  1. Wholesale in Lethbridge didn't have any large neoprene waders today?!? Nor Size 9-10 wading boots in the top models. And missing a bunch of other stuff (lights sheaths, etc). Disappointing to say the least.
  2. Try Angler's Ridge B&B. It is the one right off of Hwy 507 near the Crowsnest River. The owner, Malcom B, is a key figure in protecting and maintaining the Trout Unlimited access lease on the Crowsnest. http://www.anglersridge.com/index.htm I really like the goat mountain cabins. They are always booked. And try Sara's right on the river... it's called the Bedside Manor, I guess? (always known it as Sara's). Cheers,
  3. I recieved this in email today from the Alberta Forest Products Association. Thought ya'll might be interested. Pretty plain survey.
  4. When my fiancee comes fishing with me I cut the hooks off at the bend for her. She casts great and loves getting strikes (and some fish stay on for a while), but she has no desire to bring them in most of the time. It really is all about the hunt and then that moment when a fish rises to a fly you've tied, chosen, and placed perfectly above him, the take. Everything after that is wasting time that you could use targeting another fish. Of course, there has to be something said about holding a magnificant trout in the water and watching as it slips out of you hands into the deep.... real religion in there somewhere.
  5. I think you should avoid casting on closed water. More trouble than it is worth... especially having the equipment to fish (you don't have to catch fish to be accused of poaching). Its not worth going to court to explain to the judge that you were practicing. Good casting exercises here: http://www.sexyloops.com/carlos/ Grass is good.
  6. Hi FisherWoman Like mentioned above Fly Angler's Online has a great Beginner site. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/beginners/ The author works you through a bunch of great lessons. Hipwader (Canadian FF Site) also has a really good online flytying course. http://hipwader.com/flyfishing/oreillys-fl...y-tying-course/ Here is some Hook and Hackle (Calgary) info. I've used this stuff to help beginners before. http://hookandhackleclub.tripod.com/btying.html (the site has pop-ups) Their are also some videos on http://www.hook.tv/ and you can download the PBS series "Anglers Art" Online ( http://kwsu.org/Offers/OMNFlyTying.aspx ). Its a great series and you can get over 50 of the half-hour shows for free!!! These are the program descriptions. And You tube has some tying videos, along with the rest of the junk on there. NOTHING beats a good hands on course, though. Cheers
  7. Llike mentioned above, ask CP rail first. Goodwill fixes and charity works are easier without the media and lawyers involved.
  8. Kick boats look very cool. Get wet. Fish closer to the fish. Ultimate control. I think??? I want one.
  9. That'd be the way to do it. On the map it looked like it is actually 3 lakes with the west most crossing a quarter section line (not always related to property). I still think I'd rather a peice of unimproved land with a nice section of river (perferably un-boatable river) running through it. I don't do the lake thing very often (although with more delayed harvests, I'll try). I know of a lake down here that was privately stocked, but a township right-of-way ran through it, there-by allowing public access. Big Charr, brookies, and rainbows too. A shame.
  10. TroutSlayer, That's a great shot. Love the light on the fish and the weed in the background. Cheers,
  11. Who stocked the lake, is it connected (looks like it is), which would mean it is public lands. Under the new wetland act, you can't fill it in, and there are drainage issues to deal with eitherway. Anyways who in there right mind buys a rec property then subdivides so you have neighbours (probably stupid too)? It then becomes a little piece of city, manicured lawns, noise, concrete, and all. $879k... Now that's alot of fishing trips to real water around the world with wild trout.
  12. I would join if I was in Calgary. I have a ton of respect and admiration for the H&H club. On very short notice the H&H club, without knowing me and no reason to trust, lent me 30 fly tying vises and materials to teach a beginner class. It's groups like these that need support to keep our youth involved in fly fishing. I would recommend everybody take some time and swing by... it'd be a great investment. Cheers,
  13. I was given a sheet like that (so soft thread squeezes it), I was told it was from a golf shop... I thought it was more common, but I can't seem to find anything close online from golfing shops; except this, with tungsten: For mixing with epoxy heads... http://www.mccanngolf.com/index.asp?sectio...ls&pid=1041 And this tubing from a fly shop: http://www.britnett-carver.co.uk/flyonly/prods/525.html And lots of good Tungsten beads... http://www.topmim.com/beadcolors.htm Let us know if you find a better wrap, I'll keep looking. Cheers,
  14. They ate what they thought was an alien... ?!? And we wonder why UFO's try to stay out of sight!!
  15. I like those responses in the link: Nice when people don't dumb it down with political correctness, and just say what's on their minds.
  16. You can pick up tungstun wrap from golf shops, or order it from golf shops... works about the same; a little more cost, a little better sink rate, and you can put your fingers in your mouth when you work with it... Cheers,
  17. Don't believe it. I say beer at his house, and we'll see if it's true...
  18. There's a great Ethiopian Restaurant in Lethbridge with big meals for under $15... does that count??
  19. I received this in an email today on FF@... I am no way qualified to comment on any of this, and this isn't my opinion... I just thought it was good. (I don't know if it applies here or not) . . . Since it is Royalty revue season let's put royalties in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59. So, that's what they decided to do.The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20."Drinks for the ten now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings). The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings). Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got a dollar out of the $20,"declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man," but he got $10!" "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!" "That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill! And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier. David R. Kamerschen, Ph.D. Professor of Economics University of Georgia
  20. Thanks guys, 98's been a long time coming... No time to fish, got walls to tear down in our new house. Taco, are you saying I should be looking for unhappily married women tonight?!? I think Farrah would shoot me, even if I didn't find any.
  21. Great advice above, I'd recommend heading up 87 from Scottsdale into the mountains along the Apache Trail and hitting some of the cool desert gulch creeks. It looks like amazing fishing, where you have to avoid snakes and cactus on your way to find trout. Ask on the http://www.smallstreams.com/ board. Lots of folks from Arizona, and they'll be able to hook you up with some great fly shops and maybe point you to some Arizona water.
  22. Try tying it on a short shank hook, and only have the extended body sticking it out back. You wouldn't have to worry about it affecting hook-ups if its a demo/art fly. It looks good otherwise... and I think the x wings just comes with practice and a steady hand. (Try some looser wraps to position the wings than a couple of tight ones over the loose, not on bare stem, when you have them where you want them.) Cheers, Harps
  23. 2 more of mine... Predator and Prey Cheers,
  24. Plus if you get a picture (of the plate), send it to an insurance agency, maybe treating their own vehicles like that will get their insurance bumped. Alberta Insurance Rate Board Contact Alberta Government Automobile Insurance contacts All off hwy vehicles have to be insured in the forestry; maybe if we hit them in the wallet for an environmental destruction premium. The only other way is to put legislation like BC did (on another post).
  25. Call the environmental spill line (enviro emergency line) 1-800-222-6514 (#7378 on cell) ATVs leak oil, and that is a deposit of deleterious substance as per Sec 36 of the Fisheries Act. Environment Canada and/or Alberta Environment have to respond. Also call the Rap line and the local F&W office, Fisheries and Oceans, the RCMP (Reckless driving??), and the minister. We need to have public pressure to get gov't action!!!
