  1. As a "new" fly fisher you haven't yet learned that posting your favorite Alberta spring creeks results in many other "new" fly fishers showing up resulting in your favorite rivers becoming increasingly more busy. When I see a new members (2 posts) ask for information about my favorite spring creeks, which I have spent years of leg work, reading, money, blood, sweat and tears to explore, I get a little defensive. One of the greatest feelings that I experience as a fly fisher is the self discovery of new waters. Don't deny yourself this. Get some books, get familiar with Google maps, make a commitment and start your adventure.

    Very true :P

never give out the "secret" spots.

  2. Ok, some people here might think im crazy. :P

I don't have too much luck at that place from above picture.

If you really want white fish... go fish near the railroad bridge runs through bowness and bowness park. Have to fish it deep. The best time of year I found is from March to April and late season. For trouts, pretty much everywhere in bowmont park is fish-able.

  3. quote from their website:

    =======================

    About Tenkara

Tenkara is the traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing where only a rod, line and fly are used.

    I think they actually mean

    About Tenkara

Tenkara is the traditional Japanese method of bait-fishing where only a rod, line and bait are used.

I remember there is an episode from extreme fishing with robson green talks about this method of fishing.

In that episode, the japanese dude hook a live bait fish with tenkara rod and let the live bait fish go to the place where other fish holding. basically, use fish to catch fish.

people dress up in dry suit and carry a bucket of live fish, and catches the fish around 4" big. pretty lame.

  4. I am looking at purchasing some wading pants. I have full chest waders already and I only use them when I really need to (winter).

The idea of wading pants is appealing for me because I fish mainly mountain streams spring creeks.

Don't know many brands that have waders in a pants style. I know Orvis and Simms does

Any thoughts on these brands or any others out there. What is better and why.

    Thanks for the insight.

I was in the same situation. I was hunting for a waist high wader because 1) I seldom wade in deeper than waist 2) more convenient.

I know fish tales has dan baily waist wader, wholesales has some?, fishin hole/bass pro has the simms g3 convert, and bass pro has white river waist high wader.

dan baily looks and feels cheap.

saw wholesales web site has this http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/f...prod256879.html, but i can never find one in store. It looks good, especially with the front zipped pockets.

not gonna buy a white river product again, they are not that durable.

In the end, I pick up the simms g3 convert. No particular reason, because that's the only one of the two waist high waders I can find, and the quality is ok (also got a nice deal). In this year, I only pulled up the wader once to warm my hand. I don't see myself buying a chest high wader again.

    Hope this help.

  5. First, what are you going to use the rod for? Swinging streamers for trout on the Bow? Steelhead? That will influence the length and weight of rod you should look at. There are good deals to be found in the trading post, but you can also get some good quality new rods at a decent price - Amundson, TFO, Echo, and Beulah I think. Whether you go new or used, make sure to try it out first.

X2 try out first. Spey rods are all very different, and they cost ALOT!

Maybe before you even buy a spey rod, just get a casting instructor for a lesson. He/she can provide rod/reel/line, and you will know whether or not this is for you.

  6. Dumb question maybe... I know the river is closed in the NW, but would like to practice my spey casting on a river. I live in the NW close by the river and don't want to drive to FC/above bearspaw to practice if I don't have to. I am sure it is frowned upon but would it be legal to just have no fly on the leader and just casting? I would bring my license but no flies or anything like that, legal or not allowed?

i believe closed means no line in the water, so u will still get busted if someone call in.

  7. people are just crazy...

happened to me once, three guy (2 adults/1 kid)came in like 15' beside me without even asking me.

me: hey, I will cover all this water.

adult A talked to his kid: when I was young my dad always told me: there is always spot for the others.

then all of them start to casting 15' beside me.

I was like WTF? you didn't even ask, and now talking *hit. GOOD, be like that, but if I had kids, I would teach them: never jumping to other people's spot without even asking.

  8. I had cheap pair of white river wading boot for a year of fishing, it's done. The felt is coming apart, laces braking, inner fabric wearing through.

I have been searching a new pair for a month now. The only thing I looking for is that I don't want felt bottom, because they got frozen up pretty badly in the snow. I went to many local fishing stores, haven't really find any boots I like. Simms, guideline, etc...

Then couple days ago, was talking to a guy. He has been fishing for a long time, he mentioned he does not buy wading boot no more. He just go to walmart and buy pair of boot for cheap and use for 2 years then throw away get new one.

A pair of cheap wading boot costs $100, and they last 1 year (at least for me). However, I can buy a good pair of Columbia hiking boot for $60.

Question: Why wading boots? Are they even necessary? Any problem using hiking boots instead of wading boots?

  9. One scene of the males chasing each other around from last fall to open this vid, otherwise here's some footage we put together from this last week out west. Funny, haven't had a rod in hand on these streams in 7 visits now. Just out for some vid. Oh, and it's much clearer hitting the HD button too.

    Cheers

    Dave & Amelia
