  1. Nice to see some common sense here. I agree with some of the original letter/post but times change, technology changes and what we do changes. I mean at one time thalidamide was thought to be safe. My Dad worked in a shipyard where they told him there was no proof that working inside a steel hull while riveters worked outside was dangerous to your hearing. My question almost every day though, is why we let kids who can barely ride a bike, navigate through traffic in the city? I mean man I have several heart attacks every week and I am very careful around bike riders. Anyway, good posts good answeres!!!
  2. Thanks!! I will give them a call at Coutry Pleasures and see what I can find!
  3. I like that style. Sort of reminds me of some Haig-Brown flies I tied a few years ago.
  4. Mike I took a casting class years ago with Neil but by then I had so many bad habits there was no hope. Is that book/binder still available?
  5. That's a hard question because I learned 90% of what I know from books, there was nobody to teach me when I started in '69....or at least nobody that had time. I think the book that got me looking at materials was by Poul Jorgensen "Modern Flydressing for the Practical Angler" I think that is the title.....too lazy to run downstairs. But LaFontaines books as well as Helen Shaws book were invaluable....Hmmm. I guess even though it is out of print I'll go with Poul Jorgensens'book.
  6. If you are putting them in the washer maybe try the gentle cycle? The straps may not like the heavy agitation?
  7. What kind of tool is that you are using and yes I know I am leaving myself wide open...but I like gadgets and stuff and I must have one!
  8. Well that's it! Another poor soul addicted! I hope you guys are satisfied! Nice fish though!
  9. I hope it turns out for you! There used to be a way down under the bridge by Mill Bay....can't remember if it is on the north side or south side of the Island Hwy where it goes through the edge of town there. But at anyrate you cross a good sized stream (Millstream??) Anyway if they haven't built that up you may still be able to walk down to the estuary there and fish searuns if they have not closed it. Let us know how it works out.
  10. I grew up fishing there. The trestle south of Lake Cowicahn on down would be my favourite stretch. Check at Bucky's in Duncan, the Kennets have been their fishing all of their lives and can help you out. Shawnigan Creek used to be good in the Fall but I haven't seen it for some time. Same with the Chemainus River. I don't suppose you have a tube or anything? Somenoes Lake can be good as well. If you go up to Cowichan Lake itself you may still be able to fish where the river comes out or go out past Youbou and fish the mouth of Cottonwood Creek. To be honest though, that stretch of river above Skutz is one of the best places. If you have some large woolly buggers or a crayfish type fly, sweep them under log jams and undercuts. Wish I was there I love the place, should never have left....Kerry
  11. Perhaps they know winter is coming and they want you to drag them out? I don't know other than perhaps it is a directional light thing, but that would be a wild drug induced guess!
  12. I hope they do as well as they should. Nice job great donation!!
  13. I found my dealers through e-bay and tend to use the same ones over and over. I like local support as well, but the shops have to deserve it. Poor service seems to be a Canadian custom from what I have read and experienced over the years. However I use TM Thorne out of Fort MacMurray and they are pretty darned good even compared to the U.S. Their prices are good and their service is second to none, so if you want to shop Canadian have a look (Google). Note I am not against shopping in the U.S. I just get stuff quicker from TM Thorne and that means I am perched by the mailbox for shorter periods of time.
  14. Dave Whitlock has a pattern that is similiar and yep it works. I tie one on a swimming nymph hook with a small bead head and it has done well for me. Good use of the fur their.
  15. Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, Red Squirrel you say tomaaato I say Tomoto! Just watch out for the moose!
  16. I like that leader staorage idea and will use it, thanks!
  17. I have a pocket in my pack I use until it is full. Quite a few years ago I came upon a camp of sorts with a pile of magazines left behind. All of them were addressed to the same person so I boxed them up and mailed them back. Cost me a couple of dollars but I figured it might make a point. Around town here there is a huge amount of construction and alot of the stuff from the construction sites blows over to Don Sparrow Lake where I clean up the shoreline in the Spring or any time I happen to be over there, though this year I think I have only been there twice. Sad thing is I am finding more and more tapered leader packages. One other thing, for folks who stuff there bits of leader etc. in their pockets, it is a pain isn't it? So cut a square of thin cardboard and snip a little slit in one corner and wrap your trimmed ends or found line on the card and stick the end in the slit to hold it in place. It is easier to keep in your pocket and you just toss out the whole thing when you get to a trash can....Kerry
  18. I don't see anything there you wouldn't use. I have dealt with this seller before with no problems. I had them send a kit to a class in a school and they received it with no problems....Kerry
  19. Sigh.....and so it begins.
  20. I remember years ago when they first planted them in the area. Twenty or so showed up on a friends farm and looked like they were staying so Fish and Wildlife came and took them away.
  21. No washing machine. The suggestion to turn them inside out and spray them down should work. Short of getting in them adding a tablespoon of dish soap, dumping an extra couple gallons of water in them and doing pilates for an hour that would be my suggestion as well. I have worn mine for many days/weeks/years though and never had to do this, perhaps I smell too saintly??
  22. I think all of the patterns I have seen call for dubbed natural haresear. This is more along the pheasant tail nymph lines. Thanks for the pictorial!
  23. Thanks for posting that! A good story!
  24. There should be alot of places to try out and lots of information down there as well. Freds' Custom Tackle is in Chilliwack so out of Vancouver a bit but on the Vedder River . Give them a call or check out their website. If you check out sporting goods stores or flyshops in the Vancouver area you should find more help....
