What are you using for the connecting wire bigdirty? It looks stiffer than fireline

I am looking to start tying up some bigger, articulated streamers, mainly for the Bow. I am wondering what some opinions are on hook sizes and shank lengths are. I was looking at some patterns which call for up to a 2/0 Gamakatsu B10S, and a size 1 saltwater hook for the trailer. These seem like awfully large hooks to put into a trout. I was thinking of going with longer shanked, 3-4x long streamer hooks in sizes 2-6 or so, which will still give me the length without the massive gape. I have never fished articulated streamers before, let alone tried to tie one, so I was also wondering about the pros and cons of using just a shank for the front part of the fly vs a hook, and anything else that might help

I will be there as much as I can manage, great place to learn and try new things for me. Does anyone know if there is a cheaper way to go for all three days than paying the $15 a day at the door?

Those are some long legs, how do the fish like them compared to the shorter ones?

Here is what I finally ended up going with, just had to wait for the right desk to show up on Kijiji. Does anyone have an extra pedestal base for a vise, or know where I can pick one up? The c-clamp doesn't quite work with the desk the way I planned.

I had loads of space on the old one, just won't get that this time. I have been thinking a portable station with a separate storage area may be a good way to go now

How do these work once there is not enough dubbing left to reach the top?

I would love to be able to design and build my own bench, I just don't have the room or all of the tools I need at home to make one. Do you have any pictures/ plans of ones you have made?

I recently moved, and had to get rid of my old desk that I had my tying stuff set up at because it was too big for the new place. I have been trying to replace it for a couple weeks now, but I am struggling to find something that I think will work. I only have about a 4' wide space to work with, so I am a little bit limited. I've looked at a few "post your tying bench" threads, but am curious as to what features are really useful, and things I should look for. Kijiji can be tough without seeing things in person sometimes

Maybe you just need to adapt and adjust to what the river is giving you. It was my first year fly fishing last year and when I would finally put it together for bits at a time, I would get some kind of action. Figures though, coming from a soccer fan.......

I'm looking to get my flies ready to go for the next few months, and I'm trying to figure out what to stock up on. Will a standard Adams/ Parachute Adams work as well as more specific mayfly patterns for most places? Should I worry about emergers and spinners?

I bought a #3 Metz Brown/Grizzly combo neck last week, and I have a question about it. This is my first dry fly hackle, and I noticed that the brown has a fair number of weathers with black web down the middle. Are these feathers still useful for dry flies? It is mostly less than 1/3-1/4 of the length of the barbs, but it seems to look like more just from the colour contrast. Also, does anyone have any good uses for the patch of webby feathers attached to the side?

I have something to add to this question that i've been thinking about lately. When the size of a fly is referred to as 12-18 or something along those lines, does this mean a size 12-18 standard hook? Would this still be the same if you were using a bead head, or would you use a size 12-18 1x or 2x long shank hook in this case? I have a bunch of different styles of hooks that I am doing nymphs with right now, and some of the size 12s have a shorter shank than some size 16s.

I was thinking lately, with all of the different variations of shank length on hooks, ie. 1x short, 3x long, would it not make sense to tie all of your flies on the shortest shanked hook you could get away with, as long as the wire isn't too thick? This way you get the biggest hook gap for the shank length. I've heard of this a few times, but it makes me wonder why you would use say a 3x long hook, unless you are getting into the bigger sizes where you don't want a huge hook gap so it's not as harmful to the fish. What does everyone else think?

I'm probably going to come up with something more creative, but I was tying these anyways and realized they only have two materials, Orange floss and partridge.

I had originally tied one without the shell back, but I didn't like the way the woven black wire looked over the back. It's really hard to do it justice with the iPhone camera pictures.

I would for sure be interested. Still pretty new to tying but seems like a cool way to learn about different materials and methods.

Olive bodied, soft hackle hares ear, with a peacock abdomen, flashback, and a red hot spot. Might be a little overkill but they look pretty cool.
