admin Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I've got some that is just a bit too thick. Anyone know what to use to thin it out a bit? Quote
Flytyer Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 If I remember right you can use Dave's fleximent thinner. Quote
Taco Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Sally Hansens sells a nail polish thinner but I just use the Bitter Half's nail polish remover (acetone), go slow Quote
admin Posted August 19, 2009 Author Posted August 19, 2009 I've got some pure acetone I use for my head cement. Thanks. Quote
jack Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Nail polish remover, these days, has a bunch of undesirable additives(for thinner), go with straight acetone, a drop at a time. j Quote
Guest tallieho Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 other than a fly tackle shop ,is it available anywhere else ..sally's or hard as nails thanks Quote
admin Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 I get the hard as nails at the drug store around the nail polish and the Acetone at the hardware store. I've tried using some commercial nail polish remver once on a small amount of cement and it didn't go so well. The straight stuff is the only way to go as Jack says. Quote
Nick0Danger Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I find its cheap enough i just go buy a new bottle. Quote
SilverDoctor Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I find its cheap enough i just go buy a new bottle. Safer for your health also, to just buy another bottle, acetone is not a friendly chemical. I've kept away form it and my kids don't have wings or webbed toes. Quote
admin Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 I find its cheap enough i just go buy a new bottle. It's too thin new for what I use it for, so I would need to let it sit for a couple days. I'm fine with the acetone, just taking care not to spill it on myself. Quote
Nick0Danger Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I just have a few bottles on the go, the new stuff for small dries, and then thicker stuff, for streamers and what not. Quote
Guest Sundancefisher Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I just have a few bottles on the go, the new stuff for small dries, and then thicker stuff, for streamers and what not. I bought 3 bottles of Hard as Nails and left them on my tying bench. Went down a few days later and the kids had been tying and left all the bottles open... Not enough acetone in the world to thin it up... Still I like to shop for nail polish as few times a year as possible. Now if I only tied roe bags I could by some panty hose... Quote
ÜberFly Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Sun, you and Rick should get together and look at flower photos together, as well!! wongrs Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 as someone said, i bought a new bottle but i diluted my thick bottle with some new thinner stuff from the newer bottle. when it's fresh, it's not thick enough for me as i need an excessive number of coats to make flies such as buzzers. Quote
nebc Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 I bought my Hard As Nails at Walmart for cheap. Went to the Home Hardware and bought the smallest container of straight acetone i could find. As someone mentioned, go slow with thinning. Experimenting with one drop at a time worked for me. Quote
Wolfie Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Guess I'm the odd ball..I've been using it as a 'base', before I apply my glue to make their heads that hold the eyes on my streamers. So ..I need it rather thick.....see the opposite again.............Wolfie Quote
