1961flyman Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 I used to hear about how great this Fishery was for Giant Brown Trout on Dry Flies. I fished it with a Guide 4 or 5 times in the early 2000's and it was wonderful.. I recall that there used to be a guiding community located in Red Deer to facilitate tourists etc.. What happened ? danhunt Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 It has never recovered from the floods, and whirling disease is/was likely part of the problem. 1 Quote
jayanderson Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 Floods, rampant poaching and an ever growing population of walleye and pike have made the brown trout's life quite difficult in the Red Deer river. I've only fished it since 2011 when I moved to Red Deer but with each passing year their numbers seem to decrease a bit. I've spoken with quite a few members of the local fly fishing community and it seems water quality and hatch numbers aren't what they once were as well. Quote
SilverDoctor Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 Fished it with a buddy last year, found no rising fish bug hatches or much in insect life under stones. Quote
bowbonehead Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 Definitely flood related as it rarely effects Brown Trout..... more of a Rainbow/Cutthroat disease as far as trout goes Quote
