  1. There are repair instructions on the Simms website. They provide instructions on how to locate leaks. Seams can be coated with aquaseal if that's where the leaks are. Also, I use layered method alternating aquaseal/reinforcing material/aquaseal to make really durable patches. I've used denim and nylon as the material. There is some additional bulk doing this. Patches do not breath. It's a small issue until the waders become more patch than original.
  2. "Education and transparency" will prevent this from happening again? The information on any topic is available to anyone who wants to do some research. Some people had been warning of these dangers for years. It took more courage than most people have to leave the herd and follow their advice. Neuroplasticity is an exciting advance in understanding of learning, behaviour and our ability to determine our own life course. However, the memories we retain and lessons we learn that actually impact our present and future actions inevitably have two extreme emotions attached to them - pleasure or pain. And, they are personal. We can't transmit the pain we're feeling from financial irresponsibility to our grand children any more than our grandparents could transmit the pain of the depression or the pleasure of financial responsibility to us. Our problems today are the result of our actions in the past. Our problems and triumphs in the future will be the result of our actions today. Within 5 years there will be other crisis' that bear remarkable similarities to past events - a new opportunity for education and transparency. It's all our fault but we have the power to change - we're just human.
  3. These things result from urbanization. The less people can recognize they are part of a food chain, the dumber they act. I have a sister-in-law who has gone off a few times on "how can someone hurt a (insert animal name here)?' yet she loves a good steak/chop/fowl/fish. In order for us to eat, something else has to die. Guns and rods used to be tools. Now they are means of destruction. Meat is extensively marketed in a sterilized manner. Several years ago, my family and 2 others did a canoeing trip in the Broken Islands. I went fishing and brought back enough to feed the group. The one Mom, a doctor, was alarmed when I started cleaning the fish when the kids were around. She thought they would be upset. The kids were fascinated. They got right into the action and even poked around in the guts. They had no qualms about eating the fish either.
  4. On a somewhat related note, I read that the actor Jeremy Piven (Entourage) was hospitalized recently due to mercury poisoning from eating sushi twice a day. Mercury builds up naturally within the fish near the top of the food chain - tuna is one of the worst for high levels. Cooking does not get rid of it.
  5. Hike new water - worked great his year. I want to see water like Humblefisherman's. Find more fishing partners. Met some new people this year and enjoyed the outings. I've tended to avoid crowds before. Learn spey. I'm kind of a technique junkie. Build 4 season knowledge of the Bow. I still feel weak on spring runoff fishing. Experiment with equipment. While my rod/reel/line combo works I want to try tuning it a bit. In other words I want to continue learning and meet interesting people.
  6. One of Maxwell's ancestors - spelling problems runs deep in that one.
  7. Switched the wife to Virgin mobile - they piggy back on the bell system and are way cheaper
  8. From the analysis I've read, the maximum level of auto job cuts through bankruptcy and downsizing would be 30%. I think United Airlines has been bankrupt at least twice. Rickr has the correct, balanced view. Humans have the well documented habit of extrapolating the past trend infinitely into the future. The car companies projected infinite growth. The north American manufacturers have greatly closed the gap with the Asians according to repair incident statistics. The differences now are minor statistically and, in some cases, have reversed. The low quality label is largely outdated. They were making lots of trucks and larger cars because that's what the market wanted. I think they spend too much on rebranding and advertising. Toyota and Honda rarely change the model names. They just continually retooled and improved the existing names. The original Civics and Corollas were crap but few remember that in light of the recent models. The auto problems were visible years ago. It has been a long time since Ford, GM, and Chrysler made money selling cars. Their profits have been entirely from financing activities for many years. Unions took too big a chunk without regard for the effect on the feeding hand. The successful unions of the future will need to get rid of the confrontational attitude and learn to work with their corporate employers. The basic premise that all people are equal is fatally flawed. Some people excel and should be rewarded and others are weak and should be fired. The biggest complaint of unions I've heard over the years is that non-performers are protected. Managements' nose was too deep in the trough. There's too much disparity between management and factory floor wages.
  9. Beware - Rick's new mustache was part of the initiation into a secret organization. Disregard what he said - the threat is real. Just add a turban and some more facial hair...
  10. There were a few speeches, some cheers and boos, some chants, and we ended by singing Oh Canada. The organizers then asked everyone to be sure no garbage was left behind and requested donations to the food bank. The food bank did well. Everything was done in under 1/2 hour. It was a very polite gathering. Nobody was arrested. Some people put considerable effort into signs. I saw one sign advocating western separation. Most were anti-coalition or just pro-Canada. Like me, the people I talked to had never participated in something like this before. There were several thousand people there. The NDP and Liberals have really done a good job in unifying Canadians on this one - against them. I believe it is Canadian to want to win but to accept defeat gracefully. I found out this type of gathering sticks to a strict schedule. The police provided permission to use the area across from city hall and there was no abuse of this privilege. The organizers started on time and used the time effectively. There was no belligerence exhibited. There was just a general concern that the voting process could be circumvented. We were reminded that the present Conservative party is a coalition. I remember there was considerable open debate and votes by both parties over this union as opposed to the back room, quickie deal announced recently.
  11. I definitely felt like a fish out of water. One morning I tried casting a clouser into an area I'd seen lots of fish while snorkeling. Even with the breakwater there was still lots of shore break and with all the surge I had no idea what the fly was doing. The tide was high at 8 am when I was out and the waves were breaking over the rock wall so the lagoon water was murky and moving lots. I might have had some success working with a nymph when the tide was low and the lagoon quieter but I hadn't brought any. There were lots of sargeant major fish (like large perch) and some schools of larger silvery bottom feeders that looked a bit like bonefish (up 18"). I saw some locals using handlines to cast bait into the main outlet of the lagoon with limited success. I'll have to do more homework before I go down again.
  12. I'm a pretty typical Canadian. The extent of my involvement in our political process has been to vote for the candidate I choose and either support or complain about their actions afterwards. I have signed a few petitions and written a very few letters on issues that really struck a chord. In other words, I've quietly accepted the consensus decision. Today, I'm going to attend my first ever political rally to protest the actions of the coalition that wants to overturn the results of the last election. This will be the largest time commitment I've ever given to any level of politics and may be the only rally I ever attend. I expect it will last about an hour. However, I believe the participation in this rally potentially speaks louder than any letter or petition - especially in Canada where we tend to let our elected officials govern. http://www.canadians4democracy.ca/rallies.php
  13. Thanx for the link and comments. I spend a week away and you folks let the country go to hell. I like the info on the differences between the US and Cdn housing markets - especially chart 1.15. I think people seriously overestimate the amount of power the government has in directing the economy and the time it takes to turn around. The 1996-2007 good years were largely a result of the increased trade brought about by the Mulroney government's implementation of the Free Trade Agreement with the US in the early 1990's. We found out Cdn people and businesses could compete very effectively and successfully in the US and world markets. Anyone who thinks government spending adds to the economy does not understand the bigger picture. Government spending comes from taxes. Taxes come from your pocket. It is impossible to tax your way to prosperity. Canadians are not generally politically active. In the US, every special interest group lobbies actively for their cause. The many competing demands inevitably result in watered down government programs. Canadian politicians are freer to enact needed policies, such as topping up social program contributions like EI when needed, than any US government. Apathy is not so bad when viewed this way. We just have to sure we have the right people in charge. Is it better to have a former law professor or an economist in charge at these times? Unlike private industry government tend to expand whether the economy is good or bad. It would be refreshing to see the public service share the pain. On the topic of the auto industry: the worst analysis I've heard is that about 1/3 of the jobs would be lost if the big 3 went through bankruptcy. The executives are trying to make it look like the industry would disappear. This would not happen. It would just need to become instantly smaller in response to a smaller market. We've gone through this process a couple of times in the past 30 years of the energy industry and the industry is still here.
  14. Thanx guys I've packed the 4pce and the streamer box. I don't have anything like a popper. I don't have anything that would qualify as salt water gear. I plan on cleaning rinsing afterwards. I think I'll oil the rod guides for a bit of protection. We'll see what happens. I've caught mackerel incidentally while dropping a buzz bomb to bottom of rock fish on the west coast. They are little rockets. My gear could not handle a roosterfish - 5wt TFO and Tioga reel. I'm planning on small sizes. I do have 25# line for the tippet. I had heard the same thing about a license down there. Playa Del Sol Costa Sur - the breakwater is visible on google maps south of PV.
  15. That's a baby slide. I remember in the 1970's a 1/2 mile wide chunk of the Peace River valley near Hudson Hope slid and dammed it up. The Peace carries 80% of the fresh water in Alberta. There were the predictable forecasts of a catastrophic burst flooding areas downstream - didn't happen. It took the river a couple of spring runoffs to clean out the channel. It was impressive to see. A lot of real estate moved in a few seconds. The slump was about 1/2 mile wide and took the valley wall back about 1/4 mile.
  16. The family is taking a short holiday to PV, Mexico next week. We're staying at a beachfront resort that has built a breakwater out front to protect guests from the ocean swell. I figure it will harbour some fish also and was considering bringing my 4 pce for a bit of fun. Does anyone know what I could expect to catch? What kind of license would be required? Thanx
  17. It's been many years since I've been in that area and my initial thought was the same. That looks more like coastal rain forest - Alaska?.
  18. In early May a few years ago I rolled rocks after having no success. There were hordes of olive scuds. I switched to an olive flashback GRHE and hit 6 fish in the next hour - one was my largest trout ever. It would seem sometimes they are the most abundant food.
  19. Yay! More regulations!! More administrative paperwork without enforcement!! If we have enough, nothing bad will ever happen.
  20. That hits the nail on the head. Chavez is popular for now also.
  21. Go old school. Just tuck your lunch under your line arm while you fish. It will warm up from body heat. YUMMM!!
  22. BC Saskatchewan Manitoba Montana North Dakota South Dakota Wyoming pretty well pick any state in the US - royalties and taxes are lower, regulatory is less onerous. Alberta has small drilling targets, high and growing regulatory requirements, and high royalty rates.
