  1. Took a few days off last week and went to BC and came back to fish some water in Alberta. Man, is licensing expensive in BC. For 2 days of fishing it cost us 84 bucks or so as we were on classified waters (St Mary and Elk). The St Mary was a total bust but the Elk delivered some nice cutts, bulls and scenery. Thanks to those who offered advice on access points on the Elk. Some pics in no particular order. The pics aren't great but it was a good trip nonetheless. 2. Hi BBT, He lost it upstream of sentinel. It's fallen in the water so it'll likely not be in that area any more unless it washed up on shore. I figured that somebody from this board would've been fishing the canyon or downstream of there and seen it float by. The box and flies are only worth about 40 bucks or so. It's a friend's first flybox stocked with all his flies that he'd just bought. It's not critical. He'll just have to learn to zip up his pockets all the time. Don't change your plans on account of this fly box. Just figured that there were people fishing downstream of us that would've seen it. Thanks.
  3. Hi there, A friend of mine lost his fly box on the highwood this past saturday. I know this is a shot in the dark but curious if anyone found it. It's a dark green with 'white river' on the front lower right hand corner. The left side had dries and the right side had streamers. If you've found it and want to return it, please PM me and I'll come pick it up from you. Monster 50 cent reward offered. Thanks, Rich
  4. sweet pics. i'll be fishing for those guys soon enough. how in the hang did you reel in a bass in those lily pad fields??
  5. So, I've only been around Calgary for 3 years now and am actually leaving at the end of this year but I'd like to know what fishing was like prior to the catch and release regs coming in during the late 90s. What were the regs before? Take all the fish you like? What were the stocking programs like for streams? How were the regs implemented? Phased approach? Were there less fish caught? Smaller fish caught? More land erosion/degradation/pollution/garbage on the streams because people were less conscious of their impacts? Water quality improved? Insect life changes? More/less people on the waters? Just curious if anybody has looked back at the changes in the regs and had any perspectives on any of the above or others that they'd like to share as I'm sure I'm not the only one that's moved to Calgary in the past 3 years. It would also help inform board members on fisheries management (as I know I'm almost entirely ignorant on this subject). My apologies if this is a contentious issue. Thanks for sharing! Rich
  6. we're gonna take back the white house......beyah! http://www.uvouch.com/video-Chappelles-Sho...ard-Dean-267787 took me a whole 13 minutes to find this video. hope you guys appreciate it, but i think most of the credit goes to esleech.........beeeeyyaaaaah! better quality one here: http://www.comedycentral.com/motherload/pl...p;is_large=true
  7. esleech, you forgot to mention....... beeeeyyyaaahhhhh!!
  8. i tried it out but the conditions were not favourable (high dirty water). no luck obviously. also tried it out on a private stocked pond and those rainbows wouldn't take either. hopefully will get to try it out again on the elk next week.
  9. Well, why not start a letter-writing campaign here? There are some 680 members here and perhaps a generic letter sent to Clive's listed contact info would show that there is concern about East Slopes Management. I ran into an SRD officer down in the Castle drainage this past weekend and he was pissed at the situation as well. Perhaps FFC can start a letter-writing campaign? I'd like to stay optimistic thinking that a couple hundred letters can still influence beauracratic decision makers. Moderators, please remove this post if inappropriate. I can draft a letter if necessary.
  10. nice work on letting them know that they were doing something bad. on a side note lynn, i have a friend that just landscaped her front yard using natural prairie grassland grass. the stuff that evolved here to survive in these specific conditions instead of imported grass that has high water requirements. can give you more info if desired.
  11. i vote for bowcrow cutt & reel, regdunlop humpy rainbow and fisher26 head shot.
  12. boo east boo ontario boo quebec hurray for the west!!! (except for bc and saskatchewan) yukon, NWT and manitoba are neutral. west vs east.....Let's get it on!!
  13. upload the image to photobucket and then insert the url location in the appropriate box.
  14. Thanks for the replies. Your experiences are helpful as it puts a personal element to the subject. Reading about it in an article is tough to judge how important it is. I had not bothered to wear my wading belt over the past few years on my old waders and my breathables and I have fished the high gradient mountain streams as well as the bow/oldman/crow etc. I'll make sure to take the 3 seconds to put it on from now on. Thanks again for the responses.
  15. So I've been reading a bunch lately about how dangerous it is to wade, fall, and have your waders fill with water. Has anybody had this experience? Any lessons-learned to share? More dangerous on a lake versus stream/river? Supposedly you lose mobility and it's tough to kick if you're in deep water. Just curious to see if anyone here has been a situation like that and can offer any advice. Also found an article on flyfisherman.com about wading safety: http://flyfisherman.com/skills/dgwading/ It's never happened to me but always figured I could just stand up as I usually fish streams/rivers.
  16. i've been using a notepad file and inserting that into a folder with the pictures from that particular day. usually record bug activity, weather, strikes on what flies, and weather conditions on the day before and after. i will be converting this into an excel format to make it sortable by river system and date and it's going to be totally awesome.
  17. i've tied up some of these bad boys last night and will see what they are capable of on thursday. had some problems with the foam rotating around the hook so i dubbed the hook with ice dub (bright green and claret) to keep it from swinging around. i'm sure it will only help in attracting the fish. i'm sure the fly will work (as i was getting hits swinging a chernobyl ant the other day) but will report back anyways.
  18. mr max took this picture. my first cuttie and every one since has been beautiful but a bit disappointing:
  19. thanks for the post flyangler. as you've tied this up already, is it necessary to have the tube or do you think you can eliminate that step and get the same performance? definitely tying up some of those for the cuttie streams. thanks!
  20. nice work buddy. great fish to get your first dry fly fish on. my first dry fly fish measured in at ... ahem..... 6".
  21. hurray for free beers! i'm the thirsty looking guy. i fished ants today as well and noticed that i don't have extended bodies past the gape (and it's on a large gape hook). i've tied the body along the shank and i got 6 of 6 on the line when they actually took the ant. hurray for ants!
  22. those tiemco's you're using look like curved stimulator type hooks. i've received advice from troutfitters telling me not to use curved hooks like that use a larger gaped hook that is straight. they also recommended clearing away hackle/foam from the hook end as the fish can push the hook part of the fly away from it's mouth with excessive material back there. suggestions for experimenting would be to use a wider gaped hook, and tying your foam bodies so that they don't extend to much (or at all) behind the fly with the body tied along the shank, and using less stiff rubber leg material. my thinking is that the fish is likely pushing the gape part (via the extended body, legs, hackle ect) of the hook away from it during the take and mouthing the rest of the fly somehow. then when you strike, the fish is mouthing it and lets go after a headshake. all things that people have noted already to this post so not sure why i'm summarizing .... but there it is! not sure how to correct the heli spin.
  23. thanks for the great pics esleech. good to see you're getting your exercise too! canyon climbing is fun!
