  1. Hello Western Canada, The youth team needs your help!!! Were trying to get to the 8th YWFFC in the east Bohemian region of the Czech republic this summer. The competition dates are from the 21st of july to the 27th. Our team member are: Colin Huff from Chelsea, Quebec David Nonomura from Missasauga, Ontario Michael Lennox Ottawa, Ontario John Bransfield(Captain) Calgary, Alberta Simon Wells Ottawa, Ontario Bob Sheedy(Coach) Manitoba Jack Simpson(Manager) Cobourg, Ontario So heres the deal we need to raise funds for food, transportation, equipment, and a place to stay. Fly Fishing Canada is graciously looking after our competition registration but costs are still pretty expensive. We each need to raise about 2500 dollars for our flights and costs mentioned previously. So I am offering a day of one on one instruction with YOU to show you the fine art of Czech Nymphing(my specialty) and learn to fish small rivers like you never had before. Im looking to sell tickets to raffle off for a day with myself, I will draw one random name and which entails day with me on a mountain stream or spring creek your choice after runoff. If I get enough people buying tickets I will draw a second name, but this is dependent upon the number of people. The draw will be on May 15 , tickets will be $25, this is resonable as I usually charge $150 per person in my clinics. My clinics always have me teaching 5 people at a time so this is a great deal. I will bring a glorious lunch of my specialty chicken sandwiches on french bread, your choice a brew or two with lunch or soft drinks I will be teaching you: -Czech and Polish Nymphing -Leader setup for recreational use of the two -Properly weighted three-fly systems without using splitshot or swivels -The importance of stealth using this short-line method -Strike detection without and indicator -How to read and fish water effectively using the short line methods I will provide: -Flies -Lunch -Rods and reels specifically for Czech and Polish Nymping -A grand day on the water of Laughs and Learning So if you wish to purchase a ticket post so and send 25 dollars to 4693 20th street sw, Calgary, Alberta T2T 6G4 On a second note we are looking for someone with web-design skills to help us create a website If you are capable and willing to donate your time to help us with this please PM me. In return I would gladly take you out on the water for a day and show you a few tricks. If you would like to find out more about us fly fishing canada website has a little bit but its a bit outdated www.flyfishingcanada.net or pick up a copy of the Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine it has an article on our recent successes at the 2008 Canadian National Fly Fishing Championships last fall. If you would simply like to Donate money to the team you can Contact me through the board, or even someone at FFC through there website. ALL proceeds will be compiled to subsidize the total cost for the all of the youth team members not just myself. Thanks everyone John Bransfield Captain of the Canadian National Youth Fly Fishing Team
  2. regardless of whether global warming is fact or fiction I think we could all do with less automobiles on the road creating smog.....
  3. yeah dude i fish a 30 foot leader, with a blood knot a good 9 feetish from my point fly and never have any trouble no matter the size of the fish. Just dab a little UV knot sense on there and it'll run through nicely.
  4. Looking forward to travels this year. Sanibel island for reds, snook, and sea trout in easter. In june im gonna go to parkland Manitoba and do a camping trip sheedy and finally chase tigers and those big parkland trout i have heard so much about . Gonna spend some time on our spring creeks shaping up for youths. The off to the czech to east bohemia to fish for euro grayling, browns and bows. Then hopefully make a pit stop in on the eastcoast enroute back to calgary, for a couple days on the mighty Marimachi chasing silver. In august plans are to have my close friend and teammate mikey come out after the czech to do euro nymphing clinics with me around the province and into BC. Then we'll see were i get accepted as to what the fall will bring for angling adventures. Looking forward to this season just as much at the last!!!
  5. I think max was refering to using spey being a little unsensitive and heavy for highsticking, but you are correct, on streams its long. My competition and recreation arson consists of 10' 3wt and 4wt, and we got some new 11' 5wts in the works too for the river side soft and supply tip for strike detection. On the loch portion its all about the 10' 7wts, pretty much standard, you'll find any distance single handed rods have a 10' 7wt in the mix for that purpose.
  6. I put a team in in the past one with the rest of the youth team, simply get a team of five guys toegeather, apply and send in your entrance fee and your good to go. edit- more info can be found at http://www.flyfishingcanada.net/
  7. Dude thats sooo flippin sweet, so jealous. gotta get to pat some day
  8. Alright then how about you throw your hat in the ring, sounds like your pretty optimistic your grandma would win, so it should be a piece of cake for you. Go for it try your luck against canada's competition anglers!!! I have to ask you, whats wrong with a venue with lots of dumb fish, would you prefer a venue with small numbers of difficult fish? When you get a venue like that its too easy for people to blame things like bad beats for their lack of skill. This way people can't blame anyone but themselves, and trust me its alot more fun catching 15 fish in a session, compaired to one. FFC's goal is to make these events fun as possible. Even if you don't win im sure you'll have a good time, fernie area is pretty fun, there should be some big numbers pulled out of these venues. Although there is usually atleast one tricky venue in each competition. Thekingfisher, you are allowed five people per team, one fo which is captain. If you choose to bring a spare then you are allowed to have 6 anglers to a team, but only five who can fish at one time, if someone isn't performing as you would like you can "sub in" a spare for a session.
  9. I suggest any of you who have any desire to go, do it! Its a great time, competitions will improve you ten-fold, not to mention how much fun it is. This ones close too so no excuses.
  10. Just a quick question, where in the orignal post does it say this guy was a sport hunter?? How do you know he didn't eat all of the meat? Don't agree with hunting grizz for sport but wont ever come down on someone for killing one for the table. Nice bear.
  11. no man technical casting rod, tcx should be a more fishing frindly rod, or so they have told me.... well see might pick one up in january...
  12. I have the 10' 4wt streamflex and am picking up the 10' 3wt soon, as well as the 10' 7wt g-tec, there awsome rods. Highly recomend them to anybody, i use the streamflexes for euro nymphing and the g-tec will be for fishing loch style. I think there the best value on the market at the moment, the 10' 8wt is an awsome salmon rod, lots of people on the island have them for beach fishing. The only thing i don't like about them is the time waiting to get warranty repairs as they have to go back to the uk i think.
  13. There is plenty of "public water" on the marimachi, quarryville being the most well known. Its a war zone, but if the fish are runnign its not a bad place to be. Lots of others to explore, just ask around WW Doaks and some other shops up there and they should point you in the right direction.
  14. yeah, when the nationals have been in bc they adjusted to the provincial regs, but any world championships always allow three flies as per fips-mouche rules. its my understanding that the one fly rule in bc is to protect the salmon, i guess the ideal regs would be to classify the salmon water as one fly only and let the rest of the trout fishery be three flies, similar to what the regulations in nova scotia, and quebec are.
  15. Just so you know the fips-mouche rules allow you to have three flies fish with no lead beads, but tungsten copper ect, under 4mm. So nymphs dries, streamers are all fair game. and no exposed weight, ie copper johns, you can have ribing but the wire cannot over lap. fips-mouche is the world fly fishing championships organization and the rules that all countries national championships follow aswell as the world championships. No indicators either, just sections of coloured mono is all most of us use.
  16. Thanks for the congrats, we had a great time thats for sure. Hahah i met randy he was in my group, I shared my frist beat on the river with him,I never heard anything about a 40 inch trout! Hes a funny guy though, I look forward to fishing with him in the future. Hahah i don't know about dutch but definatly a rasta, i want his sweater with the jamaican colours haha.
  17. Got back sunday night from Mont-Tremblant Quebec, where the 6th national fly fishing championships were held. We entered a youth team in the senior's event. I was fishing captain of our national youth team which this year which was comprimised of myself, Mike Lennox from ottawa, simon wells from ottawa, david nonmura from missasauga, and our newest member Colin Huff from chealsy quebec, coached by bob sheedy. We went into the competition with the goal of a team top five finish, and well we won the canadian section of the event, coming seconde to Team USA in the combined results. We had three top ten finished Mike lennox one the individual competition in 1st place, simon wells in seconde, and myself in 8th. The competition was absolutly awsome, it was run without a hitch, the diable river and lakes of club baroux provided us with many double digit sessions. The diable provided from some trecherouse wading, put it was a blast, alot of the time during my competition session if the wading was too tough to get to the controller i would kick my feet up and float down. My sessions on the diable were definatly two of my favorite competition sessions to date. There were three lakes in the competition which were all fished loch style, as fips-mouche rules( no anchor, or indicator) It was a blast, between tying flies with ian colin james, and getting on water time with bob sheedy, terrence courtoreille, and randy taylor. Meeting people from bc and quebec, and sitting next to the american team at the banqoute. We meet alot of great people, learned heaps more and as an added bonus came away with a medal. It was a complete team effort, and i can't say enough about how the whole team did, each one of us won at least one of your sessions which, and no blanks in our last session contributed to our victory. We have a great team and we'll be shooting sky high at 2009 youth worlds. Full results from the competition can be found here: http://www.moucheursendiables.com/ensemble.../nouvelles.html There will be full reports from our youth team posted on the fly fishing canada website in the near future, i'll post them here when they're up. Anyways it was a great time, thought id share, and if you get the opourtunity to go to a competition hop on it. heres a picture of the team at the award ceremony: from left to right its David nonomura, Mike Lennox, Simon Wells, Myself, and Colin Huff
  18. Thanks Brunsie it was a team effort from day one and we came out on top. It was a pretty stiff competition with USA's finest and of course Equipe airflo and double hauls had us untill the last session, we had no blanks and two first places in our group which made us seconde in the competition and first in canada. When full results come out i'll post them here.
  19. Want to buy a 9 and a half or 10 foot 7 weight for loch style, and have the opourtunity to get the sage z-axis or tcr at a killer price. Anyone know if any shops have either of these rods in stock. I want to test cast them before I choose and was wondering if shop has either of these rods in stock. thanks John
