I've watched a few videos on fly-fishing in New Zealand and it seems as if all the trout they catch are huge (like all over 20 inches). I don't know if this is just the fishermen or something but what makes New Zealand trout so big? I understand that there are lower population numbers and it could be explained by abundant bug life but I've seen videos where the water doesn’t look that fertile. Even if it's caused by unusual numbers of bugs why don't rich American spring creeks like Armstrong have as big of fish?

Which Species Of Trout Fights The Hardest?

Rainbows for sure. -
Ah, but fools seldom differ

Wow looks like you had a great trip ! I would really like to do a tour of Montana’s trout streams some time. As a side note remember to wash your wading boots in a mild bleach water solution to kill whirling disease and other aquatic diseases before getting into the river. Sorry not trying to be interfering or anything but I'd hate to see Alberta infected with WD! Did you find the fishing more technical than the Bow or about the same? As far as pressure wise were there more or less fisherman than the Bow?

Who cares they slit it open... I think the most productive thing would be to post suggestive comments that point out their errors in fish handling. I have a feeling rather than stopping what their doing they just wouldn’t take as many pictures and video's of it.

Crossed the Highwood at 5:30 in Longview. Running extremely dirty and high, not fishable with maybe 2-6 inches of vis.

Guys remember to PLEASE wash your waders and wading boots after coming back soak wading boats in mild bleach solution for a couple of hours to kill Whirling Disease. I'm sure you two-wouldn’t want to be the ones to bring that terrible disease into Alberta. Thanks Have a great trip!

I've had ATV's drive right upstream of a section of water that I'm trying to fish... This clogs the streambed with silt and mud and ruins fish habitat. Countless other ATV activities destroy the environment in some fragile areas, not to mention the mess the people leave behind. If you use an ATV responsibly good for you, your one of the few who does. In my opinion there is no place for irresponsible ATV use in Alberta.

Montanan streams are apparently REALLY really crowded. Thank goodness we don't get the press their streams do or we'd be charging people $100 a rod a day like on Armstrong. Things in Alberta are becoming more crowded but at least we don't get a cover story about every second stream in this province. Don't get me wrong I like Montana it's just to busy for me.

Cataracts nice but the upper section has been clear cut and there’s lots of rednecks with multiple trucks quads not to mention baited barbed treble hooks… LOL it's ok but get away from the trails if you want a chance in getting a brookie.
-
+ it would encourage members to show up cause they have a chance of winning a rod & real combo. Another good idea would be to have 50% of your score on how many lbs of junk you get and the other 50% on how many inches your biggest fish is.

It's a real shame what they did with the Oldman Dam. Not only did it affect the flooded river but the crow from the falls down. I have never fished the lower Oldman (the stretch a few miles before it reaches the reservoir), is there the same problem with silt too?
-
Hmmm, did you find it was harder to catch fish where there was more silt? Because technically fish spawn further up where the silt problems are better or non-existent so it isn’t effecting most spawning.
-
How about who can take the nicest photograph of a fish they caught from this year. It wouldn’t be about size of fish but about quality and composition of the photograph, everyone gets one entry and there is a poll or something... Don's idea about conservation is good too.

Great post thanks, there is lots of construction in the pass so maybe that's the casue, if so it likley won't improve it may even get worse... So after run-off there is more or less silt in the streambed?
-
I was fishing the lower crow the other day and noticed that there was lots and lots of silt covering most of the river. I am sure this large amount of silt cannot be good for any river as it’s not good for spawning trout. It could even it could harbor a concentrated and deadly population of whirling disease. I read in an old post on FFA about the Oldman river dam having something to do with the large amount of silt in the lower crow, but how could a dam effect that? Is this a similar problem on the lower Oldman and Castle? The Oldman dam was such a terrible waste of what sounded like three amazing trout streams the government should take action to improve the amount of silt (I have no clue how this could be done) in the lower river(s).

Wow it's amazing how huge the plant is the truck is even bigger, I bet it get really good fuel economy though I wonder how many fly fishermen make their living from oil and gas? I'd bet that almost half of the people on the board make their living from oil. Part of me really doesn’t like the big oil boom in Alberta, as it's the main drive for development and habitat degradation in many ecosystems. A larger more prosperous population means more mansions, acreages, summer homes, cabins, estates, resorts and just way more fishermen... Add to that the need for all the wood for those people’s homes and the people who move here's homes and it's not a bright outlook on Alberta’s fisheries. O well I guess we will have to live with it, as there is no indication that Alberta will stop booming anytime soon. That’s for the pics MTB it’s always interesting to see what’s happening up north.

Bow's a complete flood/run-off mode. There was so much water rushing to the storm drains from a hill that storm drain plates where actually shooting water in the air 1-2 feet high. Point being that the bow had HUGE amounts of street water rushing into it, so it may recover in a few days to a week providing no more monsoons.
-
Thinking about getting a sage launch, as they’re cheap (relatively speaking) and are apparently nice rods. How do you guys like them?
-
For rivers like the bow I always use at least one split shot, if your not hanging up on bottom every few casts your to shallow.
-
Good job, it's great to hear that they were caught!

What flies would you suggest for when they aren’t rising?

I have been fishing the bow in the inner city stretch the last couple days with no luck, not even a whitefish. I am a capable fly fisherman and I have no trouble catching fish on the lower bow but I just can't seem to catch a fish on the inner city stretch. I have fished it in the evening and after dark with no avail. I have tried many nymphs and streamers with a variety of methods and locations. Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful. Thanks
