Have a dead GHO in my parents yard (NW Calgary). Not sure how it died (haven't seen it yet). Is there any specific organization I should call to investigate or for disposal?! If no, am I able to retain some feathers. Is this disrespectful to the animal or to the First Nations?!

Please advise if you have info/exp.

Thanks,

Peter,

Mike is right. Get a permit from Sustainable resource development. They generally want the bird and will check it for bullet holes. They may decide to keep it or give it to you.

Great Horned Owls are nearly the smelliest thing that exists. Pack it well in several plastic bags and freeze it.

The feathers on the birds is very webby. Never found a use for them.

They do make a great mount though.

Regards,

If you get a permit from Fish and Wildlife, absolutely get it mounted like Don said. They are spectacular when well done. Unfortunately, the one I hit with my vehicle wound up staying with my ex.
