sirocco Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Hey Guys, Just wondering what type of thread is ideal for the type of dubbing loop used in this tutorial: http://globalflyfisher.com/patterns/hivis/ I'm thinking 3/0 monocord. Am I way off? Quote
Guest bigbadbrent Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Get your hands on UTC 70, greatest thread for splitting (i've found, anyway) Quote
ladystrange Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 i really like danville's 70denier. split thread is not my favourite method of dubbing, but worked really will on a fly i just did using a split thread to hackle peacock swords in a dubbing loop. worked very well. Quote
DonAndersen Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 sirocco, The thread you chose must be of the flat filament type. I use Danville's 6/0. You should stroke the thread against your finger and thumb nail to get the twists out while leaving your bobbin spin. This is done prior to splitting the thread. Note: most threads are left hand twist meaning right hand tiers put more and more twists into the thread each turn you take. Leaving your bobbin spin will remove most of them. [ Go lefties] You also need a very sharp needle to separate the threads into even bundles. The methods works well for small denier hydrocarbon dubbing materials like Fly Rite etc. Heavier denier materials [like seal fur] are much tougher to capture. catch ya' Don Quote
albannachxcuileag Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 This article on threads will explain the beat and worst of them. It boils down to a personal choice for thread and at the moment UTC wins by a country mile for splitting easily. I have tried Danville's, Benecchi, UNI, Spiderweb and many others but UTC wins out as it is so easy to split. Don't waste money on the likes of the Pettijean thread as it is actually UNI from all accounts. Link to Thread Quote
admin Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 The UTC works pretty good. Marc Petitjean also has a brand called Split Second thread made specifically for splitting. 6/0 should be thick enough to split. Quote
sirocco Posted December 11, 2007 Author Posted December 11, 2007 Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll go track down some UTC. Does anyone know who sells it in Calgary? Quote
Guest bigbadbrent Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I know Flys Etc in high river does, but that doesn't help you at all Quote
Din Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll go track down some UTC. Does anyone know who sells it in Calgary? Wholesale does.. Quote
admin Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 I was tying today with some Gudebrod and it splits like buddar. They have stopped producing threads for fly tying, but you can still find some around. Quote
