd link it, but can't figure it out on the bberry. There is a discussion on nymphing, among other things. Also SJW has a Nymphing primer that is really good.

And they are sensitive as all get out. You will need to replace your leader a lot more often tho.

Dave, Upload the pictures to a Picture server like ImageShack of Photobucket. When uploading, select a lower resolution. I use Imageshack and select resize the image 15" monitor resolution. The picture will upload to a size usable by this site. Once uploaded, find the direct link to image URL. Copy it, select the Image icon in the FFC dialog box you are typing the report in, then copy the URL into the image dialog box. I think you can then post as many as 10 pictures (maybe a bit less) into a single post.

Man, I sure agree on the hopper/dropper thing. I find when I get tuned into the dry, when I get a take on the dropper I tend to be slow and vice-versa. I missed two really nice fish the other day that hit the dropper after several on the dry because I was too slow. It is particularly hard when you see the flash of the fish taking your nymph and wonder "was that the nymph or the dry??"

While being played to death would be bad news for you, the fish would certainly rejoice. Nice pics! Nice to see you are giving the rainbows a break by fishing for the pike.

I was going to say the same thing about the Mountain Gorillas. They just found 100K of them that no one knew existed. Stunning, really. I don't really believe in Sasquatch. It is difficult for me to believe no one has ever come up with conclusive proof. That said, the discovery of 100K apes that no one knew existed has challenged that belief.

tbone, I had/have HUGE problems with setting the hook when fishing dries. First off, I hit them too hard (nymphing hookset) and too fast. When I try to wait a second (gottacha or whatever) and then lift the rod like I'm trying to cast it tends to make me too slow. I practiced on some willing small fish yesterday and seem to be getting it down better as my hookrate was much better at the end. I mentally said "take" and then lifted the rod like I was trying to cast. Seemed to work pretty well. Also, keep control of your slack! If there is too much it will slow you too much I think.

Guys, It takes awesome underwater pics in underwater mode. You can use underwater mode and burst (like 1 pic a second) mode to give yourself the best chance for a good shot. Burst mode does drop the resolution some, but the pictures are fine unless you want to make a 8X10 or something.

Happy birthday Chris!

Iceman, Did you and Maverick remain friends? Still keep in touch? Did he stayed married to Kelli McGillis? I hope you hooked up with Meg Ryan after she got over Goose. She was hot back in the day. I've been using an XDP since the winter, sort of testing it for Hanson's. The thought being if I can't break it, it must be good. It has been my go to reel for awhile now. Very smooth easy to operate drag, wide arbor, light (particularly for a $150.00 reel), seems to be made really well and looks really good. Mine is in chrome, but if I had the option, I'd get the gun metal blue one. And I didn't break it. Wayne asked for it back the other day. I said, "what are you talking about?" Great reel. I highly recommend it.

Tim, There are a couple of ways. The quickest is to hit the menu button, select setup and select format. It reformats the memory card and in doing so erases all the pictures. Takes a few seconds. The other way is to hit the playback button (the one with the little arrow and star) then hit menu, and then hit erase. Easy peasy, sort of. weedy's way works too.

The man is holding me down! Those bastards. Yawn.

Nice fish there Ed. Where ya been?

Agreed. It's when they don't deserve it that I have issues (though I completely agree that this is not the case in this instance) I'm not as liberal as I may seem......Though I do like to stick it to Sun from time to time, don't know why, he seems like a nice enough guy. I just find it fun for some reason. Hope we get to fish together one day Sun. I can promise it would be entertaining!!

A couple of points: I am not disputing the usefulness of a taser. I think when used properly, it is an excellent tool. But when used improperly there needs to be consequences. One of my favorite quotes is (paraphrased) "just because you have a hammer, not everything is a nail." Sun, I have absolutely no issue with what you said about parenting. But I absolutely think you have to be very careful about asking for harsher law and order. While I would agree that there is too much lenience today, in my mind too little lenience is far, far worse. The balance is very difficult to pull off. Our society is based on innocent until proven guilty. Thankfully. To have a totally just society more based on guilty until proven innocent, the people making the decisions have to be just themselves. Not some of them, ALL of them. Can we say that? Most cops are hard working, fair, just individuals doing an impossible job. Some are not. Not many, but enough to make me petrified of a system of guilty until proven innocence. I could say exactly the same thing about judges, prosecutors, etc. Now once convicted and sentenced, time needs to be served. And when the crime is harsh, the punishment should be harsh. The problem is keeping people in jail is expensive. And until it is better funded, people will be let you early. I go back and forth internally about the death penalty. Right now, I think I'm against it. I have a hard time reconciling myself with the possibility of killing an innocent person. I also truly believe it is better to think the best about people than think the worst. Does that make me naive? Probably. But I would much rather think the best of someone and be disappointed periodically in them (which happens very seldom) than spend my life thinking the worst. I'm happier thinking the best. Makes me a bit of a Pollyanna. I'm ok with that. Pythagoras, I think the Taser was needed. I also know it is ABSOLUTELY being overused. The two things aren't mutually exclusive. I'm not saying get rid of it. I'm saying punish those using it incorrectly. Good cops need praise. Bad cops need punishment, just like any other criminal. I was in the military for 8 yrs, and I'd say exactly the same thing about any service member. You would have a hard time finding anyone who respects good law enforcement officers more than I do. Or loath bad ones more than I do. Edit: A bad cop is not one who thinks he is in imminent danger and uses a taser. A bad cop is one that knows he is not in danger and uses a taser out of anger.

Cool, going old testament. Should we stone adulterers? A crucifixion or two? I haven't seen a nice evisceration in years. Kill the wrong guy every now and then, ahhh too bad. The price of a "proper" justice system, no? This sentiment fits right in with some middle eastern, pacific rim, and countries in southern climes. Again, nice places to live without much crime. I can just see the Canadians lining up to emigrate to these "safe" havens. Be careful what you wish for. One day you might get it. You'll be safe, but terrified.
-
Phew. Glad your not making the laws. Edit: Just to be clear, I say the above because I'm pretty sure your justice system is based on the same model as the US justice system. Neither of these "err on the side of the law." Usually despotic regimes do that. Go try some out, I'm sure they are nice places to live. Hope you are never accused of anything. Ours err on the side of the accused. Not perfect either, but again, better than the alternative.

Milano's from Hanson's. I think they are in the $300.00 range. My guess would be 150-200 trips so far. One leak from Barbed wire, one from closing the trunk on the heel.

I don't know any of the specifics of this case. It could have been completely legit use of a Taser. But, you would have to be completely blind to not see Tasers being over used. Are they better than a real gun? Well, duh. But if you shoot a gun at someone, you freaking well know you may very well kill them. Not so with a Taser, the odds are you are just going to incapacitate him. And because of this, IMHO, they are being used far too frequently when a potential deadly amount of force is not warranted. If you are a law enforcement officer, and you use it where it is not required, then the full weight of the law should fall on you. That said, they are a great tool when used properly. As they almost always are. And I completely agree with RW. To give it the blanked "punk kid wasn't raised right" sentiment is harsh. You don't have the slightest idea how that kid was raised. Oh, and if that makes me a bleeding heart do gooder, then so be it. I like that better than the alternative.

Come on, you guys are just putting poor Drew on. Everybody knows that there is no good fishing before 10 am, or after 8 PM. Nor is the fishing good when the water is cloudy, or high, or if it's raining. Clouds aren't very good either. Wind sucks. Cold sucks. Weekdays really suck because fish get confused when no people are around. Fishing less than 30 ft of the bank is an utter waste of time. Take a few months to practice casting really, really far. The best time to practice is anytime between Jun-October. Really, the only time to fish is on the weekends on warm, cloud free days between 10 AM and 8 PM. Fish only mid river runs. Really. I promise.

Don't I know it. But I think we all need to be reminded every once in awhile how lucky we all really are. By the way, it's about time you and I got out! I know a place in BC........

speaking as an old wet wading flats fisherman, I can honestly say I've NEVER waded to shore to, uhh, you know. The solution to pollution is dilution!

The bull was caught with a #12 Hares Ear, no indi. I thought that in BC you could only use 1 fly, no weight, no indicator until I read the rules a little closer. i was right on the 1 fly part, but if they don't specify "Fly Fishing Only" you can use weight and indicators. But if I had brought some bully streamers, you can bet I would have used them!
