Built up static in the water. I was on crawling valley a month ago and heard the same thing. But my crackling was my rod and it zapped me pretty good. We proceeded to get the hell off the water. See when I go drunk power boating I usually only run into problems when loading the boat back on the trailer and driving home. I have ZERO sympathy for people who drink and drive.

Man, do it yourself. It's super easy. I bought new bearings at princess auto, put in some trailer buddies and voila. Done. It's seriously 10 mins per axle if your races aren't horribly stuck.
