  1. O grow up yourself. Don't like this site then go somewhere else smart ass.
  2. I'm going to utilize the immense body of knowledge on this board again. Just a quick question, I use to have a finger trap type thing between the leader and fly line and it broke (thank god I didn’t have a fish on). So I decided to tie a loop (like a leader loop) into my fly line so I can make the loop to loop connection quickly. Is this ok? Or is it bad for my fly line or the energy transfer between line and leader? (It's a pretty small un-bulky knot) Thanks to all those who answer (It would be nice to know soon as I'm heading out early tomorrow)
  3. I have to say that what Brent has to say has a point. On the old FFC board I moved from FFA because it got shut down. So I introduced myself here and I got humiliated with what I said on the FFA board by a particular someone. My post in defense was then deleted and then before anyone realized I objected the thread disappeared. This made me a little frustrated, but I figured that the guy was a good (he is) and I ignored it. Sorry to bring this up but I felt that this little injustice might be added to this pointless, rambling thread
  4. Great job getting that garbage I sometimes fish that area too (I think so at least) and always manage a Safeway bag full... Wish I could of made it to the Bow river clean up but it just didn’t work. O well next time, I almost always pick up trash anyway. Sounds like another nice day on the Wood!
  5. Wow! That picture of the moose crossing the river is so cool! Beautiful photography!
  6. Sorry about that Rick. I had no intention to offend you but since when was freedom of speech so frowned upon? I have strong opinion, maybe even wrong ones as I'm not all knowing and like many others on this board simply gave my 2 cents. Some of the things I said in that post where warped and looking back on it a tad bit strong... I will refrain from making opinionative posts in the future for my own safety I sincerely hope you re not thinking homicidal thoughts towards me as "attack the person" is just a tad bit creepy.
  7. I think it’s an out rage that we let the oil companies rape and pillage our province destroying it’s natural beauty and causing sever stress on our community and we get NOTHING for it. Oil companies are making HUGE profits and we still have one of the worst under funded school systems in Canada. Not to mention our parks, or public campground and hospitals. If anything big oil should be paying to make this province a better one while in fact there making it worse. The damage they have done will be a scar for ever and a reminder of what happened when we let money get to our heads and a let bunch of foreigners steal a piece of the pie and leave. Our province will be left poor, and miserable with no oil or real sustainable industry. And the initial occupants will be left to clean up after the hordes that took their money and left.
  8. I'd personally suggest the sheep as it's (in my experience) a little less crowded than the Highwood can be on weekends. I've had some days on the Highwood that are really, really busy... If you’re trying to get a little solitude I'd recommend exploring a bit in the upper reaches. Good luck J
  9. Wow that’s a big ass cutty! The quality of the photography on this forum is simply amazing, and improving! I am slightly worried about that area as it's getting tons more pressure then it used to get... Every report of poor fishing make me a little concerned as I have personally have found that you know have to get quite always of the beaten path (which is harder to do in that area) in order to have good fishing (like it was 5-6 years ago). Another concern is the amount of garbage I find in the gap, common people how could you litter in a place that pretty! Sorry for the hijack!
  10. Your lack of success was likely do to the bright and clear conditions. Some days on the bow you will get one of those scorchers that simply means poor fishing. In those crystal clear conditions fish sit at the bottom of the pools super paranoid and spooky, especially in fall. Sunny cloudy or cloudy days are my favorite especially while the water is still a tad off colored. Makes for some great fishin!
  11. Heading to a mountain lake this weekend what flies should I bring and how should I rig them up? I'm not a big lake guy so make sure to state the obvious, I assume you just cast it out there with a indy or a dry fly let it sink and strike when you see action... Not sure though. Are streamers useful for mountain lakes or should nymphs be good? Thanks
  12. Great thanks so much everyone. I really appreciate the advice and I think we will experiment with a hopper dropper rig and if all else fails just standard nymphing. I will report on how it goes. Thanks again!
  13. I heard that the standard deep nymphing with a couple split shots, a SJW and a big corkie isn’t as productive in the fall. Is that true? I think I'll start out with that fore sure but are there any other productive nymphing methods around this time of year that would be good to have up my sleeve? Thanks a bunch for the response; I really appreciate all the experienced advice on this forum.
  14. Unfortunately I have fished the Bow very little this year as I have been on holidays/busy for most of the summer. I am thinking of taking a newbie out who has had very little success and really want him to catch some fish, due to the fact I rarely fish the Bow, and have only fished it a couple times this year I am a little worried that we won't catch fish. I know the Bow is a tuff river for a beginner but this is one of the only times/places it'll work out so it'll have to do. Therefore I'm wondering what techniques would work well for this time of the year, I'm not a big "matching the hatch" guy so I doubt we will be fishing drys although if the opportunity presents itself we will. Usually I wouldn’t ask what to use on the bow as a BASJW and a bead head dropper catches enough fish to keep me happy, but I've heard that this technique doest work as well in the late summer/fall. What water should we fish and with what set up, technique and flies to have a successful day on the bow (for me more than one fish to hand) I am a fairly accomplished fly-fisher but not a big frequenter of the Bow so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
  15. I don’t know SJW... I recall you posting something about your Sage Fli being a horrible rod + I've heard that the Fli's aren’t that great from other people too. Sorry!
  16. What model of sage is it? I'm planning to pick up a sage launch but I wasn’t sure what sort of reel I should use. I've done quite a bit of research on the launch and most people seem to like it, the Fli on the other hand is apparently not a great rod... If anyone owns a sage launch could they post how they like it? Thanks for all of the responses I'm thinking of a SA reel.
  17. Thanks TM. Does anyone know about scientific anglers reels? They seem fairly light (relatively speaking) and they advertise as being basic and durable. I wouldn’t know because I don’t own one or know anyone who does. Would most fly shops in Calgary carry these?

    New Reel

I'm looking to buy a new fly-fishing reel for a 5wt rod; I will occasionally use the reel on the bow but mostly on smaller rivers. I'm a bit cheep and all I want is a light reliable reel that has decent drag... I was originally considering the orvis battenkill barstock reel but I decided against it as it's a bit pricey ($100 +) and country pleasures is the only store that carries orvis (I have nothing against country pleasures I just I can't make it there before it closes). What's a good reliable reel that's light for under a $100? Thanks
  19. (rickr) That kind of reminds me of what people use to say about black people that they "could not feel pain" or that certain races couldn’t feel or think like we do... I'm not comparing people to fish though and I don't think fish can "feel" at the same level or intensity is human beings, however it is pretty ignorant to proclaim they do not feel pain, every animal feels pain and have a "fear" of death or else not much would exist. It is life’s ability to avoid death (or try to), which keeps things going. If you do not believe fish can feel next time you catch one stick a needle in it and watch it squirm, you cannot tell me it does not feel at least some form of pain... (by the way I could never do that!) I do not have a problem killing a fish as long is it's humane, and sustainable that being said I hardly ever keep fish because few streams are at there true carrying capacity and most streams are better of with the fish in them than out.
  20. WOW that brown is MASSIVE TM! Great shots both of you, keep them coming!
  21. Just wondering if anyone would be interested in posting photo's of there favorite fish shots, and at the end we could all vote (is there a poll feature?) on the top photo (no prize) for the title of best fish picture. Remember this is not a competition for the biggest or even the most beautiful fish, just the best shot of a fish. (Although size and looks help!) For courtesy sake could anyone wanting to remove a picture should consult the owner before doing so. Personally I have been very lucky to have a fishing partner who takes great shots so I cannot claim skills for the photography but rather for the fish. Will be interested to see what pics you guys post!
