hydropsyche Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Get a load of this scud pattern (and his other patterns). That Herman is a god. I'm not worthy.... Latex Scud Quote
Inconnu Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 You are worthy and it really is no more rediculous than some of the other realistics out there. He did a pretty cool job on the critter! I need to look further to see if there is a tying description.... Quote
hydropsyche Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 I'll be on the lookout for a tying description too. I don't know if they catch fish but they sure do look cool. I'll be watching this thread Latex Scud Thread Quote
ladystrange Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 well. i'm curious. at least he uses latex surgical gloves. for once, i can't figure out the rest of the pattern. i have a few ideas but nothing concret that i am confident would work. Quote
DougC Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 It looks like the latex is woven with ostrich herl. I tie a Shane Stalcup caddis nymph that use's a very similar technique. It's actually a pretty simple weave to do - just don't ask me to put it into words! I'll try find a link for a description though. Sweet find with the website by the way, thanks for sharing. Quote
DougC Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Here is the best link I could find to the weaving technique and the fly is actually very similar: Pott's Weave this link also shows the weave: Pott's Weave 2 Hope this helps. Quote
ladystrange Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 except the latex looks smooth not ribbed. oh that's bad, but i cant think of any other way to describe it i wonder if he expoxied or used nail polish thanks for the link, a new thing to learn Quote
albannachxcuileag Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 LS, a quick look and here is the rough tie! Hook - any decent scud or shrimp hook Underbody possibly of shaped lead or thread build up but I would go with some lead at least to get it down Ostrich herl - top quality - dense fibre stuff Shell back - either the weave method in the thread or thin skin coloured with permanent markers and ribbed over with fine wire before the application of epoxy coat, Feelers - look to be Partridge hackle and the eyes are melted mono with black epoxy enamel on the outside edge So, what are you waiting for? Get them tied up! Quote
ladystrange Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 thanks AL. it's midnight, i'm going to bed. perhaps in the morning. but i will quickly edit and post one of my czech nymphs momentarily Quote
admin Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 That is a sweet looking fly. I love the 360 degree viewing, that is killer. I agree with AC in the pattern description. I think the ostrich is likely tied on with a mono rib on the bottom, perhaps 3-4 herls in what looks like a callibeatis colour. I'm thinking that the feelers may actually be a cree hackle and they look stiffer than the partridge. Either way, I think they look awesome. Quote
Tango Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Just a quick knock up, no shellback used. Tie front feelers and eyes in before you weight the hook, add lead to get shape required, cover with thread/floss. Tie mono rib and herl under hook, twist herl into a rope and pull back to eye, follow with rib, colour if needed, cover with epoxy. I've not looked at the pattern he used but you'll get the idea. epoxied Just had a look at the pattern, he does indeed use the Pott's weave. Quick knock up that way using ultralace instead of latex. Similar result but one takes 2 minutes to tie the other 10. Quote
hydropsyche Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Nice looking flies there, Tango. What I really like about this pattern is the eyes/feelers at the bend. Quote
Tango Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Nice looking flies there, Tango. What I really like about this pattern is the eyes/feelers at the bend. They were just very rough knock ups to show the same effect with/without the pain of weaving. I'll do tidy ones and put the step by steps up. Another couple of scuds for your perusal. http://ukflydressing.proboards83.com/index...read=1190546717 http://ukflydressing.proboards83.com/index...0542&page=1 Quote
ladystrange Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Tango, the first link works, the second doesnt show the pictures anymore. Quote
ladystrange Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 thanks for the visuals and tips on the weave. worked well. now just have to practice but the 1st one turned out fishable. will post pictures when i am happy. also, it appears i do not own any nail polish. so he's all bumpy for now Quote
