Din Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 didn't have any barbell eyes, so i just ended up making some out of 20lb mono...but I think it turned out okay, not as good as SJW tho thats for sure... Quote
Harps Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Looks good, very buggy. Without the weight it'll drift naturally, just throw some weight on the leader. I'd only taper the fly a bit more (bigger thorax) to match some of Toolman's images of Stoneflies (do a search, there are great pictures here). It'll catch fish, eitherway! Cheers, Quote
ladystrange Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 material list... i would like to do up a couple myself Quote
Din Posted January 10, 2008 Author Posted January 10, 2008 material list... i would like to do up a couple myself thanks everyone. kudos to SJW for the pattern. http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?showtopic=2506 (Just used black nymph skin vs. the color he used in the tutorial...) Quote
Din Posted January 10, 2008 Author Posted January 10, 2008 here's my golden version...need to pick up a brown marker to color it yet... Quote
SanJuanWorm Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 The reason i feel this pattern works so well is because of the nymph skin. Its soft like a real bug so the fish doesn't necessarily ditch it immediately, allowing you to not "ralphie" the hookset. This is just my theory. Quote
toolman Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 An interesting theory that I have heard before, but, Stoneflys have exoskeltons that are fairly hard. So, I think the reason your fly works is because it has key visual features that trout want such as size, proportions, color, texture, profile etc. and a natural swim when it is fished. I had an opportunity to fish these Stones (thnks SJW) a few seasons ago and they do work well. Quote
SanJuanWorm Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 TM you are missing my point i believe. Quote
toolman Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 You may be right, Stoneflies do soften up prior to emergence....That might be an appealing feature as well, but they do strike first on visual cues. Quote
Din Posted January 25, 2008 Author Posted January 25, 2008 After several versions finally got one that i'm happy with and would fish with rather than just fit in my box.... Quote
Guest bigbadbrent Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Best dubbing color there is...nice fly mitch Quote
