Awesome!! I had heard that Terry hadn't heard anything yet, but this is great news!! For all you folks from Calgary... Police is weedy, full of drunk locals, and will probably never take off from all the local poaching. Plus if you can find a wind free day, good luck. Wind free days are when the fish stay on the bottom from a passing cold front. Bullshead is a much better lake, easier to get to, and you can't beat the scenery. I hear Bullshead will also be producing many +30in fish. Cheers,

Which Is Your Favorite Reel Maker?
Harps replied to NormanMcLean's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
You guys tried the Loop CLW reel? Composite material, but they look like they are constructed well. I'm looking for real reviews, but nobody seems to be saying much. If they are cheap and tough they may be worth picking up at least as a back up reel. -
If you can't wait, go buy a 50ft roll of flat dental floss... It works great for dapping, I've got trout, and all sorts of sunfish with it. Floss, twice the length of the rod (I just tie it on my line), followed by a short section of tippet. Let the wind toss the fly around and dance it on top of the water, its great to watch the smaller fish chase your fly around everytime it lifts off the water. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/showthr...t=floss+dapping

Example Of Where You Should Be Keeping A 'low Profile'?
Harps replied to birchy's topic in Ask the Pros
No matter what you fish for, you will do better off if your prey does not know you are there. I fish a couple of little creeks, mostly some brookies, but some of size (and rainbows too). Crawl on your belly up to these creeks and you will see the decent fish... walk up and you get only the small ones. Its a whole new game lying on your belly with your fly only over the bank. Of course, broken fast water hides you from the fish as much as it hides the fish from predators above. And walk soft too, fish feel footsteps through their lateral lines. -
Hey Greg, I went with the switch 6/7 (+line), good for steelhead too, as well as bones, etc. and it gives me the chance to throw decent overhand casts and learn to spey. Can't wait to get it!!!

I'll wish you all Merry Xmas... Great time on the forum with you all... Here's to good fishing in the new year (and over the holidays)... Enough of this office stuff, I'm going home to get into the eggnog and rum... Cheers!!!

Tough call, All excellent tyes!!! My vote isn't for what type I like best (speys), but for eveness of ribbing, floss, tags, size, dimentions, etc. Hard choice...

Those spearing decoys arew great... read an article about them somewhere, don't remember where. It is apparently a lost art, but making a comeback in the Eastern states. Very cool... decoys to entice pike to withing spearing range. They'd look good on the shelf in my fly tying room. Nice find.

Great, I've been looking at Beulah rods all month. Highly recommended by a steelheader over on Guito's Lethbridge board. Will be nice for winter nymphing down here. For switch rods, anybody have any advice... 6/7 or a 7/8 for big browns and bull trout?? I'm not sure which is more appropriate for S. Alberta Rivers with the wind.... Thanks!

I've got Bolo... That was a kickass game with 16 tankers killing each other. Download here: http://www.lgm.com/bolo/intro/ ...

I've got a big open park behind my house and a garage with beer... Guito, I think we should consider the wooden kilt for flies and beer... more light and quieter, although the scenery isn't as good.

i'd be interested in a dedicated fly fishing club in Lethbridge. Very interested

Norman McLean... reminds me of acceptable fly fishing writing... Also http://cgi.ebay.ca/Presentation-by-Gary-Bo...VQQcmdZViewItem There's this one... actually a very good book (you can find the non-limited edition books). His son also has an excellent text on casting: http://www.jasonborger.com/writingvideo.html Its technical, but the definitive book on all sorts of casting! The Borger Family was instrumental in making "A River Runs through It". I also like reading Flyfishing the 41st More about his travels than fly fishing... but he has some good trout books. There are also books like "Salmon Fishing in Yemen" and Cod: the fish that changed the world... (or something like that), interesting reads for folks interested in fish. The above recommendations are great too. It all depends on whether info books or recreation books are wanted. Cheers,

Thanks for doing the survey guys... ~3200 Albertans so far. The survey deadline has been extended until Dec 7. Still time to have your say... http://policychannel.com/cgi-bin/ciwweb.pl...id_javascript=1 Oh and don't forget to look over the Fisheries Act changes: http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?...ic=2469&hl= Cheers,

http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/media/newsrel/2007/hq-ac59_e.htm Recognized as one of the world's strongest environmental legislations... Now to be changed after 139 years of often not enforced existance... check out this quote from pre-Alberta Pincher Creek in 1897 regarding the enforcment of the Fisheries Act: “… if there is a question of ‘Fish vrs Irrigation’ the fish must go because the settlers here cannot possibly do without irrigation.” from Inspector Steele, NWMP. (Thanks Kerry Brewin) Anyways... Does making things simpler, cleaner and faster mean more pollitical decisions before we have scientific evidence??... or does it make things better?? Will licence sactions and tickets from a fisheries tribunal result in more enforcement because punishment is easier??... or more committed offences because the punishment is less?? Will inter-governmental, provincial cooperation mean less broad federal and more local pollitically influenced desisions (think oil sands)??... or will it result in more shared knowledge and better managed resources?? ...yeah, the feds will re-hire the staff they fired to do the work that the feds used to do... ) Will regulations for smaller projects result in less protection to the environment (no review, no enforcement, no cumulative effects considerations)?? or a stream lined proccess that focuses risk and resources on big problems. Fluffy hand shakes and promises over paved streams instead of big fines and jail time... Is the glass half full??... or half empty?? Read up on it, make your own decisions... tell the minister what you think! This will affect the future of your fishing across Canada!!! Speak up. Hopefully thare are other viewpoints besides gov't published ones... Suzuki (even though an extreme) can raise valid counter points, TU Canada should say something about this, and there will be lots from angling groups on the coasts. This is the most important topic on fishing in Canada and will affect every angler, whether you know it or not. Proposed bills are posted Here: http://www.parl.gc.ca/legisinfo/index.asp?Language=E If you are concerned about the direction (hidden or apparent) of the current government... you should be looking at some of these bills. Cheers,

Younger (dumber) versions of myself and brothers used to toss mice "patterns"... (yeah) at bull trout in the early morning after feeding the cattle. Mice patterns work.
-
Anybody else thinking of tying any of these patterns???
-
They look deadly... Remember, they'll count as 2 hooks when fishing because its 2 points, no common shaft. (So a no go for BC Bulls) They also will probably have a tendancy to foul-hook the fish, and will be a problem, especially if you hook up on the first hook. The length of the fly will put the second hook in the fishes eye, gills, etc. For the fish you're better off with just the tail hook (of course when bull trout head strike, you may miss'em.) Some guys cut the tail hook, to have the action of a articulated fly, and get the fish as the take the streamer head first. Stinger hooks are also illegal on quite a few trout waters elsewhere in the world (Rio Manso waters of Patagonia, Single hook barbless areas in Montana, etc) There are lots of cool stinger patterns out there.

http://www.rollcastproductions.com/ Anybody seen this... is it worth watching? ... there are spey rods involved.

The nylon part is ripping out, or the leather itself is torn (or the nylon shock-cord laces)?? I use just normal laces with my boots and it's just fine. If you need a new hole for the laces, make sure to put a grommet in the leather to protect it. Cheers,
-
That last looks the best; more like the natural progression. Good fly for picky fushes.

Hey Rock, Which CG is it?? Right on the Little Red Deer, or one in town? It's a great area to fish.... better chance of new water for alot of the S. fish bums too. But, if everybody is hell-bent on headed south, I like Syncline. My dad's B-day is on the 16th of that month, but I can always convince him to stay at the ranch near Beaver Mines or with friends at BM Lake... Drink with you folks at night, mix up the fishin'... Sounds good. Guito, we have an appointment on a long section of creek from dawn to dusk. We'll walk the whole thing this summer. Cheers,

I'm suprised nobody mentioned the Chota STL's. You can add or remove studds for different areas/times (a couple of studds in the toe add good traction, without going overboard), great ankle support, Mine lasted 5 seasons (+100 days rec and work/season), boat work, walking alot of sharp bed rock, and many many miles. The laces were replaced after a season and the felts after 2. Just bought my second pair last winter... still look great. Only 2 downsides to felts...1. they wear out with alot of dry walking (so does the soft stealth rubber, though) 2. Bad for carrying nasties if you travel... Wash in good hot water, dry completely, and freeze if you can. Prevent the spread of Dydimo to the south, and Mud snails and whirling disease up to Alberta!!! Clean your gear.
