i just use a toothpik but i dont find that it works that well. is there a cheap but effective way of doing it.

 

Yes. Get some Dave's Fleximent and dip your tooth picks into it. I dry them on my fly tying light spring but you can come up with your own method. Clip off to length needed. It stops the thinest line from slipping and slows down the eventual waterlog/mushy state it will eventually achieve. Works great!

 

I'm still not a thingamaboobie convert, but I'm trying.
