  1. As we're in hopper season right now, I was wondering what you guys use for a hopper? I tend to use "hopper" as a general term, which can mean a Turk's Tarantula, stimmy, club sandwich, chernobyl ant, or a standard Letorts hopper. So what is your favourite hopper that you use? For me, it's the mighty Turk's Tarantula, for the Bow and other streams.
  2. All I know is that when I use the exact same flies as the guys I'm fishing with, I'll still catch twice as many fish, and I'll even let them choose which part of the pool to start at. As for the Bow, I have to credit the Hawg for my success there. After fishing with him for a day, I learned so many little things and my learning curve went straight up. He doesn't fish pretty, but he catches big fish like crazy!
  3. I generally tell them what I'm using if they're asking nicely. I figure they're asking for a reason (new to the water, new to flyfishing, etc.), so I should help them out. I'm thankful for the people I've run into when I was starting out. Some would even offer some of their flies to me, so I've been doing the same. Also, you can tell a person exactly what you're using, and he may still not have any success unless he's fishing in the right spots using the right technique. This will at least remove one of the unknowns and give him a better chance. They would still have to figure other things out.
  4. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and this will be a trip of a lifetime for you guys!
  5. Those 1-2 seconds seem like an eternity, especially when it's a nice fish slowly taking a dry fly.
  6. I was out for a walk near my house late morning yesterday and came across a bunch of risers by the bank. They've been rising here for a couple days at the same time of day now. It was fun watching these 7 fish taking turns surfacing, but I couldn't see what they were eating. I was going to grab my rod, but thought it would be better just to watch them and enjoy it. I'm glad to see that there ARE fish near my house!
  7. sick fish! and sick fish...
  8. Wow, the RDR sounds like a river for masochists!
  9. So did you get the license plate at least? You can still call it in. Confrontation might be tricky, but subtly getting the license plate would help RAP track them down.
  10. I don't know much about fishing the Upper/Lower lakes, but there are lots here that can speak to that. You can head out to Elbow Lake, which is a 20-30 minute drive from your campground, and then a 1.2km hike to the lake. That should be doable with kids. There's lots of little brookies there, and you can keep up to 5 of them if you want to eat them. The lake is overpopulated with brookies, so you'd do the lake some good by taking a few out. Fishing is great from shore. Anything small (size 18 Adams, parachute Adams, mosquitoes, griffiths gnats, etc.) work well with 6x tippet, and for kids, you can tie on a bobber, then 2 feet of tippet and a small nymph. Cast out and reel in, and you should get some tugs. Hope that helps.
  11. Wow, a 12/13" fish in a small stream like that would get the blood pumping, eh? Thanks for sharing those pics!
  12. Does anyone know a way to embed a video? I just realized I was using my baby voice at the end of the vid... Hopefully I don't get my 7 month old confused with a brown!
  13. I rolled down my window to talk to another fisher and got 3 bites in a few minutes... somebody needs to tell them that it`s August!
  14. I have the Olympus Stylus 1030... waterproof, weatherproof, shockproof, and almost idiot proof.
  15. Don`t mind me, just testing a video link through photobucket...
  16. This morning as I was walking to work, I saw a biker on the ground, after getting hit by a car. Within a couple of minutes, 6 of us asked if he was alright, someone already called 911 before I got there, and a fire truck was there a couple of minutes later. All this happened at 7:50am, at the peak of rush hour, yet people were there to make sure he was alright.
  17. That's a great stretch of the Liv. Nice pics!
  18. A big brown on a dry: it doesn't get any better than that!
  19. Of all of the flyfishing shows I've seen, Iron Blue is still the best one out there. I had a VHS tape with a bunch of episodes recorded, but I forget who I lent it out to years ago. That would be worth dusting off the ol' VCR for.
  20. my first fish was a 6" brookie. my second was a 9" brookie. i caught lots of <10" fish before catching anything significant. i think you're a little ahead of the game right now. slow down!
