  1. Press release http://alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=3839827F257BB-C76D-22BB-FD7D842C472EB896 Email ... From: "Shane Petry" <shane.petry@gov.ab.ca> To: _____________ Subject: Fisheries Closures and Advisories Hello everyone, fisheries managers in the South Saskatchewan Region want to provide you with some up to date information relating to our ongoing concerns for fisheries in our streams and rivers in southern Alberta. In early July, fisheries managers issued general fisheries advisories for safe fish handling in streams and rivers in southern Alberta due to concerns about high water temperatures and low flows in many of our waterbodies. A subsequent advisory was issued on Friday July 31, that detailed the growing concerns of fisheries managers at specific watercourses with regard to increasing stress to fish resulting from high water temperatures and low flows in many of our watercourses. As you may well know, stress to fish from high water temperatures can be exacerbated by angling and cause increased mortality rates even when great care is taken to minimize handling of fish and to release them as quickly as possible. Over the past several weeks fisheries managers have been monitoring water temperatures at a number of locations in our streams and rivers in southern Alberta and we have considered these data in the context of the ability of cold water fish species to tolerate certain temperatures. Today we have issued variation orders to close a number of southern Alberta streams and rivers to anglers and we have updated our advisories to include additional rivers for which we have concern due to high temperatures and low flows. The purpose of these closures is to ensure the long-term sustainably of our fishery resources in the South Saskatchewan River basin that are at high risk due to intolerable water temperatures, lows flows and higher risk of mortality to fish Stream closures are currently being applied to rivers and streams where our fisheries management objectives are for cold water fisheries and the species present cannot tolerate elevated temperatures. At this time, the species of concern include, Bull Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Mountain Whitefish, Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout. Stream sections where daily maximum temperature is routinely exceeding 220 Celsius © and or where the daily average temperature (over multiple days) is exceeding either 180 C (Mountain Whitefish) or 150 C (Bull Trout) will be temporarily closed. Information may be found at the following link: http://alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=3839827F257BB-C76D-22BB-FD7D842C472EB896 Based on high water temperatures and a forecast of continued hot weather, temporary angling closures as of today (August 11, 2015) are implemented to safeguard fish populations until cooler water temperatures return at the following locations: § Sheep River from the headwaters to the Highwood River (including Gorge Creek and tributaries) § Threepoint Creek and tributaries § Highwood River from the headwaters to the Bow River § St. Mary River downstream of the St. Mary Reservoir & tributaries § Belly River downstream of Sec. Rd. 800- River only § Bow River from Bearspaw Reservoir to the Western Headworks Diversion (W.H.D. Weir) § Bow River from W.H.D Weir to the Carseland Weir § Bow River from the Carseland Weir to Hwy 24 Bridge(downstream side) § Bow River from Hwy 24 bridge downstream to Bassano Dam § Elbow River from Glenmore Reservoir to the Bow River confluence Government of Alberta staff will be placing signs at angling locations to inform the public of these closures and using many other forms of communication through websites, social media etc. to provide information to the public. If conditions moderate and water temperatures recover to normal levels, angling closures will be rescinded. It is expected that once closures are made, they will generally remain in place for a minimum period of one week. This will allow time for data collection, retrieval and analysis. Weekly analysis will also provide adequate time to determine if temperatures are trending sufficiently downward to warrant re-opening. 2. Thanks, but I never asked for a "newspaper" article. Mainstream media (MSM) in Canada (CBC, Global, CTV, Globe and Mail, The Calgary Herald, The Edm Journal, Toronto Red Star, most other newspapers, HuffPo etc etc ad nauseam lean left and hate the right. There are dozens of anti CPC articles on a lot of subjects. Included are guns, aboriginal affairs, women's issues, gay rights, "the environment," climate (yawn...), forestry, GMOs, food production, health care... all real or imagined issues that the CPC have pretty much wasted or destroyed or otherwise messed up according to MSM...or so you'd believe. Canadian MSM could not report factually on most subjects any more than they could pour piss out of a boot with the instructions written on the sole. But I digress ... Please cite legislation and specific clauses that have changed in a way to make that make rivers and lakes less protected than previously. One thing you all should be aware of: for every BILLION dollars Canadians piss away pretending we can do something about climate change, that one billion dollars is taken away from real environmental protection. It is a criminal disgrace that enviro groups (Pembina Inst, Greenpeace, Sierra Club, Forest Ethics, Tides Canada, Suzuki Foundation) are forcing such a waste of money on our society. There is only so much tax money to go around and the more we waste on climate the more the environment will suffer. Ironic wot? Regards and thanks, Clive
  3. "Removing protected status of hundreds of lakes and rivers?" Can someone provide a citation for the laws that were changed to cause this to happen?

    Owls Etc.

Lovely set. The owlet twins shot is superb. The fledgling bluebirds look stunned...because they are. Young birds take a while to learn how to feed themselves. Thanks for sharing. Nice. Real nice. Clive
  5. Oh oh! Nice snapshots!
  6. Only guy I know who gets a manicure for fish photos. The Bruce Jenner of fly fishing!! Well done Chris. Well done. CAS PS: Nice pix and fish.
  7. Weedy1 and jgib01 ... ha ha! Or possibly to make iced tea for the annual NDP summer BBQ in New Serepta, Alberta. I own two of these 1,000-L tanks: one as a nurse tank for hauling and the other as my cistern for my pressure pump system for two trailers at our summer property. Very common in owned or leased/rented summer developments. They fit in a truck box and suitable for hauling water with a 3/4-ton or if not full with a half ton. If I needed a new one, I'd post it on Kijiji.
  8. Good one Don. Thanks.A tad hard to do alone if the tick is on hard-to-reach places. The close stated, "...disposed of properly." I suppose in this day and age that means relocation and safe release following an environmental impact assessment and consultation with affected stakeholders, Greenpeace, the Pembina Institute, aboriginals and Neal Young.
  9. That's crazy insane. Great fun provided you could manage to stay on the wake board. I watched it for one hour before realizing the video was looped. (just kidding..honest.)
  10. Good eye alan2. Ooops. I don't make typos often so ya dun good. Thanks.
  11. Gonna be April 1 for 4 years just like the movie, Groundhog Day. You know Shannon is a threat when the Pembina Institute is warning her to be careful!! Here. Naturally, some will argue it's been GH day here for 40 years!!
  12. Oooh. Purdy fish.
  13. joke jōk/ noun: joke; plural noun: jokes 1. a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter synonyms: funny story, jest, witticism, quip; More pun, play on words; synonyms: trick, practical joke, prank, lark, stunt, hoax, jape; tes·ty ˈtestē/ adjective: easily irritated; impatient and somewhat bad-tempered. lighten up verb: to take things less seriously
  14. Saw this today....huh?
  15. Thanks guys. It really was a ton o' fun. High marks for being different. Fish are fish. Pretty neat watching them take the fly from about ten feet away, It was along the lines of what the famous Rancid Crabtree said, "Smoked carp tastes as good as smoked salmon when ya ain't go no smoked salmon."
  16. Nothing is better than sight fishing. Bonefish on the flats. Big rainbows (for a few years) on the marl flats at Whitetail. Sipping rainbows in shallows. Lakers in Nunavut at midnight! Spot a fish...it goes for your fly as you watch. Great stuff. (And on occasion you manage to NOT pull the fly away before the hookup! ) My grandson, Adam, had his appendix yanked out last weekend so could not go to school this week, but naturally, was up for fishing today. We drove up to CPR Reservoir north of Coaldale to catch a few pike at the outlet canal. Hummm .... Dozens of suckers cruised the gravelly shoreline of the 50-m outlet canal. (Not seen them there before so obviously man-made global warming is causing this!! But Rachel will solve this by the end of the month according to her new E&P minister, Phillips who left her CBC job to take on the daunting task! Go Rachy! Go Shannon! God help us all!) Since pike (if there were any) were not interested in his spoons or my flies, we figured, "What the heck?!" I had three fly rods in the truck and so rigged an egg-sucking leech 60 cm below a strike indicator. The casting was bit technical, having to flick the line about one meter past the tip top with the bobber indicator landing about 2 meters off shore. This was not for beginners. It is call the ¼-haul flick sort-of-a cast. The fly could be seen drifting in the slow current. A fish would often suck in the fly so subtly (before spitting the fly) that the bobber never twitched. I struck a few of these soft takes and did eventually hook one that way. Most were never felt. However, some fish were a bit more aggressive and hauled the bobber down. Fish on! Be still my heart! Anyway we fooled around doing this for about one hour and landed quite a few suckers and I might add before you scoff...a couple actually hauled a few feet of line and one jumped. I kid you not! These are bottom feeders ... just like trout! All good. In case you are interested in emulating our efforts. Today's sucker gear included a Winston Boron IIX with unknown line brand and Vanish leader and tippet material. Hat by RedHead at Bass Pro. Sunglasses by Foster Grant. Boots by Muck. Flats shirt by The Empire Corporate Attire. Laff all you want. Adam and I had a blast!
  17. Fun thread. "Bigbowtrout only has one testicle" He is half way to being Bruce Jenner then. I stand behind your decision Chris.
  18. Fab slab. Great experience. Good on ya Chris. 2016 Oscar nominations "Best Short Foreign Film" "Best Foreign Humour Short Film by an Amateur" "Best Foreign New-Age Arty Farty Short Film" "Best Out of Focus, New-Age, Short Film by a Complete ___ " (something something) The mind boggles. When I caught my biggest-ever rainbow in Canada I was alone...well adc was a few feet away (well, okay, 100 m away) and I had to manage. My biggest ever rainbow (Chile '09) was duly recorded. Sometimes ya win. Ya dun good. Clive
  19. Seriously. Forget the zipper and seal it up for good inside out out with a good adhesive/sealer.
  20. A good weight-forward floating line is all you need. The pike will be deeper come mid to late summer and into the fall, but you still can use a floating line with slow retrieves to get down. I never felt the need for a sink tip line...anywhere or anytime. Years ago fished with a guy in late fall and he was using a sinking line but had to retrieve too fast to keep the fly out of the weeds. The floating line allowed for nice slow retrieves (which seem to work better in summer and fall anyway) and floating line FAR out performed the sink line. My all-time fave pike line was the Cortland pike taper, but they stopped making it a few years ago. Someone else can offer the brand name of a good WF line. (I've not purchased one for a while.) Clive
  21. Thanks guys. Of the six I landed the other day, four were legal or close to it..two were ~ 22 inches. But Mike could be correct: the very thought of doing this will jinx me. How about those scuds this year?! Wow! See pix on BH thread. Clive
  22. Hypothetically speaking.... If I am fishing at QSF lake with a daily limit of one fish over 50 cm and I decide to kill a legal fish, am I allowed to keep fishing after killing one fish? I assume so, because on a lake where the limit is zero .. well, we keep fishing right? Let me explain: My 92-year-old dad wants a trout and we are going to Bullshead on Friday. Horrors ! Comments? Be polite. Thanks, Clive
  23. This is a crap quality image (I don't like it anyway) after being uploaded to Shaw galleries...no matter. It shows what I was getting at. The sun is offset...and has not blown out the foreground.
  24. Not really. Flare is flare. You could place the sun off to the side and the krypton glare would be reduced over the fish. I'll post an example. Sometimes a bit of flare is arty and looks good. Flare shots seem to be trendy in iPhone photos. Whatever. (Lots of great iPhone photos online, but 99% are mediocre record shots and that's fine. They are useful tools.) It is all about making the owner happy. Having a camera that shoots RAW files and underexposing a sun-flare shot and then working the image hard can bring up darker areas and ....blah blah blah. In the vast majority of cases, start with a good quality image and making it better in PSE or whatever program you use.
