This x1000 I take poaching really personally. They aren't just breaking the rules, they are ruining the experience for the rest of us.

Join Bow River Trout - Support The Bow River Fishery
jpinkster replied to fishteck's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
A fair response, but that doesn't line up with your original comment. Fish habitat work is just as much (or probably more) about supporting a strong fishery than advocating for boat launches. Our "claim" to support the Bow River fishery is backed up by our list of achievements. I'd advise being more deliberate in your communications as not to alienate other groups that are doing great work. -

Peter, I congratulate you on all of your work - you and I have worked together on these initiatives over the last year and your drive and passion is making a lot of this possible. With that being said, I take a lot of offense to this comment in particular. The Bow River Chapter of TUC has been incredible active over the last number of years. Some of our projects over the last while include: Fish Creek Rainbow Trout Redd Surveys Bow River Brown Trout Redd Surveys Habitat projects on Legacy Island Habitat projects around Bridge 9 in Fish Creek Park Various levels of advocacy and feedback through The City of Calgary, AEP, DFO, etc That's just to name a few. This isn't a zero-sum game. It is entirely possible for various organizations to compliment each other's work to further our collective interest in the river. The comment I have quoted is entirely unhelpful. -
My Encounter With A Conservation Officer

I have had great experiences with the COs (one named Jordan in particular) out at Crawling Valley, even when they've busted me for having a beer in the boat. I got busted in June two years ago and was issued a warning. They had us dump out the cans and took the empties. I got a call from the CO about 4 months later, he mentioned that he actually wasn't allowed to seize the cans and wanted to know if I wanted them back. I told him to give them to the Girl Scouts or put them in the recycling. I ran into him again the next year (no beer this time, lesson learned) and we had a good laugh about the whole thing. Really glad to hear that CVR fished well. C&R only should do that lake well. -
Any and all details help. What they are wearing, what gear the had, make and model of a car. The response times can really vary, especially in Calgary. I've had officers on the scene in 15 minutes and I've had the operator tell me that they can't get someone out there for a few hours.

Wild Rose Release Plan For Ab Fisheries

I'm sure what they really mean is that we can now walk across private land to get to fishing spots. Rural Alberta is gonna love that. -
Wild Rose Release Plan For Ab Fisheries
jpinkster replied to jpinkster's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
The whole priority here seems to be about stuffing more meat into a freezer, not building stronger fisheries. -
Hot off the presses folks -what do you think? I applaud them for putting some policy forward, but there are aspects of this that make me uncomfortable. Predator control is a dangerous road to go down - that's the type of attitude that encourages folks to throw bull trout into the bushes. I also see nothing in here about the impact land use has on our fisheries. Can't have strong fisheries without strong land use policy. http://www.wildrose.ca/removing_barriers_and_improving_stewardship_wildrose_releases_plan_for_alberta_fisheries

More Cases Of Whirling Disease Found
jpinkster replied to fishjunkie's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
All speculation of course, but most signs point to it coming to our systems between 2000-present. The government was still testing for WD up until about 2001. -
Let's just hope some of the yahoos stay away while the ground is still soft. Ripping up that road over the next few weeks would put any grading done to waste.

If we hadn't gotten all of that rain in July we would have been in a lot of trouble. -

Point taken. The hoe was actively working on Sunday afternoon when I got off the water. -

They are doing flood mitigation work (more rip-rap, yay!). They aren't able to do in-stream work without Water Act approval, so it's gone through the appropriate channels. Whether it's good for the river or how effective rip-rap actually might be is an entirely different conversation... -
I had the opportunity to walk this side channel with the project team last week. I'm looking forward to seeing this completed! http://www.shanekeating.ca/2017/03/30/qp-river/

Brian Jean Suggests Ohv Status Quo Is Fine
jpinkster replied to jpinkster's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Based off objective political analysis. I don't disagree that many changes have been for the better and it will probably take multiple terms to institutionalize some of these changes. That doesn't mean it's going to happen. -
Brian Jean Suggests Ohv Status Quo Is Fine
jpinkster replied to jpinkster's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I think you'd have to be pretty naive to think the NDP will secure a second term. I'm planning on doing what I can to shift the conversation within conservative circles to a place where better stewardship is a point of priority. -
I'll have the wife with me, so it'll likely be some pretty casual stop and go fishing. I'm not looking to poach anyone's honey holes, but I'd appreciate any guidance on where I should focus my efforts. If you can help please send me a private message - no need to air this laundry in public

Brian Jean Suggests Ohv Status Quo Is Fine
jpinkster replied to jpinkster's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
^ What this socialist scum said. Jason Kenney has started the process of unifying the two right of centre parties. I've had some great conversations with Jason about this topic and he's more interested in a thoughtful approach on this issue. Brian seems more interested in parroting what OHV groups tell him to say. There are going to be lots of opportunities for conservatives to make their mark on this issue - let's just hope the mark is a positive one. -
I'm headed up to Jasper with the wife in May. I've never been up there before, hoping to find a few places to get a line in the water.

Whirling Disease Info Session @ U Of C
jpinkster replied to fishinhogdaddy's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
That's not the case at all. We sure seem to have lots and lots of recreational biologists that have this entire thing figured out. Habitat here is very different from habitat in the south. There are any number of factors that could make things worse or better here : we may have a smaller concentration of tubefix worms, we may have a more resistant strain of trout - who knows? There are simply too many factors for us to know for sure. -

I agree with the final sentence, but I really worry about the first point. We need to be careful about making definitive statements that are impossible to verify (unless of course you are the POTUS). We don't know if it's been around for a long time, and we likely won't ever find out. -
Latest update - http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/husky-spill-bragg-creek-cox-creek-crude-oil-1.4037469 25K L. Sounds like clean up should be done in a few days, remediation comes next.
