Caddis Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 What's everyone's favorite hopper pattern for the Bow this time of year? I found using a foam body on choppy water works well for me, but is not as effective as a parachute imitation for slower presentations along the rivers edge where they have a better look at the fly. bigbowtrout Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I still like the old school Dave's hopper(Brown to your left was on a Dave's ) Quote
fishfreak Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 The Letort Hopper is one of my favourites. Other than that, I use big foam things with rubbery legs. Quote
trailhead Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I like the Chernobyl Ant/Club Sandwich foam jobs, but I have alos done well with the Dave's and letort hoppers Quote
grannyknot Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Brown foam hoppers for Calgary and downstream, Dave's for Cochrane and upstream. There is a huge difference between the naturals you'll find in Carseland and the ones you'll find in Canmore. I don't know if they're different species or what. Quote
cheeler Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I haven't had much time to try different ones out, so this is it for now: Quote
birchy Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Nice cheeler! Wish I had've thought of that.. The only hopper I've tried so far is the Letort - as per Hawgstoppah's list of recommended flies. Quote
SilverDoctor Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Nice cheeler! Wish I had've thought of that.. The only hopper I've tried so far is the Letort - as per Hawgstoppah's list of recommended flies. Letort Hopper Dave's Hopper are great. Here is the one I really like. Quote
flyangler Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I like the para hopper, but alternate with rubber legged foam hoppers. As much as I like to tie, I prefer to buy hoppers, they're such PITA flies. http://www.westfly./patterns/dry/parachutehopper.shtml http://www.ultimateflyfishing.com/fly_tyin...te%20Hopper.htm Quote
woolybugger Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Gotta go with the foam Club Sandwich hopper...works on pretty much any water, fast or still... However, size & color do come into play like most other bug imitations. Tan & yellow, tan and orange, tan, gray & yellow, gray & yellow in sizes 8 - 10 - 12. I find they work even when most of the hoppers are darker in color...probably 'cause most have lighter bellies. Knotted back legs add to the realizm, and leave the legs a bit long for more aciton in the surface film. Used 'em in a fly swap at the fly club & rec'd calls from 3 guys who wanted the pattern 'cause they worked so well. Taiter Quote
