I have only owned 2 bobbins, but I certainly break less thread with the ceramic one. Good warning about dropping the ceramics I tend to be rough on things and I will try to keep that in mind.

should i varnish it as i go along. i definately dont want sticky-upies for this project.

it is a one off. as soon as i figure it out in my head. you'll see it with my swap stuff

If you varnish or head cement floss it will change the color and texture. The less you handle floss the better. I always have floss on a bobbin. Less frays that way. Don't let it run through your fingers. For a nice smooth floss finish, after you finish winding the floss on burnish it with a perfectly smooth tool smooth like the side of your bobbin. Or a plastic pen barrel. It aligns the fibers and flattens them for a nice sheen. Give it a try.

I have regular style ruby insert and a titanium insert bobbins that have been good so far but I only have been using them for floss for the most part. Has anyone else tried these types? ?The ones I have are the Dr Slick ones.

I was wondering about these as well, delicate on the floss??

These are the ones I have been using for floss.....I prefer the titanium over the ruby but both are suitable.

May I respectfully suggest that you all take a look at the C+F bobbin holders. I bought my first for twenty quid......erm about 40 dollars (I think) about 12 months ago and now I have 6 of the little mongrels. They come with a sponge liner behind the thread barrel the upshot of this is if you let go of the holder then your thread doesn't unwind on the bobbin and make pretty spiral patterns as your fly comes unglued (metaphorically speaking). Not everybody in the Uk is all that taken with them but I absolutely love them to death.

I have one and they're a good little bobbin. Like you said they don't unthread at all. I use it in my travel kit. it does come with and especially nice bobbin threader that you can store in the bobbin when not in use.
