Midge Patterns For The Bow

Recommended Posts

I used a really easy #18

#18 Mustad

silver bead (tungsten)

black thread for the body (keep a thin profile though)

silver wire ribbing

very small amount of peacock hurl right behind the head of the bead.

Takes about 3 minutes or so per fly once you get cranking. You can tie about 3 dozen watching a hockey game, and they do work well in the Bow (as well as other places like the crow)

Cheers.

Had a bit o'luck with this one last winter

#18 scud hook

black micro/midge tube body over glue (pull tight to keep bulk down)

thin white antron wing

black UV dubbing thorax/head

I hung this under a worm and leech on the warmer days, it fished best at the end of my drift, just when the flies started to roll out.

Heres one from Terry H that I had bookmarked.

In the fall I have had luck with an olive emerger pattern, size 18, when the dry fly bwo is not working. The emerger I use as a general pattern is a size 16 curved hook in a white body and copper wire ribbing, with a few peacock herl tips for the throat and a black head. Works well on whitefish.

Yeah, I was looking at GGP's post from last year and I guess I didn't follow-up, like I was supposed to... :opps:

Pattern works great! Fairly easy to tie which I like! A few of mine did unravel on me so I started to put a coat of cement on both the thread and body - it's much better! Never tied as small as 20 but I think it would be a good pattern in 16, as well for the spring/summer/fall!!

Thanks guys. I like the beadhead pattern a lot.

An indicator works great when used with this pattern (or any other) as the point fly in a 3 fly rig!! :P
