Guest Sundancefisher Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 messy imitation? I have seen more fish caught on badly tied patterns versus really perfect patterns. Any thoughts on whether you feel flies have to be tied perfectly to work? Quote
bulltrout Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 as long as you are happy with them and the fish are taking them, who cares what the flies look like... Quote
dryfly Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Yeah sundance I agree. Trap some critters with large screen. Have close look....some nymphs actually have algae on them. Their bodies trap air bubbles. They are rather asymmetrical and wriggle and squirm. One suspects that ratty-ish flies more closely represent reality than the stiff super-life-like imitations. The BAW excepted. DBT is right...whatever makes the fish and us happy. Quote
Weedy1 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I'm a crappy tier and don't have a problem catching fish on my ties. The largest fish I caught this year was on this: Quote
Inconnu Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 One thing about what you are fishing with is that you have to have faith in it, or you will not fish it properly or thoroughly. The other thing is that what you might call poorly tied flies are rough and actually provide more movement in the water than some well tied patterns. For example a Tom Thumb seems to get more productive as it is pulled apart by fish taking it. Most flies are tied to appeal to aesthetics first and the fish second, so it really doesn't matter what your skill level is as a tyer, you can and will still catch fish. Weedy what is that pattern? Could you show a pic from another angle? Quote
Weedy1 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Weedy what is that pattern? Could you show a pic from another angle? Funny you should ask. Don't know what the pattern would be called, had a thread on it. It sure was successful at Dolberg in the fall. http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?...ic=1547&hl= Quote
ladystrange Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 i've caught fish on both ratty and well tied forms of the same pattern. but i have noticed that after a few times going through the ringer, the rattier one seems to end up catching not more fish persay but perhaps more consistently Quote
reevesr1 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 My dad used to say there are lures that catch fish, and lures that catch fishermen. I don't doubt the same is true of flies..... Quote
reevesr1 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 have u looked in sjw's flybox rick.... Hah! Its possible that dad's rule has an exception. SJW, if you give me one of your fully stocked fly boxes I'll test to see if those pretty shiny things catch fish. Quote

reevesr1 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 i think we can give ya the bulltrout love kit for 10g's jsut stocked her up with some new goodies lastweek we got paypal....... First off, what's this "we" crap? You pimpin' SJWs stuff now? And is 10g the give away rate? Seems a bit steep for streamers that are too heavy for me to cast and as such, are just going to repeatedly hit me in the head. But what the hell, if ya got paypal and I can put it on my credit card..... Quote
bigalcal Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 [ For example a Tom Thumb seems to get more productive as it is pulled apart by fish taking it. . Good advice. I usually put a new one on when they are mangled. I'll try that approach next time. Quote
bigalcal Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 I had a chance to grab some goodies from the "Bullie Love Kit" two summers ago at Racehorse campground. SJW's neighbour was there and brought it along with him. Hell I shoulda kidnapped it and held it for ransom!! Quote
