no fly testing as of yet, although I have a feeling those two will hit what ever you put in/on the water .. however Ive been fooling around with crickets on a string (trying to condition them to eat from my hand) .. and they won;t go near it if its not dead drifted -

Well, after a long busy summer which included a new house and a new job, I finally got around to setting up the trout tank. 125 gal tank with two rainbow trout one 6" and one 8". They have been in the tank for about a month or so and are doing very well, living on a diet of high protein fish pellets and and even more feeder crickets, (it's so cool watching them pound the crickets off the surface). They are the newest addition to the family and provide great motivation watching them from my tying desk. I hope to post some footage of the fish feeding in the future. A special thanks to board member Bobr whom without none of this would have been possible..I hav'nt forgetten my friend I still owe you big time. -
Lookin good Doc..Thanks for the post

call me crazy if you wish .. Brasso, used for cleaning brass works wonders..or try Mcguiers PlastX (used for restoring scratched or hazed vehicle plastics). .if the scratches are real deep start with 2-3000 grit sand paper if you can find it.. -

Seems nobody has any Brookies available..My friend Dan from Valley Spring Trout told me of some sort of ban because of a parasite or something? A Bull would be nice but....oh well.... LOL...joking people joking..think a 30" bull could live in a 50 gal tank? -

Thats wicked Brett, Thanks buddy..I do plan on having insects live in the tank as well. It will be awhile before I set it all up, were moving end of July. I have a contact for triploid rainbows but thats all he has right now..I'd really like Brookies or dare I say Bullys. -
I can understand what your trying to achieve by having the hopper fully adjustable, but why would you want to run a hopper as an indie without a hook in it? There are ways to make your hopper (no hook) adjustable, double your line put it through the eye and around the fly..pull tight. same way you attach a thingamabobber style indie..this method won't really work with a hopper with a hook in it cause if you hook a fish on the hopper it will almost for certain break your line.

Picked up a 50 gal running tank for a deal and have been wanting pet trout for years, gonna give it a go. Wondering if anybody has experience with pet trout and I'm looking for ideas for a chiller and filter set up. Im thinking of going with a canister filter at about 350-400 gph, but have no idea about a chiller, Ive heard most people make their own, but am having a hard time finding plans. Any help would be appreciated.

Crazy..I read an article on the poisoned fish in Lake Athabasca and how the natives are experincing new illnesses such as cancers surely caused by the toxins..Also read an article years ago that Dr. David Suzuki wrote about a kayak trip he took down the Athabasca and he deemed the oil sands project to be "the worst ecological disaster in the world" he spoke of toxic waste "seeping" out of the banks from operations. 1

If you are IN the river, targeting fish downstream close to the banks is tough, chances are you'll spook them before you can present to them..stay on the banks and as far back as you can..you can get in the river downstream and present up stream casts as you slowly wade upstream (the river will wash your "presence" away), this is a little more difficult with a weighted rig as alot of the time your casting over or right on top of the fish, this method is invaluable for fishing smaller creeks where the water is low and the fish spook easliy. Another good method to use would be high sticking or short line nymphing, best used in deeper runs close to shore..stay low and lob a short line, (usually with a heavy rig to get down quickly) mend with your rod tip raising it as you rig drifts closer, keeping very little slack in your line so you can feel the strike (you can use an indie but personally I find it much less effective) .. these are the techniques I use close to the banks, this time of year visual stealth is not quite as important but its not a bad idea to practice anyway to keep good habits..remember to step lightly as not to spook the fish..they can "hear" (more like feel) you long before you get close..STAY OUT OF THE RIVER DURING HIGH WATER ITS DANGEROUS!!!!! you don;t need to be in there anyway..

Broke one of my Sage rods for the first time last summer .. total jackass move, I was putting it away in the dark both sections ended up in the same side of the sock..when i put it in the tube I guess the guides must have overlapped and snap - clean off in two places..brought it to my fly shop..they took care of sending it in and such..6 week wait and 40.00 when i went to pick it up...but the only Sage i I ever broke ..

Yep .. My grandfather has a Fenwick which is older than I am..or at least his original rod was older than me, betcha he's after going through a dozen replacements from all sorts of breakage .. "all broke on big fish" if you ask him though .. only cost him shipping and never had a issue .. he says he'll fish Fenwick to the bitter end and who could blame him ..

How about fish all day and not break your rod? ... It's the warrenty were talking about so ... TFO hands down the best warrenty in the city... anybody know what kind of turnaround there is on mail in warrenty work?

yep great in city service .. I use to fish a TFO TiCr but now only use it as a spare (with no original pieces left i might add) dad was out a couple weeks ago and we went fishing..me being the good son i am let him fish my high end stick and I fished the TFO which broke on me again, for no apparent reason..that'll be 6 replaced pieces on a 4 piece rod...only two of which were my "fault", (I stepped on it at a join and bust two sections)..the other 4 all happened while fishing..my high end rods - only broke the tip of the lightest one once, not fishing related .. so 160.00 in repairs on a 300.00 rod is 460.00 OR the price of a new high end stick I should have bought in the first place me thinks ... the service is indeed great..but.......
