  1. I'd just email customs and ask them how you should label your goods.
  2. i'd take a hat and perhaps a gold T. i'd also like fair trade goods but that's just me. perhaps we can have a logo design contest? winner gets 50 cents, a kick in the pants, and a chance to fish with the illustrious maxwell?
  3. good to see that you're getting back into the fishing and keeping rotary mechanical equipment away from your crotchal regions.
  4. sorry to hear that. i worked at the calgary board of education during the telus strike a couple years ago. there were some interesting moments on the telus street corner (kiddy-corner to CBE). i'll be switching from telus this fall as i'll be re-locating. unfortunately most people don't have the resources to look into social/environmental practices (such as labour practices) when choosing so they just go with the lowest cost. for telus cutting costs and increasing revenue means exporting jobs to india (or at least that's how i understand it). good luck with the lawsuit.
  5. Thanks Harps. Those pictures helped. It would be a good idea to photograph some redds this fall and post an article on how to cross streams since bull trout populations are so sensitive and considering the amount of fishing we do all year including the fall on those mountain streams.
  6. Only posting this because someone was asking. It's from the Parkland Institute. For those interested in the SPP and implications for Canada, US and Mexico. You'll be able to hear both sides of the argument. Regards, Beeayyaahh! ==================================================== Hello Parkland friends, We hope you are having a good summer. As you may know, on Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 20 and 21), Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be meeting with U.S. President George Bush and Mexican President Felipe Calderon in Montebello, Quebec. The purpose of the summit is to move forward closed-door negotiations among the three countries for a "Security and Prosperity Partnership" (SPP) - integration well beyond the scope of the current North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Parkland's Director Gordon Laxer will be on the radio on two separate occasions on Monday August 20th on this topic: 1. CBC Radio One's "The Current" (national) Debate between Gordon Laxer and John Manley (former Minister of Foreign Affairs) on the merits/dangers of the SPP "The Current" runs from 8:30 am to 9:30 am on CBC Radio One 2. CBC Radio One's "Wild Rose Country" (Alberta-wide) Gordon Laxer will be interviewed about the SPP and its implications. "Wild Rose Country" runs across Alberta on Radio One from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Both interviews will be on Monday August 20th. We hope you listen in.
  7. Thanks for your replies. I guess I'm just concerned that I won't be able to tell the redds from the already gravelly/rocky bottom of most mountain streams. On streams like the bow with debris and weeds it's a bit more obvious? Are bull trout redds blatantly obvious? I've never noticed one before. Thanks.
  8. Have some questions on bull trout spawning activity: 1) What time of year to bull trout generally start their spawning ritual (I don't yet carry a thermometer)? 2) What do the redds look like since they are already in gravelly bottoms anyways without much debris? Other characteristics of bull trout spawning sites? 3) Do people stop fishing for bulls even though they may start spawning before Oct 31? Perhaps a more appropriate question for Sept/Oct but the other bull trout thread got me thinking. Thanks.
  9. great pics. thanks for sharing those and the story.

    Hoppers

I read an article a while back stressing the colouration of hoppers as different species can have different colours/markings. They talked about matching the colour to produce the best results. I think it was an FAOL article but I can't remember and a 5-minute search didn't turn up anything. Try checking the colour of the hoppers by the water your fishing and compare with what you're chucking out there. Might be the difference between yellow/green/brown/tan body colour. I myself haven't fished hoppers much so I couldn't tell you from my own experience.
  11. yep. num ti jah lodge is on bow lake. didn't go inside to check it out.
  12. My pleasure gran. Unfortunately a light rain came through while we were at the falls so hence the foggy look. Here's a better pic of Bow Glacier Falls:
  13. Random other pics just for interest. Hikes were super easy. Bow Lake and Bow Glacier Falls is about a couple hours and practically no elevation gain. MIstaya is some 500 m and Parker Ridge is about an hour hike with a spectacular view. All hikes are along 93 through Banff. Mistaya (don't fall in!): Saskatchewan Glacier (Parker Ridge):
  14. Went up to Banff NP last weekend camping and hiking and thought some would be interested to see Bow Glacier and some headwater pics. Figured the bow fanatics would be interested and perhaps make the pilgrimage up there as well as the scenery is spectacular. Easy hikes too. Here are the pics! Bow Glacier and Glacier Falls: Headwaters: Emptying into Bow Lake: Bow Lake:
  15. well, went down to flytyer's place to pick up my flies and then headed down to fish creek park. then to southland and then to glenmore. got out of the car, put on the waders, boots, vest and pack and go to grab my rod and ... yep, left it at home. so, just curious as to how many people leave their fishing gear in their cars 24x7 throughout the summer and how many have had their stuff ripped off. my stuff isn't expensive but just a huge PITA to replace it all so i haul it into my apt every time i get back. so, how many keep their gear in the vehicles 24x7 and how many people have been jacked? does it depend on rural vs urban dwellings?
  16. nice ties! i'm going to have to try experimenting with dyed pheasant tails! hurray for exclamation marks!!!
  17. You can also vary the retrieve. I've also just stood at the head of a pool and bomb your streamer down to the end and pull it up slowly through the pool. When the line tightens (feels like a snag) then set the hook hard. And like Max has said, carry a selection of flies. I've caught bulls on small 1" streamers and 6" streamers. Sometimes there's just a switch that flicks on in their head and turns on that killer instinct and they'll want to chase something down and maul it. Same goes for varying the retrieve. Sometimes a slow retrieve does it; sometimes an erratic retrieve. I'm no pro-star either. Just sharing some luck that I've had the past couple of years. Good luck and let us know how you do next time.
  18. MrB, I was there a couple weeks ago. I found that on the lower sections the fish would come up and bump/sniff our dries (stimmies, hoppers, caddis etc) without any solid takes. We had some good hookups on smaller streamers in the 1.5-2 inch long range (clousers and bow river buggers). The upper sections had more willing dry fly fishing. Once we moved upstream, we had lots of takes on the adams, stimmies, green drakes (they were killing a #10-12 dark olive green parachute adams a couple weeks ago with no hatch on). I even nymphed after my friend went through with his dries and picked up a lot of decent fish that weren't rising. Good luck out there. Rich
  19. Haiti's been exploited to hell by Canada, the US and France. Their president was ousted by the RCMP and the CIA and their cheap labour force has been exploited by the developed countries. As the story goes, Haiti has a cheaper labour force than China and closer shipping. That's why Gildan t-shirts is moving all their manufacturing operations into that area. There's extreme profit to be made on the backs of poor people. Entirely understandable why she'd be a little cheesed that a North American white dude said hi to her on the street when his country is pummelling her's into the ground. I don't really understand the justification that we need to develop all Alberta's oil resources right now. worldwide oil is diminishing and will continue to do so. Most of the easy to extract stuff is already tapped into which will leave oil shale, oil sands and other heavy oil deposits. Wouldn't we make more $$$ if we waited for the price of oil to go up? The province only makes 1% royalty anyways on oil sands (I believe only 1 oil company pays a higher royalty rate) so we're not exactly raking it in. I'd prefer a little more funding to health care, schools and to fix some of these ridiculous calgary infrastructure problems. But whatever, I'm moving to Ottawa in the winter. Hurray for humidity!
  20. the burning man didn't do so hot. i got a few fish on the fly but on riffly water it basically looks just like a skating chernobyl ant. i think i'll just tie ants from now on.
