From my standpoint, the whole "fly fishermen don't poach" argument is totally baseless. Most fishermen, regardless of preferred style, don't poach. If a poacher happens to be an ice fishermen, the response is not BAN ICEFISHING! Same with spinner, or flyrod, or whatever. It is to stop poaching. Style of fishing has nothing to do with it.

Coalbranch ruuules. It was all new to me, but I still had some success on some small water. A lot of it was fishless (or seemed to be?). But some of those creeks are chock full of trout

Yeah, not interested in pellet fed pigs

Why would you want to fish the Alberta/Manitoba border????
If you got paid to fish, would you whine about where they sent you to do it?

Mmmmm lakers

IF I get stuck there, I care!!

If I have to go to a 20-22 I may not bother. I found a #18 in my desk and tried tying a spinner with it. Too small for my skillz. I figure it's a lost cause

What's out there for fishing? Broad brush approach. Think Prince Albert area. Trout? Pike? Eyes? Mostly rivers? Lakes? Let's hear it.

Todd is definitely one of the best. I love reading his reports.

Sweet dude. Must be some perks to working in a flyshop You got more money in tungsten beads than I do fly tying materials

Just here.

Another vote for TXL. Sweet rod. 3wt is your best option, because you don't have to be afraid of taking on 3-4lb fish with it. Just in case

Creeks. I fell in love with the Pembina, Lovett, L Smoky, N Raven, Blackstone etc last summer. I need more AB small stuff!!! It's all lake fishing here. I'm a stream and river guy. Technical casting, tight lies, branches, small fish, big fish crammed in small holes. Looooove it. "Riser. Onethirty outside seam under the willers, takem" as my buddy says

I tend to agree somewhat but if that's case, what is the real reason that it's closed during the winter months if there is the same harm done either by open water or ice fishing? I'm assuming then that by closing it there is bonking going on only half the year and doesn't get cleaned out as fast???? Or do studies show that mortality rates do increase with ice fishing??? I'm not sure.
Yeah, fish are in a depressed state in the winter. Whether it be Bullshead, the Bow, the North Sask or Dragon Lake. Fish are more susceptible to hooking mortality in the winter. The majority of icefishermen are your typical redneck joes. They have poor fish handling. Poor fish handling + weaker fish = more dead fish.
Cheers

BALLS????.... I got huge BALLS....And so do most people on this forum....Most of us love... and live to flyfish....Be damned if I am going to ice fish at B.H....If this fishery is not open to fish in the early spring....let's leave it alone!!!... till we have open water...It's only going to benifit the fishery... that has only suffered of huge fish since 2005...
Your reply is exactly what will keep those forum members from posting their fishing location tomorrow And people wonder why we have gear fly bait jetboat icefishing debates. Tako out

As an aside, you may be looking at a later opener to avoid this situation. Our trophy lakes do not open until May 1. You might be looking at an April 15 opener next year to err on the caution side.
