  1. I've personally been put in a semi-dangerous situation because of that boat needlessly bombing around. I had anchored in a calm back eddy to mess with some gear when I get a high speed flyby. The giant wake made made me come un-anchored and before I could react I'm into the main fast current with my anchor dragging and hands busy. A bit of a scramble ensued but I recovered. This happened not just the once but twice in the same afternoon. I was a bit steamed as these guys were just cruising on our dime. I'm fully supportive of emergency services and training exercises but this was just joy ridding. There's no need for that speed if it's a just patrol. Cops don't fly around with lights on running red lights just for fun. At least as far as I know.
  2. Hey fly junkies. I'm wondering how to look up flow data from specific time frames. I know I can find the real time flow info on http://rivers.alberta.ca but I'm looking to compare the data to previous years and stuff. Also to try and figure out if certain streams have peaked or are yet to peak. Things like that. I'd assumed it was on the same site but I can't seem to figure it out. I may have gone blind to it. Just trying to plan trips to some fishable water close by. I know there's no guarantees but I like the data anyway. Any insights?
  3. I sat down at my bench today intent on tying dragonfly nymphs and ended up tying some all white decivers instead. Seemed appropriate.
  4. I wish we could just learn to leave things alone and stop thinking that we have all the answers.
  5. You can always salvage a hook by giving it a shave with your exacto knife.
  6. I started with streamers and pike flies. I'm far from an expert but in my opinion one should... - Tie only what you will use. Unless you're trying to learn to be generalist and sell flies. - Buy only what you need and cannot substitute. - Use your imagination. Mix and match. - Remember that you are tying for the fish and for yourself. So just because a fly tied on youtube uses one specific material does not mean you can't play around. It's mostly about learning techniques that when put together with certain materials make a fly. I use the deer hair at the base of my bucktails as the "elk hair" on elk hair caddis. Also as wing material on foam hoppers. Schlappen fathers rather than saddle hackle for my deceivers. Brushed out acrylic yarn as dubbing and fish hair etc. Nobody has complained so far. There are loads of flies that you can mix and match both materials and techniques to make something fishable and decent looking. Some patterns are more exacting that others and just will not float/fish right unless perfect. Streamers are usually pretty forgiving on that front.
  7. So are you just tying a general pattern or trying to match something specific with your sizes?
  8. Thanks for the feedback. What sizes do you guys usually shoot for with your Klinkhammers? The thing that throws me off is the Daiich designated klinkhammer hooks are so much longer than regular curved body hooks. Such that a #16 klinkhammer is easily a size 12 on a regular curved hook.
  9. My first try at a klinkhammer. A little fatter than it should be but then again so am I.
  10. A skull head deceiver for pike. I call this one the Bumble Bee Buzzer And the Candy Cane Copper Chironomid
  11. That was a quote from the site, not my own comments. I agree that we should all be trying our best to prevent the spread of all invasive species. Sadly however I believe that when things like this spread it's by people who've never even heard of whiling disease. Hikers, boaters, kids, dogs, ducks and geese... river users come in all forms and not just fishermen. That's not to say that you should just say eff it and ignore the problem. Or that just because it's in one part of the river that all parts are affected. It's known to affect hatchlings more easily and so some tribs that are free of the disease can spawn healthy fish in watersheds that are deemed as infected.
  12. Additional detections of whirling disease from the ongoing sampling and testing do not mean the disease is spreading. Whirling disease may have been present for several years.
  13. Not sure if this is the right place to post this but here it goes. Open to the public, there's going to be lots of great stuff up for grabs here this year. Or if you have things you want to sell bring them. Come on out but don't bid against me because I'm going to be buying. This is taken straight from their site http://hookandhackleclub.org/special_events_63.html Wednesday, Apr 26, 2017 Where Calgary Hook and Hackle Club / Bow Waters Canoe Club map Calendar Hook and Hackle Club Description Please take the opportunity to do some spring cleaning at home and identify any items (they don't have to be fishing-related!) you want to donate to the auction. For more valuable items (worth more than $50 or so) that you may want to sell rather than donate, let us know your minimum price and we will set that as the "reserve price" on the item. If our auctioneer is able to solicit a final bid that is greater than the reserve price, you receive the reserve price and the club keeps the difference. If bids do not exceed the reserve price, you take your item back home. Plan to arrive with your items between 6:00 and 6:45 pm - the bidding starts at 7:00 pm sharp! Also, please take note of the following to help ensure the evening runs smoothly: 1. The auction is open to everyone. Members and guests may donate items and participate in the bidding. 2. All bidders will register with the Treasurer and receive a bidder number. 3. If you plan to bid, please do not forget to bring payment! Canadian cash or cheques accepted. Cheque payments work best for us as our ability to make change can sometimes be limited. 4. Please plan to pay for your items either at the end of the evening or at the break about halfway through. It is very difficult for us to accept payments and make change, etc. while the live auction is going on. NOTE: All payments MUST be in cash or check. No exceptions. Thank you to members who have helped out by obtaining donations from various local businesses.
  14. Thanks Lornce, Would you tie the fur to that chain? Or are you taking about glue?
  15. Quite the survey. Just about every question is "Read page # and tell us what you think of it". The theme of First Nations keeps popping up. The false image of them as stewards of the land has been beaten to death. As if your family background makes you qualified as a conservationist. So called "traditional practices" are a big reason why we need better conservation plans.
  16. That's probably a good idea. I'm thinking the glue would need to be a flexible type. Any suggestions?
  17. Wow, "great" is an understatement. It looks like a natural glued to a hook.
  18. Hey All, Anyone substitute craft fur for rabbit fur strips when tying things that use trailing fur strips? (bunny leech etc.) I've tried searching but I can't come up with a good answer. I'm wondering about the suitability/durability of the craft fur if used as a trailing strip because it doesn't have that rabbit hide like leather backing. Any input appreciated.
