Japanese Fishing With Cormorants
DutchDryfly replied to Weedy1's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
A few years back British scientist found that cormorant either hunt salt water or fresh water. I think you got the freshwater species. Not to bad as long as there are not to many. We now have the problem that the saltwater species is also hunting in the fresh water. The salt water species is used to hunt in groups, so imagine a group of birds swimming 30 cm apart over the whole width of a stream picking up everything that swims. With the rockies between you and the salt it will not be a natural occurence, but watch for the "bucket" brigade or how ever you want to call it. -
Not to hijack the post, but if anyone can get me a piece of fall mule deer hide I will be much obliged. It is the the deerhair where the CDC&Elk is tied with. Long kept secret from Hans himself.

The birds usually have a ring around their neck, which prevents the bird from swollowing. -
Japanese Fishing With Cormorants

I don't think you want cormorants in Alberta. As a result of overfishing the Nort Sea, they are now swarming across Europe to the extend that no trout stream is fishable anymore. Grayling and trout disappear as cormorants tend to hunt in flocks. If you have never seen it you are in for a surprise. As a native bird, cormorants are protected overhere, which does not agree with a lot of fishermen. On the other hand, we pilliged the sea and as a result the cormorants have to find food elsewhere. -
Thanks, Bobr. After some Googling I found that we also have Edge datacards overhere. Edge is an upgrade from GPRS. But most of Europe is on UMTS and now upgrading to HSDPA. Will talk to the IT geeks to get the right card. Still keeping my fingers crossed. Rob

Unfortunately I already booked an RV, so switching to hotels is not an option. May be for a day or two, but certainly no longer.

Smitty, I am from The Netherlands. The boss, IF he agrees with my vacation, will provide a laptop and wireless card. Clive, thanks for the info. No need for the webmail as I have to check my company mail and access our system. I don't think company-policy allows me to create a VPN-connection on public computers. GPRS will may be to slow to work but will help with the reading of my mail. I will check Anglers Ridge and hopefully work something out with my boss. Rob

Well, I spoke with the boss. Being not a very good messenger for bad news, he asked me to cancel my vacation but I refused. Legally he can still cancel my vacation, but in order to change his mind I offered to take a laptop. He will be thinking about this over the weekend and get back to me after the weekend with a decision. For this reason I am inquiring about UMTS coverage in the area between Calgary and say Blairmore. How is the coverage in that area or do I have to find an Internet Cafe? Thanks for answering, may be it wil save my vacation. Rob (I have found 2 internet cafes in Blairmore, but with the timedifference which means I will be awake at 4.00 am, I was wondering if I can get wireless access so I can work the early morning and go fishing afterwards. That way I am not dependend on the opening of any store.)

Ladystrange, as Toolman already mentioned I was just kidding. Yesterday I put my objection officially in writing. Tomorrow afternoon I will have a conversation with my department manager. So hopefully I can convince him to let me go on vacation. As a last resort I am willing to take a laptop with me, so I can do some work in the evenings. I am just not sure if there are that many wifi hotspots in the area. I found some in Calgary and depending on what site you look 2 in Blairmore. According to Local.google.com Lost Lemon campground is also a wifi hotspot. This would be great, as I can just camp there and work the evenings while fishing the rest of the day. This will mean a lot of driving, but hey the company can pay for it.

After receiving the good news yesterday about opening of the FTR, I would have suspected that there was some bad news waiting to happen. Today my boss officially asked for the costs of canceling my vacation. I only hope that the costs will be too high for him to cancel my vacation, but I think I have about a 10% chance of getting to Alberta this fall. WORK SUCKS SOMETIMES!!!!! Rob

When catching such a beautiful painting, you don't think about the size. At least I don't.

Forestry Campground Announcement ??
DutchDryfly replied to dryfly's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Followed the precip myself daily on the net and I can't find any substantial amount that will allow the area to open up again. For selfish reasons I say keep it closed till the 17th and then open it only for European foreign tourists and perhaps an accompanying FFC-member. In return I will not eat any fish or leave any trace I was in the area. -
Congrats on the new catch. Sorry to hear the next four years you are not on the water. Rob

If you take a plastic translucent bead, it will probably just stay in the foam because of the current. As for the legs, you could try some CDC. It will keep the fly from sinking to much and the air trapped in the fibers will give it a translucent shine. I like the idea of the white antron underbody, this too will make it float better then the Hare's ear.

Great to have you back in such a short time. Does the part left does not create any problems or do you have to undergo more surgery later? Can't wait for the next BJOTW. Rob

I placed this already on the FFA-board, but since the board is no longer accessible and knowing Greg really likes this video from 2006: http://www.psychology.unimaas.nl/images/Ju..._compi_2006.wmv And for Dryfly there are also some cows in this video just as in the pictures from this year. Rob

You certainly will see me there, Gordon, I am coming from even further away.

Elk River Or Lower Kananaskis..a Dilemma

For licenses and other info check http://www.bcfishing.com/regulations/ For the lakes you have to wait for someone else to answer that one. -
If that is your first fly, I have to say it is the best first fly I have ever seen. I don't think catching fish with it will be a problem. Rob

Well, five weeks to go in anticipation. My employer thought it was a good idea to add a little suspense in the mix and informed me that they are thinking of cancelling my vacation. So besides the question if the rivers are open when arriving, I now have another thing to worry about. So I keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. I was planning to meet some of you guys and hope that this will still happen. For those who want it I can PM my cell phone number, probably the week before I leave. Rob

Gordon, I think you or Greg have to reschedule. Planned on the 22nd is a FFC-gathering for cleaning up the Bow and some fishing afterwards. Although I did not hear much about it anymore. Rob

Welkom, Ben. Je hebt het forum dus ook gevonden. Rob

Cataract does not fall in to the closed area, as Taco showed on another board. http://alberta.ca/acn/200708/21873.pdf

Dream Destination?

It is nice, but pricey. Remember that the license fee is the DAILY fee for any good river.
