Anyone else watch the moguls tonight? This is my favorite Olympic discipline by far and It was great to watch Bilodeau beat the a-hole to take Canada's first gold at home. It was like shakespeare or something.

For those that don't know what I mean by a-hole... Dale Begg-Smith, the Australian who took the silver medal, actually grew up in Canada and was a member of the national freestyle team when he was younger. He left the team and Canada because his coaches didn't allow him enough time to pursue his business interests as well as his training. It sounds like a pretty dumb move on the part of the Canadian team until you find out that his "business" is actually distributing computer malware that causes those awful pop up ads you can't get rid of. Ever have your 8 year old get bombarded with porn ads while trying to use your computer? Blame him. Having spent my entire adult life in IT and much of that time cleaning up this kind of garbage, I can honestly say I'd crawl over broken glass just to kick this guy in the nuts.

No doubt the guy is a fantastically talented skier but anyone who saw the end of the race could tell he is a jerk by the way he was pouting after the race. To have Bilodeau win by defeating him was sublime.

Damn right I watched it!

Those dudes can FLY!

I remember last Olympics when Begg-Smith won the Gold in the moguls. Thought it was odd that a dude born and raised in Canada was skiing for the Aussie team. But at least now I know why.

I was super stoked that Bilodeau won with him pouting. That kid put up an AWESOME run.

After watching both the Women's and Men's mogul events, it looks like Canada will be just fine in the upcoming years.

OK, first off, I was pulling for Bilodeau. Hard. It was great to see you guys finally get a win on home soil with a fabulous performance. Exciting stuff, and the Aussie did look a bit whiny, to say the least.

Had the opportunity to watch the US version of the moguls as well. They showed Bilodeau's brother several times (human interest angle), and were certainly saying they thought Alex won. What I will say is that they talked about who won the competition (Bilodeau) and did not once mention the fact that the American got third. A pleasant change from normal US olympic coverage, which is usually about the US only. They were all about the winner in this case, and seemed very excited for him.

Now my rant. The CTV et al coverage is the most homer coverage I have ever seen anywhere I've ever been. It is pretty brutal. Watched the snowboarding today. You would have thought there was only one medalists, the Canadian who got silver. The comeback by the American was spectacular. But all the talk was about the silver (obviously a huge accomplishment, but shouldn't some acknowledgment be given to the winner?) Same thing when I watched the women's 3000 speed skating. All the talk about Groves in third, not much about the dominant skate by the Czech lady. You could hear them shout with glee when the last skater ended up fourth giving Groves the bronze.

It really used to be that the Canadian coverage was very balanced. Maybe too balanced. But it was a true pleasure to watch Canadian Olympic coverage as you would hear stories about athletes all over the world. It was such a nice change from the myopically focused US coverage. Unfortunately, Canadian broadcasting seems to have emulated the US coverage. Too bad. It was way better before.

And before everyone jumps all over me, I tend to pull for the Canadian athletes in these things. As I said, I was glad to see Alex get the gold in moguls and really enjoyed watching the snowboard cross (and was pulling for the Canadian there as well). But I would like to see the coverage be a little more about the event.

Edit: And of all the events, I really, really hope Wotherspoon wins his gold.

Rick keep it on NBC and you'll be fine ;) I think since this one is at home that balance is gone for now but I still think they are doing a great job informing us on all of the other athletes. And at one time in my life I did like Bob Costas but now I find him impossible to watch.

I agree, I'm not impressed with what CTV is doing at all. Say whatever you might about the CBC but their sports coverage was always top notch.

General Oly thoughts and observations:

- the CTV consortium is wide spread and offers plenty of viewing ( even watched a hockey game with an aboriginal dialect play by play) but mixing the talking heads from TSN, Sportsnet and Brian Williams and Lloyd has made for some interesting moments...did you see Darren Dutyschyn cut in to the Bilodeau family interview with the Champagne?..Hilarious..Williams was stunned as DD poured the bubbly to give to Fredric Bilodeau ( first taste of alcohol), the sister ( possibly underage but she threw it back like a shooter pro) and then forgot a glass for Brian Williams

- I have been to a lot of downhill races but have never seen as many spectacular crashes as yesterday in the women's race..and even more impressive is that the swede Anja Paerson got up and raced today after she flew and landed like eddie the eagle

- can you imagine spending upwards of $100 or more for a ticket to an 18-0 women's hockey game? Should be like curling...shake hands when you have had enough of a beating..

- what is with all the VANOC glitches...was 7 years not enough time to think and test all this stuff thru? The weather cannot be helped ( remember the delays in '88?). But three ice cleaning machines and none of them work right?...

-BIG BIG hockey game on Sunday
