  1. I use a fair amt of foam sheets....cheapest at the Dollar store & Wally world. You can also find great selection of colors at Michael's, and the price is pretty good too. Way cheaper than any fly shop. If you are doing anything in layers, cut sheets in half & stick 'em together with foam glue (craft shops) or smaller pieces with crazy glue. Elmer's or white glue doesn't hold well on foam. Haven't tried the spray adhesive used in photos shops yet.
  2. 1) Bow River... to catch something in the Upper Bow. So far nothing bigger than 4" 2: Cutthroat stream....to find one in this part of the Okanagan 3) Still water....learned a ton this spring & summer 'cause that's all that's open until July here in BC. Goal is to catch a monster 'Bow in Sushwap Lake....
  3. Gotta go with the foam Club Sandwich hopper...works on pretty much any water, fast or still... However, size & color do come into play like most other bug imitations. Tan & yellow, tan and orange, tan, gray & yellow, gray & yellow in sizes 8 - 10 - 12. I find they work even when most of the hoppers are darker in color...probably 'cause most have lighter bellies. Knotted back legs add to the realizm, and leave the legs a bit long for more aciton in the surface film. Used 'em in a fly swap at the fly club & rec'd calls from 3 guys who wanted the pattern 'cause they worked so well. Taiter
  4. Just saw the question.... altho I am another greybeard, this summer is my 10th anniversary with a FLY Rod. My first casting lesson was from the owner of the Upper Bow Fly fishing outfit...we did a corporate thing out at Chief Hector Lake in '97 and I caught a nice 'bow first cast.....I was hooked. Couldn't believe a fish would bite on a tiny little fly like we were using. Took to flyfishin for pike and walleye on the prairies with limited success. Moved to Calgary in '99 and spent my kid's inheritance outfitting for flyfishing and can't remember where my spinning gear is now!
  5. Hi Guys... I will be back in Ab for a few days next week, and wanted to head out to the Bullshead for a couple of days of fishin' those big bows there. Has anyone been out there lately and if so, what''s the fishing like....anything happening? Also, info on what they're bitting on would help so I can tie up some if I don't already have 'em on hand. Other than that, I guess I'll take some time to fish some of my favorite holes on the Bow. Hey, as long as the other half wants to work , I'll take the time for fishing. I have to say Lake fishing here in the Okanagan has been pretty damned good this year. We have over 100 fishable lakes within a 2 hr drive of Vernon. Not all produce big fish, but they do produce! Some of my favorites are the high altitude ones that are still cold at this time of year. Hoping to set up with couple of guys from the local fly fish club to do some Salmon fishing on the Shushwap River in Sept....man am I looking forward to that. Can only imagine what it will cost me in new gear tho! Maybe I can get by with my 8 wt. I must say I do miss the river fishing. When I lived in Calgary the Bow was so close I kinda took it for granted. Appreciate any info you can supply on the Bullshead. Thanks Bob
  6. The Fly Tyer magazine did an article with several patterns using fibres from those bright colored dusters....tried a couple for pike but only caught small mouth bass....got torn up pretty quick. As for dryer lint....forget it....way too absorbent. just get some wet and see what it looks like....and tough to work with. Yeah, I tried! Airedale underfur and guard hairs worked okay.....never did catch anything on 'em. Probably smelled like wet dog!!
