Someone posted pics last April, wondering what could have caused the head wound; I caught the same fish a few days later, removed a SJW from it's tail & released her again. They don't have a lot of status down south, because they tend to be a meat eater and are hard to catch on atrificial bait. However, I've always liked catching them. They fight fantastic, lb for lb better than a red. We call the big one's BUs or Big Uglies. They get really, really ugly as they get big. The Black drum was taken on a 7wt in about 12" of water with this fly; We caught 4 with the fly above, and 3 more with this Fly; The first Red was taken on this Fly; The Big Red was taken on This Fly; We were in New Orleans for Christmas and New Years, and went out with Captain Travis Holman of Holeman Brothers Guiding. He is one of the top Fishermen on the FLW Redfish Tour. We had a GREAT time, But next time, I will be going down when the fishing is a bit hotter, (I was told June is GREAT!!!) Yup, 1st and 3rd Salmon pics are Chum or Dog Salmon, and the 2nd or Red one is a Really mature Coho. This Coho was one of the biggest I have ever seen caught around here (Vancouver). We did a Riverside weigh in with it, and it was just a touch over 18lbs. The day that ALL these Salmon Pic's were shot, we (My Buddy and I) landed 35 Chum and 9 Coho, ALL on the Fly. You are taking much less chance with the weather, particularly the wind. You can get long stretches of pretty big wind in April/May. But if you hit it right, it can be just amazing fishing. Fishing in June and July can be off the charts as well, but get ready to sweat. Lots. Clouser is just a classic. I like the shrimpy looking fly in the second pic. I would think the third is maybe some sort of mullet imitation? And the spoon fly! Some fly fishermen in the states won't use it. Stupid fly fishermen. My first, and to this date only redfish on a fly rod was caught on a spoon fly. The drum would have been a blast on the fly rod. But that big red! Fantastic bud. I caught a 24"er on a 5 wt and it was a war. A 24" red goes like 4-5 lbs. A 26# red? Wow!! Did you get a length? I'm guessing a bit over 40? I've caught lots that big, like hooking on to a truck. The Big Red was a BLAST!!!! it took me deep into my backing 3 times and took close to 40 min to get to the boat. Man those fish are strong. I would compare them to a cross with a Spring Salmon (Because of the power) and a Steelhead (Because of the speed) As for the spoon fly, I got it from the Flyshop in NO called Uptown Angler. In all honesty, I did not want to use it myself, I call the a Flure, half fly, half lure, but I am SOOOOOOO glad I did end up using it.
