Simpson Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 I have the Olympus and its deadly....I believe I saw the picture burst feature mentioned earlier on....this is an wicked feature and the only one I use now for fish porn. Sometimes you just don't click it at the right time. With that feature you end up with 10 pics to choose from. Any of those models would be a good investment Quote
Bandi Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I already gave my vote to Pentax. In the meanwhile, i read quite many good reviews about the Olympus 1030, so I am positive you will be OK whichever you choose. I was wondering if you noticed that Olympus released the 1050 ( http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/stylus1050.html ), which was around $290 in Canada. http://www.shopbot.ca/pp-olympus-mju-1050-...ice-126115.html Let us know what you decide and what is your opinion after testing it for some time. agbff Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 That 1050 sw is pretty dope. Still has the 3x Optical zoom where as the pentax is 5x . I dont know a whole bunch about camera's, but do you think that is a huge difference? Quote

I dont know a whole bunch about camera's, but do you think that is a huge difference? I would say if you want to use this camera mostly for taking photos of fish go for wide-angle, so you can fit those big ones in the picture. Seriously, you need 5x zoom if you want to take telephotos of animals that would not wait for you to get closer. Though, the difference between 3x and 5x zoom is big... so if you need the zoom opt for the 5x. Lots of people mentioned burst mode and they are right! I love it on my Canon to take photos of fast moving animals or objects. Fish can be jumpy so you should use this feature. Quote
booboo Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 So does the 1030 have burst? I have one but not sure where the burst feature is. More manual reading for me. Quote
jksnijders Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Where do you (Calgarians) buy your camera? Does anyone buy it from internet or prefer local shops (touch-and-feel)? Have you ever got a camera for couple of days from a shop to try it out? What I am interested is whether it is getting a common practice to take your camera (for some money) to test it before buying it. Naturally, I see both pros and cons for the seller (and buyer). Flyon, sorry for hijacking... hopefully, you will see some shops to buy or even which one let you take it for a spin. I've dealt with Vistek a few times lately, they've been really good. I do believe they will rent gear, on a per day basis or something, to try it out. The guy I dealt with last time mentioned it. As to the exact conditions I'm not sure though.. Quote
timjorourke Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I have had a good experience dealing with Vistek also. That is where I got my 1030 and a Nikon. Bandi Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I have had a good experience dealing with Vistek also. That is where I got my 1030 and a Nikon. I had a bad experience when I went down to their shop (also inexperienced with Calgary public transportation ) and found out that most of their lenses are not on stock and the one I want they can get only 1,5-2 months. (In Vancouver, I walked in a shop, tested and bought it in 30 mins.) As I wrote, it was partly due to my assumption of having all those lenses what they list on their site (Yes, I checked the site out before going. ). So, I do not blame the shop! ... the web site was not clear and I had wrong assumption. Olympus 1030 has a "continuous shooting mode", but it is not too quick in 10MP. Still, it could be OK to shoot a fish after wearing it down. High speed: 5.2 frames per second, 11 frames (3MP) Normal speed: 0.7 frames per second, 7 frames (10MP) Quote
bigalcal Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I have a Pentax Optio WPi. It has worked well for me. I don't have many underwater fish pix 'cause it is difficult to do when you are fishing solo most of the time. I believe that I may have scratched the lens cover so I am looking for an upgrade. I stopped by "The Camera Store" today. I do agree that it is the best shop in town. Very helpful, knowledgeable staff. Anyways, I looked at both the Pentax Optio W60 as well as the Olympus Stylus 1030. Obviously the Pentax is much better than the model that I have. Side by side, the Olympus has a lot more durable body , (Steel vs plastic). Picture quality is the same, Olympus has a lens cover, Pentax doesn't. Olympus has a nice macro feature which includes an LED light but Pentax has a bigger zoom. Decisions ...decisions! Bugs or Mountain goats! I dunno...............................to be continued. Quote
agbff Posted December 3, 2008 Author Posted December 3, 2008 I feel your pain botangles.... still cant decide where to throw my money. Quote

I see so good photos that I might buy one soon. I love my Canon 20D, but it is a bit bulky for wading and taking one hand shots. Yes, I have a Canon point-and-shoot camera, too, but that is not waterpoof. Keep posting these good photos (underwater or not). Quote
jksnijders Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Where's that at, Flyon? Thinkin its time to see if I can't wreck myself... Quote

Gary Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Alright, Im gunna buy myself a waterproof camera as my last one took a livingstone swim and drowned. I am thinking its between the Olympus Stylus 1030 sw and the Pentax W60. What do you guys think? Also, any other recommendations? andy If yours is the camera I saw at the bottom of a big hole...you will need more than just waterproof. A floater might be a good idea Like I should talk after mine went for a swim in Barnaby Quote
