I recently moved, and had to get rid of my old desk that I had my tying stuff set up at because it was too big for the new place. I have been trying to replace it for a couple weeks now, but I am struggling to find something that I think will work. I only have about a 4' wide space to work with, so I am a little bit limited.

I've looked at a few "post your tying bench" threads, but am curious as to what features are really useful, and things I should look for. Kijiji can be tough without seeing things in person sometimes

I would love to be able to design and build my own bench, I just don't have the room or all of the tools I need at home to make one. Do you have any pictures/ plans of ones you have made?

One suggestion I can pass on, is to set things up so that you have as large a working surface as possible. When I get serious about tying, my entire desk gets covered with stuff, especially when I'm doing pike flies. My tying table is a computer desk that I built years ago and have since converted. Initially I had all the plastic storage boxes sitting on the desk top, which cut the working area almost in half. So I built the shelf that the storage boxes sit on now. I still don't have enough work area or storage space -- nobody ever does -- but I get by. Terry

I had loads of space on the old one, just won't get that this time. I have been thinking a portable station with a separate storage area may be a good way to go now

Check out hobby storage systems, particularly scrap booking. Some really innovative storage ideas out there. When I was looking into it some of the most impressive options were non-fly tying.

Here is what I finally ended up going with, just had to wait for the right desk to show up on Kijiji. E558121D-89CA-4AFD-8855-EE6C465CF2BB_zps

Does anyone have an extra pedestal base for a vise, or know where I can pick one up? The c-clamp doesn't quite work with the desk the way I planned.

About 5 years ago, I picked up a base plate for my vise at Bass Pro in the States. It might be worth the drive out to Crossiron Mills.

I just picked up a desk myself off of kijiji. It can be great at times but your right you do have to wait for the right desk to come a long, I think I looked for 2 almost 3 weeks.
