  1. Thanks for the reply! I was doing some looking up regarding the licenses and realised I could get it at FishTales so that is great. Will certainly be getng some flies for whats hot at the time when I'm there. But also lookig to just tie some general nymphs mostly. I guess the real question is what kind of sizes for the basics like hares ears, san juans, pheasant tails, caddis larva etc? Thanks Mike
  2. Hey all. Well I am planning on heading down to Calgary on easter weekend to visit familly as well as wet a line in hopes of aleviating the SEVERE withdrawl I am suffering. I expect to be primarily spending time on the Bow, but any other ideas would be welcome. Gonna be limited for gear as I will only have a 10' 5wt rod that I picked up at the wcffe. Gonna be hitting fishtales for the remaining necesity gear. Questions are, any recomendations on some must have flies for this time of year? Also where can I get my fishing license? Looking for any help and recomendations. Will be posting more details as things get closer and I know more what I will be doing. Perhaps be able to meet some people on the river for a little fun. Thanks all Mike
  3. Thanks for posting these! Hoping to get the chance to wet a line in the fina province of Alberta in a few weeks, gonna have to check things out very well. Mike
  4. Thanks for the replys guys! Looks like fishtales does infact have a few capes. I thought of ebay also, but I am away from home so getting stuff shipped is a pain. And besides I always prefer to support the local and canadian shops. Mike
  5. Hey all, just curious if anyone knows if any of the shops in calgary regularly carry Jungle Cock capes? thinking of splurging and picking one up for some steelhead and salmon tying. Planning on being in Calgary easter weekend so figured that'd be a good chance to try. Thanks Mike
  6. nice tie ggp, one i plan on tying myself. What hair did you use for the wing? I know the pattern calls for polar bear but from the picture that doesnt look like it. Mike
  7. The deer hair heads on streamers are primarily so they push lots of water, causing comotion in the water. As per other alteratives i have seen other non boyant hairs, (woodchuck spun in a dubbing loop is one i have seen). Also theres the sculpin wools and the like, but they can absorb water very well also causing a heavy fly. And nice flies! Mike
  8. Thanks for the help guys, nothing too fancy needed tool wise. Thinking I will gives this a try as another little hobby. I'm lucky that y job can allow me several months a year off so lots of time to play. Thnk I may give this a try this summer, already have most of the tools and plan on picking up most of the others anyhow. Once again. Thanks all. Mike
  9. I own the snowbee system in the spey size. No complaints with it at all its unbeatable for the price. It may not be the prettiest of reels bt functionally its great! and for the price unbeatabe i beleive. I have just recently started upgrading my spey reels to nicer reels, but that is the gearhead in me, I will always keep the cartridge system for backup. Mike
  10. Sorry for bringing up an old post but DANG!!! those are some beautiful nets you have all built. Gonna have to look into that book cause I am very interested in looking into this. Outta curiosity what would be te minimum required tools to buld one of these? Again beautiful nets! Nice work! Mike
  11. I dont see this really hurting the shops. At least not here in Canada. The orvis example brought up earlier is a perfect example of this. By the time you look at what they are charging online for the product, and the ridiculous! shipping charges they charge Canadians. Not to mention the duty and taxes Canada customs will nab ya with, the product often ends up costing much more then what you could get it at the shop for. I do a fair bit of mail order for tying and fishing stuff due to no shops where I live. But even then I try hard to stick to the Canadian shops just for the shipping and duty costs. It has to be one heck of a good deal at the American shop to make it worth my while. Mike

  13. Hey everyone, on my recent trip to Calgary a couple weeks ago i decided to pck up some flexament to give it a try. Just curios if anyone has any tips on using it. I also picked up the thinner, for those that use it do you thin it right away for regular use? When using it to coat feathers for shellbacks etc? do you just brush it on the feather lighly? thin it first? Also another semi related question, What aplicator bottles do you all like? I wanna get an aplicator bottle as I do not like the container the flexament comes in. Thanks for any info. Mike
  14. Spent the whole weekend at the show myself, first one for me and an expensive one at that! lol! Picked up a norvise, norbobin and the dubbing brush table. Even though i need another vise like i need a hle in the head! lol! And also like Murray I also picked up a Snowbee Prestige in the 10' 5wt. Couldnt pass up the deal Courtney had, an it feels like a SWEET stick! Add to that a few books, capes and other miscelaneous items and the credit card is smoking but all worth it! Had a great time! Those of you I did meet at the show was great to meet yas! I'm hoping to get back out here this spring for a weekend to actually put the new stick to the test! Will let you all know. Mike

    Bulk Beads

Thanks guys, had copletely forgoten about Canadian Llama. I have checked ebay also and found one that may be a possibility. Used to be a seller on ebay that had like a 500 pack with a box for a very decent price, nice thing was you could pick sizes and colors in denominations as little as 20, which is nice for the odd colors you just want a few of. Oh well. Thanks again all. Think I'll put in an order to canadian Llama would rather suport a canadian company. Mike

  17. Hey everyone, curious if anyone knows a good source for buying tungsten beads in larger numbers for a good price? I'm looking to buy at least a couple hundered beads and fly shop prices get a little crazy. Thanks for any recomends. Mike
  18. not into skiing but that is defenitely some wild footage! sweet little video!
  19. Thanks guys I'll try a few of them out. I am somewhat familiar with Calgary but it has been 5-6 years since I last been. Also do absolutely plan on seeing all three shops either at the shop or at the show and I know there will be many dollars spent lol! Its kinda funny in past times to Calgary although I've never fished I have certainly spent a few dollars at the fly shops. Its an addiction lol as I'm sure many here know! Once again thanks! looking forward to meeting some people at the film festival and the expo. Mike
  20. Thanks for the reply! Info is one of the main reasons I am going to the show. That on top of the fact I have wanted to attend for years, but its a long trip from Ontario! Thanks Mike
  21. Hey all. I am seriously planning on taking an extra day off work and heading to Calgary on the Thursday to take in the film festival before the fly fishing show. While I have familly I can stay with over the weekend for the show, I dont wanna impose on them for the Thursday night as I will be getting in to town not long before the films start and I assume it may be a late night. Looking for some recomendations for a hotel/motel near where the IF4 is being held. Afordability is also a good thing as this will be an expensive weekend for me. Proximity to restaurants/pubs also a good thing lol. Thanks for any help. Mike
  22. Hi everyone, been a member on this board for a while but only recently been cecking it out. I am from the Sault STe Marie area of Ontario, however I travel a lot for work and spend more time away from home then home. Currently working in Regina which allows me to attend the fly fishing show in Calgary seeing as its only an 8 hour or so drive. My first question is, what is the show usually like for being able to purchase tying materials? Are the local shops usually also open during the show? I plan on being at the show quite likely for all 3 days, need to look into the seminars I want to take in. My next question, I am planning on taking about a 1 month or so road trip in Alberta this summer. A good chunk of that time will likely be spent in the Calgary/ southern stretches of the province as I have family in Calgary. But I am also thinking of spending some time in the north of the province. Mainly looking for some must have flies for fishing the province. Also any other info regarding places to fish and such would be hugely apreciated. Also looking for any help on recomended reading/research material regarding fly fishing in Alberta. Thanks ahead for any help. I'll be sure to pop by the booth while at the show and maybe run into some of you there. Mike
  23. Thanks for all the help guys! Unfortunately I just found out yesterday that my plans for work out there have fallen through so I wont be seeing Calgary any time in the near future. Thanks for all the help though. I will be keeping all this info in mind. in hope of a future trip sometime. Thanks Mike
  24. Thanks Murray! I know the local fly shops decently well out there! Fish Tales has always been a stop made usually afew times every time I'm down! Thinking the 6wt will be the rod I'll be picking up. I have a reel already loaded up for a 6wt that I'll be bringing. just dont wanna bother with the hastle of shipping a rod. Long items can really be a pain! loL!! Thanks Mike
